I received a SD notification about Roku Ultra clearance at Target. BS showed one close to my house at $45. I talked the girl who’s watching the pups and house to go check for me. Surely enough, last one, but she picked it up for me. $45. Original price $90, MSRP $100.
4K, HDR, AC wifi, headphone jack on remote, includes “premium” JBL headphones, the works.
@ruouttaurmind Your local store seems to be the only one showing it as $45. Brickseek is showing $63 (and limited quantity) up about 60 miles (where I’m currently at for work).
@mfladd If you do much streaming… read on. If streaming is a very occasional thing for you, stop here and save $45 plus tax. Get yourself a refurb Fire TV Stick for $20. Fire TV Stick is not great, but it will work reasonably for most casual streamers.
If most of your streaming is from the Apple iTunes Store, stop here and save $45 plus tax. Apple isn’t friendly towards any non-Apple streaming devices. Not to say there aren’t workarounds, but if you’re not a techie, it’s cumbersome and hit-or-miss, heavily dependent on the studio of origin of the content. Also, potentially not lawful.
If you have a dumb TV and want to stream, yes, you need this.
If you have a 4K TV, but a 1080p streaming device, yes, you need this.
If you have an Amazon streaming device… Roku doesn’t have a dog in the fight between Amazon and Google, so this may serve you better.
If you have a Google streaming device you may find the Roku more convenient since it has native apps and you won’t have to “cast” from another device to stream. Roku claims “1800+ available channels to choose from” so with the exception of Apple, chances are your faves are covered.
If you have intermittent wifi signal to your current streaming device, this device is for you. It’s equipped with Roku’s top of the line wifi radio and has AC support (for 5GHz network connections).
If you travel much and wish you could take your streaming device with you, this device supports access to “captive portal” networks (common in hotels). This device is for you.
If the idea of “personal listening” is something you can make use of (using headphones to listen in leu of speakers), this device supports that via a headphone jack on the remote.
If voice searches and voice controls are interesting to you (rather than the archaic process of using a remote control to select on-screen characters to type search criteria), this device is for you.
Additional benefits: many more native streaming apps than most smart TVs and streaming devices support. Much more frequent app updates. Super fast processor compared to most smart TVs and even most older streaming devices (my gen 2 Fire TV Stick is VERY slow and almost painful to use). The remote has power and volume buttons which can control your TV, soundbar, etc. Amazon AND Google Play AND YouTube support native within the same device. Native Plex and PlayOn support. DIAL support for casting from certain apps. Screen Mirroring from Android devices.
Roku is releasing 2 new 4K devices in a few days. The $40 Roku Premier and the $50 Premiere Plus. This device, for $45, is a far better value than either of those new options. Roku very recently released a newer version of this Ultra product, but I haven’t found any meaningful difference between the two.

I have a smart tv, but older. I have the fire stick, but the first version. I have chromecast, but I use that on;y when I want to cast something that I can’t get from one of the others.

If anyone has SiliconDust tuners, Roku is not for you. Not sure what the beef is on why, SD says its Roku and their APIs, Roku probably doesn’t care enough to add what SD needs.
You might have to go Plex DVR and the Plex app on the Roku to watch live/DVR TV from SD tuners.
If you’re a stream-only home, then this looks pretty sweet.
If you’re a cord cutter and want OTA, a Tivo Roamio OTA with lifetime is a better deal, with similar WAF to the Roku. Tivo has a new Bolt OTA (has 4k support over Roamio), but its pricey just for the 4K feature.
I use SD to DVR (ad-removed) binge shows watched via Plex, and the Roamio to timeshift stuff we’ll watch later that week or to delay so we can skip commercials as we watch.
@mike808 Good info on the SD & Roku compatibility. I have a full Plex server running on my Synology NAS and a SD tuner mixed in but I honestly rarely use live TV anymore. Fire TV Box 2 & a fire TV stick 2 with Plex app and MrMC as backup (Better transcoding engine for outta the house. Fire 10" tablets to watch elsewhere in the house like kitchen/office.
@reg036 The SD DVR forums have more on the technicals, but basically SD says the ball is in Roku’s court to watch liveTV on SD’s HDView app. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there were DRM licensing conflicts at the bottom of it.
What’s McMC? I use the paid MCE Buddy (win10 x64) which has current (paid) comskip, handbrake, ffmpeg, etc transcoders and HW GPU support. I honestly don’t notice the ad removal and transcoding anymore with an i5 (from an Athlon X4).

