Unofficial goat day 3.
4Yeah we skipped day 2. It was cyber Monday, all I was gonna tell you to do was shop anyways. So now on to day 3. Everybody should have their advent calendars since December has begun. Show me yours and I’ll show you mine even if you just got a plain $2 chocolate one).
Do you look forward to advent calendars? What do you like about them? Do you buy the same one every year, or do you experiment with new ones? Do you ever buy advent calendars after the new year, when they go on clearance? I’ve gotten some great deals on make up, skin care and beauty ones. I just open them all up and take everything out. I’ve even done that and then gifted the items in a nice little bag or box. Two of my niece’s have been getting into makeup and it’s sometimes cheaper to do that for their bday gifts than buying the stuff. They use it like once or twice and move on to the next item, that way I’m not wasting a bunch of money and they still get their fix and can play around and see what they like. So lets see what you got!

I have never had an advent calendar.
I get the chocolate ones and apparently Christmas is over already.
Speaking of advent calendars, what order are you supposed to open them?
I had never in my life thought that there was any question about it, but tonight discovered that my wife also thought there was no question about it, and that we differed in opinion.
I don’t actually care much (if I’m “right” or “wrong”), but I’ve gotten curious. I suspect it may be one of those regional/cultural/traditional things where different people will have different customs.
FWIW, and to mostly answer the original question, our kids have [semiprecious] gemstone advent calendars this year (from grandma). I think this might be the first time we (i.e. my kids) have ever done one, but I’m probably forgetting one from years ago.
And sorry, but I’m feeling to lazy too go take a picture of it right now. It’s quite plain-looking on the the outside, though, so not much to see.
@xobzoo
I think I saw those when I was looking at advent calendars. I look at kids ones too, to see what would be the most fun to open.
I always start at number one but now that I think about it, I think you’re supposed to start at 25 and work your way backwards. My theory on this is bc in movies (like Christmas Family Vacation) that’s what they do. And if its done that way in the movies then it’s gotta be right lol.
@Star2236 @xobzoo Nope. They don’t count down the number of days until christmas. You start at day 1 and work your way to day 25. Several of the ones we had as kids had something special in day 25 indicating it was christmas day. A few of them had something christmas eve special as well.
@Kidsandliz @Star2236 And thus we see the confusion…
Though it doesn’t matter, I’m of the “count up” variety, and I cite the presence of “calendar” in their