@mfladd The standard Bolt and older Roamio are made for cablecards and have no OTA ability. They replace renting a DVR from Comcast or Charter/Spectrum, and you still pay for cable.
The Bolt OTA has no cablecard ability. The OTA models are either “all-in” or monthly fee for guide and software updates. IMO, the all-in option is worth it. ROI is 2 years, I think. Savings from cord cutting, ROI is 3 months. I don’t think the Bolt OTA feature of 4K is worth the premium, so recommend the Roamio OTA. You’ll also want direct gbit or moca internet if you’re streaming, even more so with 4K content from Amazon or Netflix.
For “casting” Tivo, I transfer recordings to a PC with KMTTG and playback via Plex apps on phone or smart TVs. There are Tivo Minis that are extenders, but need wired connection to the main Tivo unit. There are also Tivo Stream units that let you playback recordings via a Tivo app.
Roku doesn’t seem interested in DVR and on consuming streaming content instead. Plex just dropped support for plugins, so doesn’t seem interested in being your streaming UI. SD just added a package of cable channels that stream to its tuners, a la Sling. Tivo might follow with its own app/access to similar bundles as cable channels offer decoupled streaming bundles, or push to Amazon for that (like HBO is now).
@mike808 In 2014 Amazon licensed a portion of the HBO library in an exclusive licensing agreement. Not all shows are available, and not all seasons of many of the shows that are represented. HBO GO and HBO NOW offer the full library. Also, HBO declined to renew their agreement with Amazon and Amazon looses the right to that content at the end of the year. I suspect HBO hopes to grow it’s HBO NOW subscription service, and this is a strategic move in that direction.
@ruouttaurmind I think the standalone channels will move to unbundled streaming, if not already. e.g. individual channel streaming, like CBS, HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, etc. And bundles, like now with Sling, Disney, SiliconDust Premium, Hulu, etc.
Things are in flux, so there might be good deals for consumers until it consolidates again. 5G might even kill OTA.
@mike808 MrMC is a Kodi fork, plugins disabled, it’s available in the Google/Apple/Amazon ecosystem. Best for local media playback. It is developed and maintained by the developer who did all the original porting of Kodi (XBMC) to Android and now the guy who has been the Android maintainer of Kodi. Basically the 2 guys who know more about Android Audio/Video playback then most others combined. The Nvidia Shield box, Apple TV, and Amzon Fire are the main focus of the project. It’s a paid app but the Android code has the best transcoding engine out there and it’s updated frequently. mrmc.tv
@mike808 And I did not specify my need when mentioning tivo, but it was for a DVR system. OTA is very sketchy here, with only one station available, so it that doesn’t mean that much to me. I am looking into other options for locals.
@mfladd@mike808 I also stream on a 12mb connection (avg 10.5 down, 1.7 upstream). I also think it does fine, mostly.
When I had a roommate, and he would sit in his room streaming pretty much nonstop, there wasn’t much else I could do. Online gaming was pitiful, remote access to my video doorbell was intermittent, grabbing a fuk was nearly impossible, etc.
Even now, being the only one in my house, 4K streams take 4 or 5 minutes to ramp up, and often won’t ever make it to full 4K. FHD streams usually start at 480 and usually ramp to FHD after a minute or two. Netflix is better than Prime Video. HBO-GO is better still, usually reaching FHD in half a minute or less. AMC is up there with Amazon in the “no hurry to reach FHD” category.
These are my own experiences, obvs YMMV. MANY variables here. From ISP to local network hardware, local network overhead, configuration options, etc.
@Raider I just got home from my travels on Friday and was able to set mine up. So far I’m loving it! I originally intended to use it in the bedroom on a dumb TV, but it’s so much better than the integrated features of my Vizio smart TV in the living room, I think I’m going to leave it in there. Now I wish I had a second one for my bedroom.
My only complaint with it: it screws with the CEC function. I used to be able to turn on the satellite receiver and the TV would automatically power up and switch to the correct HDMI input. But with the Roku in the mix, CEC doesn’t work anymore. I’m guessing maybe it’s because the Roku is always on. But other than that, no complaints so far.
@ruouttaurmind This was to upgrade from a well used Roku 2, which at 7 or so years old began to run really slow on channels updated in the last year or so (meaning most of them). Load times are insanely quick on this thing and the image quality is even much improved (on a 1080p set).
I haven’t checked out the CEC features on the new model, however other Roku models never effected that on sets that I have seen them connected. All models have used the “always on” model. With that being said I have not used a Roku on a Vizio so maybe their interface works differently. No idea, wish I could shed some light onto that for you.

No, I wasn’t able to cast from my iOS devices to my Fire TV Stick.
There is no specific app required on either platform (iOS or Android). Casting is accomplished by each individual streaming app (Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu, etc.)
This information is from my own experience with my devices and apps. Please do your own due diligence before committing any significant resources.
@mike808 As soon as you have enabled google chromecast from ipad, tablet, phone, chromebook etc. You will start to see an icon for casting which you can hit to cast. I only use mine for casting things that are not readily available as an app on roku, STV, or FS. No, you cannot cast to a firestick.

@jasneko@sammydog01 Out of the bag, very soft. I got the mink (instead of the sherpa) version, since it really doesn’t get cold here in SoCal. It’s dye-sublimated, so there’s no texture to the print at all, as the ink is vaporized into the polyester fibers themselves.

If you try to read about buying contacts online, there’s a lot of people that will tell you not to because you’ll ruin your eyes. People hurt their eyes because they don’t learn how to properly care for their contacts or they will wear them to bed, sometimes for days on end. I was very happy with my purchase.
@JnKL I forgot to mention. The white/black ones do kind of have a white haze. I’ve been told my pupils are a little bigger than normal, so I’m not sure if everyone gets that affect. I can see fine, it’s just a little foggy on the outer edges.

In response to a comment I received, and for those who also are unaware…
The lower receiver and pistol posted in this thread are federally controlled items. Despite what you may believe after watching sensationalistic reports on the evening news: Although these items can be purchased “anonymously” via the interwebs, the seller is strictly prohibited from shipping them to any other than a federally licensed dealer. The dealer must then submit the transaction for approval (the specific process varies by state but involves a NCIS background check), then have the buyer complete a federal transaction form (4473 IIRC) before the licensed dealer can release the items to a buyer. The local licensed dealer is also strictly bound by laws and regulations in their local jurisdiction. Unlike those reports on NBC, it is a very restricted process.

This may be a marketing rumor to get us to buy more strips, like the ‘shampoo, rinse, repeat’ mantra. Only one dose of shampoo was necessary, but they sold (and we used) twice the amount needed.
Power strips with surge suppressors have circuitry (MOVs) that does indeed degrade over time, due to the cumulative effects of the surges it supresses.
MOV life is largely dictated by thermal stress
Exposure to surges cause heat-ups and cool-downs of the device, as well as (depending on the nature of the surge) incremental damages such as electrical puncture and thermal cracking
These incremental damages lead to non-uniform heating when additional stresses are applied, which leads to thermal runaway and device failure
A surge protector that is connected to the mains should be considered ‘on the clock’ - once you get past the manufacturer’s recommended replacement time period, you’re on your own. Unless you have access to a surge generator you won’t really be able to test if the MOV is still ‘good’, and since you could be in a ‘one-and-done’ situation (the next surge gets clamped but takes the MOV out), it’s not really worth testing it.
You could (theoretically) replace a questionable MOV with a comparably-rated one if you just want protection and don’t care about dealing with manufacturer’s warranties. They’re available from a variety of suppliers - energy-handling and voltage clamping level are the key spec items to look out for.
The safest thing to assume is that if the surge protector is older than the manufacturer’s equipment guarantee, assume the MOV isn’t in there at all (i.e. there’s no protection).

@mike808@OldCatLady@RiotDemon@therealjrn Whole house surge protectors are pretty cheap and go right into the panel, highly suggest if you own your own or talk your landlord into it (lol). That said I still have UPS’ (uninterrupted power supplies) with voltage regulation behind all my expensive electronics. But it does all depends where you live on what you need. Not many surges in my area, knock on wood!

@reg036@sammydog01 I’ve just begun using my first Alexa product (the Dot from Woot). I had a Fire TV Stick (hated it) and a Kindle (didn’t love it). I still have a brand new Fire 7 tablet in the safe that will likely never be opened.
I’m a very regular Amz shopper, but I haven’t had overwhelming love for the devices. Also, my Prime subscription expires in January and I won’t pay their latest price increase, so Amz Prime Vid will be going away. I can never get Prime Vid to stream reliability at 4K anyway, so…

@ruouttaurmind@sammydog01 I use my 7" for ebooks mostly, 10" for portable video watching, sits next to the computer on the desk and is playing through my echo for better sound. I have a Dot in every room as I have voice controlled lights everywhere now. I’m still on a 1080P TV so no 4k for me yet (Hell my TV is over a decade old but 57"). The Dots are great for timers, weather, news while cooking/dishes/laundry. I use mine for ambient noise while going to bed/napping and alarm clock. You should go into the Alexa app and look at the skills there are some great games and trivia ones, Jeopardy is awesome! And whole house music is pretty good. I should also add my Dots/Echos voice control my Fire TVs so I’m in full lazy mode on the couch. You 4k issue might have to do with your wireless router or stick positioned to close to TV (some TVs are quite noisy with RF interference).
@reg036 I have a number of Alexa Skills enabled currently, including one that controls my Dish satellite receiver and my Vizio TV (as well as several TP-Link and Belkin wifi outlets). I’m pretty disappointed in the functionality and reliablity of many of the Skills I’ve experimented with, but I understand that’s not really Amazon’s fault since they do not actually write the Skills. Also the lack of documentation for most of the Skills is very frustrating. It would be awesome if each Skill had a full list of the specific commands and syntax listed, but most do not. They simply suggest “Try…” and list a handful of functions.
RE: 4K, the issue seems to be Amazon’s, not my network or hardware. Netflix 4K streaming is very reliable, as is also the case with the few other streaming providers I’ve sampled. It’s only Amazon that struggles to deliver 4K. It usually takes several minutes for the stream to ramp up to 4K (several times it just never made it to 4K), and then it will hop between 4K and 1080p frequently. Wow, all the tablets I’m finding with bigger than 32g hds are windows. What’s the deal? My phone’s 128g, why aren’t there tablets? I can’t put all the games I want on my 32g tablet, even with moving most to the sd card, some won’t go and the big ones have trouble updating.
@moondrake I find most Android tabs are in the 16-64GB range. I usually save a few bucks and go with the lower storage, then use the biggest SD card I can with the device. For example, my Galaxy Tab S3 is 32GB but has a 128GB sdcard. More than enough storage IMO.

Then I got to reading the tech specs and realized it’s nothing more than a bluetooth microphone which accesses the Alexa app on your phone, and uses your phone or car stereo speakers. Seems like a better option to get a Echo Dot and use it in the car. You would still have the option to plug it into your car stereo if you wanted better sound.

@ruouttaurmind It was my understanding you could connect your car stereo to the Echo Auto device via Bluetooth or Aux. (not through the phone) I was thinking the Echo would use your phone’s data to stream the content and not just use the app on your phone. I assumed it would also use your phone’s GPS for location-based stuff, but if it’s just relaying the phone app’s response to the Echo as a bluetooth speaker, I don’t want one. There are already devices that do that.

@ruouttaurmind the 2nd piece isn’t bad, it’s just saying that’s how it sends sound to the radio. Connects TO the car and not the phone.
The first bit is obvious it’s using your cell data plan. (duh) It could just mean it uses the app as a means to sync and communicate things from your phone like GPS or other features. I don’t see it working like the song will be streaming in your phone’s app and simply relaying the audio to the device. If that IS how it works, then meh.
Maybe even $20. If they’re just hitting the market, maybe they want to create a buzz. A few years ago when the Fire TV stick was first released, that Black Friday they were $20, down from… hmm… seems like it was MSRP at about $60??
to add Bluetooth music and calling to a car which only has aux in (way back in the center console under your elbow no less). It’s a Bluetooth receiver, microphone and three buttons on a puck that I have yet to permanently mount. A Dot in the car was one of the avenues I looked at to try to solve this problem but decided it had some problems.
It looks like both of these might really do pretty much the same thing. I’ve not tried to use the alexa app with mine. But I do think Amazon puts a lot into their microphone arrays, so I signed up for a pre-order invite so if I get invited I can compare them.
Mine has a couple more features, but the mic is pretty bad. FM modulation is helpful in the truck which has no AUX input, and the audio quality is decent. But that mic though. I signed up for the Echo Auto because most of my use is with Audible app, so hopefully Echo Auto can stream from offline content on the phone rather than online streaming for all Audible content.
Since I’ve got Alexa all over my house, I would probably get this if I didn’t already have Android Auto. Using Echo Auto would preclude having Waze on my car’s display.

My phone already auto connects to the AUX Bluetooth dongle in my car and plays music from my music files, no data cost. I can use it for phone calls, texts and maps. I can do all this hands free with Google Assistant. What does this device add to that arrangement?

@mfladd If you do much streaming… read on. If streaming is a very occasional thing for you, stop here and save $45 plus tax. Get yourself a refurb Fire TV Stick for $20. Fire TV Stick is not great, but it will work reasonably for most casual streamers.
If most of your streaming is from the Apple iTunes Store, stop here and save $45 plus tax. Apple isn’t friendly towards any non-Apple streaming devices. Not to say there aren’t workarounds, but if you’re not a techie, it’s cumbersome and hit-or-miss, heavily dependent on the studio of origin of the content. Also, potentially not lawful.
If you have a dumb TV and want to stream, yes, you need this.
If you have a 4K TV, but a 1080p streaming device, yes, you need this.
If you have an Amazon streaming device… Roku doesn’t have a dog in the fight between Amazon and Google, so this may serve you better.

If anyone has SiliconDust tuners, Roku is not for you. Not sure what the beef is on why, SD says its Roku and their APIs, Roku probably doesn’t care enough to add what SD needs.
You might have to go Plex DVR and the Plex app on the Roku to watch live/DVR TV from SD tuners.
If you’re a stream-only home, then this looks pretty sweet.
If you’re a cord cutter and want OTA, a Tivo Roamio OTA with lifetime is a better deal, with similar WAF to the Roku. Tivo has a new Bolt OTA (has 4k support over Roamio), but its pricey just for the 4K feature.
I use SD to DVR (ad-removed) binge shows watched via Plex, and the Roamio to timeshift stuff we’ll watch later that week or to delay so we can skip commercials as we watch.
I use my firestick as my travel streamer.
@mike808 Good info on the SD & Roku compatibility. I have a full Plex server running on my Synology NAS and a SD tuner mixed in but I honestly rarely use live TV anymore. Fire TV Box 2 & a fire TV stick 2 with Plex app and MrMC as backup (Better transcoding engine for outta the house. Fire 10" tablets to watch elsewhere in the house like kitchen/office.
@reg036 The SD DVR forums have more on the technicals, but basically SD says the ball is in Roku’s court to watch liveTV on SD’s HDView app. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there were DRM licensing conflicts at the bottom of it.
What’s McMC? I use the paid MCE Buddy (win10 x64) which has current (paid) comskip, handbrake, ffmpeg, etc transcoders and HW GPU support. I honestly don’t notice the ad removal and transcoding anymore with an i5 (from an Athlon X4).

@mfladd I have various low end Roku and fire sticks. They all work fine. One perk of the Roku is the Roku Channel- free movies and TV shows.
@mfladd The standard Bolt and older Roamio are made for cablecards and have no OTA ability. They replace renting a DVR from Comcast or Charter/Spectrum, and you still pay for cable.
The Bolt OTA has no cablecard ability. The OTA models are either “all-in” or monthly fee for guide and software updates. IMO, the all-in option is worth it. ROI is 2 years, I think. Savings from cord cutting, ROI is 3 months. I don’t think the Bolt OTA feature of 4K is worth the premium, so recommend the Roamio OTA. You’ll also want direct gbit or moca internet if you’re streaming, even more so with 4K content from Amazon or Netflix.
For “casting” Tivo, I transfer recordings to a PC with KMTTG and playback via Plex apps on phone or smart TVs. There are Tivo Minis that are extenders, but need wired connection to the main Tivo unit. There are also Tivo Stream units that let you playback recordings via a Tivo app.
Roku doesn’t seem interested in DVR and on consuming streaming content instead. Plex just dropped support for plugins, so doesn’t seem interested in being your streaming UI. SD just added a package of cable channels that stream to its tuners, a la Sling. Tivo might follow with its own app/access to similar bundles as cable channels offer decoupled streaming bundles, or push to Amazon for that (like HBO is now).
@mike808 In 2014 Amazon licensed a portion of the HBO library in an exclusive licensing agreement. Not all shows are available, and not all seasons of many of the shows that are represented. HBO GO and HBO NOW offer the full library. Also, HBO declined to renew their agreement with Amazon and Amazon looses the right to that content at the end of the year. I suspect HBO hopes to grow it’s HBO NOW subscription service, and this is a strategic move in that direction.

@ruouttaurmind I think the standalone channels will move to unbundled streaming, if not already. e.g. individual channel streaming, like CBS, HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, etc. And bundles, like now with Sling, Disney, SiliconDust Premium, Hulu, etc.
Things are in flux, so there might be good deals for consumers until it consolidates again. 5G might even kill OTA.

@mike808 MrMC is a Kodi fork, plugins disabled, it’s available in the Google/Apple/Amazon ecosystem. Best for local media playback. It is developed and maintained by the developer who did all the original porting of Kodi (XBMC) to Android and now the guy who has been the Android maintainer of Kodi. Basically the 2 guys who know more about Android Audio/Video playback then most others combined. The Nvidia Shield box, Apple TV, and Amzon Fire are the main focus of the project. It’s a paid app but the Android code has the best transcoding engine out there and it’s updated frequently. mrmc.tv
@mike808 And I did not specify my need when mentioning tivo, but it was for a DVR system. OTA is very sketchy here, with only one station available, so it that doesn’t mean that much to me. I am looking into other options for locals.
@mfladd @mike808 I also stream on a 12mb connection (avg 10.5 down, 1.7 upstream). I also think it does fine, mostly.
When I had a roommate, and he would sit in his room streaming pretty much nonstop, there wasn’t much else I could do. Online gaming was pitiful, remote access to my video doorbell was intermittent, grabbing a fuk was nearly impossible, etc.
Even now, being the only one in my house, 4K streams take 4 or 5 minutes to ramp up, and often won’t ever make it to full 4K. FHD streams usually start at 480 and usually ramp to FHD after a minute or two. Netflix is better than Prime Video. HBO-GO is better still, usually reaching FHD in half a minute or less. AMC is up there with Amazon in the “no hurry to reach FHD” category.
These are my own experiences, obvs YMMV. MANY variables here. From ISP to local network hardware, local network overhead, configuration options, etc.

@Raider I just got home from my travels on Friday and was able to set mine up. So far I’m loving it! I originally intended to use it in the bedroom on a dumb TV, but it’s so much better than the integrated features of my Vizio smart TV in the living room, I think I’m going to leave it in there. Now I wish I had a second one for my bedroom.
My only complaint with it: it screws with the CEC function. I used to be able to turn on the satellite receiver and the TV would automatically power up and switch to the correct HDMI input. But with the Roku in the mix, CEC doesn’t work anymore. I’m guessing maybe it’s because the Roku is always on. But other than that, no complaints so far.

@ruouttaurmind This was to upgrade from a well used Roku 2, which at 7 or so years old began to run really slow on channels updated in the last year or so (meaning most of them). Load times are insanely quick on this thing and the image quality is even much improved (on a 1080p set).
I haven’t checked out the CEC features on the new model, however other Roku models never effected that on sets that I have seen them connected. All models have used the “always on” model. With that being said I have not used a Roku on a Vizio so maybe their interface works differently. No idea, wish I could shed some light onto that for you.

Yes, you can cast from most streaming apps (that I’ve tried) on iOS devices.
No, I wasn’t able to cast from my iOS devices to my Fire TV Stick.
There is no specific app required on either platform (iOS or Android). Casting is accomplished by each individual streaming app (Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu, etc.)
This information is from my own experience with my devices and apps. Please do your own due diligence before committing any significant resources.
@mike808 As soon as you have enabled google chromecast from ipad, tablet, phone, chromebook etc. You will start to see an icon for casting which you can hit to cast. I only use mine for casting things that are not readily available as an app on roku, STV, or FS. No, you cannot cast to a firestick.

@jasneko @sammydog01 Out of the bag, very soft. I got the mink (instead of the sherpa) version, since it really doesn’t get cold here in SoCal. It’s dye-sublimated, so there’s no texture to the print at all, as the ink is vaporized into the polyester fibers themselves.

The third pair I got was the corunus. All white with a black outside edge. When I wore it to a Halloween party, everyone was on edge looking at my face. They thought they looked super freaky, but cool.
If you try to read about buying contacts online, there’s a lot of people that will tell you not to because you’ll ruin your eyes. People hurt their eyes because they don’t learn how to properly care for their contacts or they will wear them to bed, sometimes for days on end. I was very happy with my purchase.

The lower receiver and pistol posted in this thread are federally controlled items. Despite what you may believe after watching sensationalistic reports on the evening news: Although these items can be purchased “anonymously” via the interwebs, the seller is strictly prohibited from shipping them to any other than a federally licensed dealer. The dealer must then submit the transaction for approval (the specific process varies by state but involves a NCIS background check), then have the buyer complete a federal transaction form (4473 IIRC) before the licensed dealer can release the items to a buyer. The local licensed dealer is also strictly bound by laws and regulations in their local jurisdiction. Unlike those reports on NBC, it is a very restricted process.

A surge protector that is connected to the mains should be considered ‘on the clock’ - once you get past the manufacturer’s recommended replacement time period, you’re on your own. Unless you have access to a surge generator you won’t really be able to test if the MOV is still ‘good’, and since you could be in a ‘one-and-done’ situation (the next surge gets clamped but takes the MOV out), it’s not really worth testing it.
You could (theoretically) replace a questionable MOV with a comparably-rated one if you just want protection and don’t care about dealing with manufacturer’s warranties. They’re available from a variety of suppliers - energy-handling and voltage clamping level are the key spec items to look out for.
The safest thing to assume is that if the surge protector is older than the manufacturer’s equipment guarantee, assume the MOV isn’t in there at all (i.e. there’s no protection).

That said I still have UPS’ (uninterrupted power supplies) with voltage regulation behind all my expensive electronics. But it does all depends where you live on what you need. @reg036 @sammydog01 I’ve just begun using my first Alexa product (the Dot from Woot). I had a Fire TV Stick (hated it) and a Kindle (didn’t love it). I still have a brand new Fire 7 tablet in the safe that will likely never be opened.
I’m a very regular Amz shopper, but I haven’t had overwhelming love for the devices. Also, my Prime subscription expires in January and I won’t pay their latest price increase, so Amz Prime Vid will be going away. I can never get Prime Vid to stream reliability at 4K anyway, so…

@ruouttaurmind @sammydog01 I use my 7" for ebooks mostly, 10" for portable video watching, sits next to the computer on the desk and is playing through my echo for better sound. I have a Dot in every room as I have voice controlled lights everywhere now. I’m still on a 1080P TV so no 4k for me yet (Hell my TV is over a decade old but 57"). The Dots are great for timers, weather, news while cooking/dishes/laundry. I use mine for ambient noise while going to bed/napping and alarm clock. You should go into the Alexa app and look at the skills there are some great games and trivia ones, Jeopardy is awesome! And whole house music is pretty good. I should also add my Dots/Echos voice control my Fire TVs so I’m in full lazy mode on the couch. You 4k issue might have to do with your wireless router or stick positioned to close to TV (some TVs are quite noisy with RF interference).
@reg036 I have a number of Alexa Skills enabled currently, including one that controls my Dish satellite receiver and my Vizio TV (as well as several TP-Link and Belkin wifi outlets). I’m pretty disappointed in the functionality and reliablity of many of the Skills I’ve experimented with, but I understand that’s not really Amazon’s fault since they do not actually write the Skills. Also the lack of documentation for most of the Skills is very frustrating. It would be awesome if each Skill had a full list of the specific commands and syntax listed, but most do not. They simply suggest “Try…” and list a handful of functions.
RE: 4K, the issue seems to be Amazon’s, not my network or hardware. Netflix 4K streaming is very reliable, as is also the case with the few other streaming providers I’ve sampled. It’s only Amazon that struggles to deliver 4K. It usually takes several minutes for the stream to ramp up to 4K (several times it just never made it to 4K), and then it will hop between 4K and 1080p frequently. Through a single episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for example, it skipped between FHD and UHD perhaps a dozen time.

@reg036 You nearly had me convinced. I was on the edge of pulling the trigger for this. Then… I noticed the version HSN is selling is the previous gen, not the new one with the upgraded remote control (integrated IR in the remote). That was just enough to tip me back off the edge.
@ruouttaurmind I just got one of those remotes today as a replacement for a broken remote (Amazon gave me it for free) but with the cube it will Ir control the tv via voice so I’ll take that, and iirc Amazon is giving a discount to cube owners on the new remote, I’ll have to go look that up.

If anyone finds any good android tablet deals I’d appreciate a heads up. I’m looking for one with at least 128g hd, preferably Samsung. My friend is looking for her first tablet, for web surfing and simple games, so something reliable and not full of bloatware is all she needs. I’ve convinced her she doesn’t need to replace her elderly laptop, that she’ll get better use out of a tablet, so I want to be sure she gets a good one.
Wow, all the tablets I’m finding with bigger than 32g hds are windows. What’s the deal? My phone’s 128g, why aren’t there tablets? I can’t put all the games I want on my 32g tablet, even with moving most to the sd card, some won’t go and the big ones have trouble updating.
@moondrake I find most Android tabs are in the 16-64GB range. I usually save a few bucks and go with the lower storage, then use the biggest SD card I can with the device. For example, my Galaxy Tab S3 is 32GB but has a 128GB sdcard. More than enough storage IMO.

Then I got to reading the tech specs and realized it’s nothing more than a bluetooth microphone which accesses the Alexa app on your phone, and uses your phone or car stereo speakers. Seems like a better option to get a Echo Dot and use it in the car. You would still have the option to plug it into your car stereo if you wanted better sound.

@ruouttaurmind It was my understanding you could connect your car stereo to the Echo Auto device via Bluetooth or Aux. (not through the phone) I was thinking the Echo would use your phone’s data to stream the content and not just use the app on your phone. I assumed it would also use your phone’s GPS for location-based stuff, but if it’s just relaying the phone app’s response to the Echo as a bluetooth speaker, I don’t want one. There are already devices that do that.

@ruouttaurmind the 2nd piece isn’t bad, it’s just saying that’s how it sends sound to the radio. Connects TO the car and not the phone.
The first bit is obvious it’s using your cell data plan. (duh) It could just mean it uses the app as a means to sync and communicate things from your phone like GPS or other features. I don’t see it working like the song will be streaming in your phone’s app and simply relaying the audio to the device. If that IS how it works, then meh.

to add Bluetooth music and calling to a car which only has aux in (way back in the center console under your elbow no less). It’s a Bluetooth receiver, microphone and three buttons on a puck that I have yet to permanently mount. A Dot in the car was one of the avenues I looked at to try to solve this problem but decided it had some problems.
It looks like both of these might really do pretty much the same thing. I’ve not tried to use the alexa app with mine. But I do think Amazon puts a lot into their microphone arrays, so I signed up for a pre-order invite so if I get invited I can compare them.

Mine has a couple more features, but the mic is pretty bad. FM modulation is helpful in the truck which has no AUX input, and the audio quality is decent. But that mic though. I signed up for the Echo Auto because most of my use is with Audible app, so hopefully Echo Auto can stream from offline content on the phone rather than online streaming for all Audible content.

My phone already auto connects to the AUX Bluetooth dongle in my car and plays music from my music files, no data cost. I can use it for phone calls, texts and maps. I can do all this hands free with Google Assistant. What does this device add to that arrangement?
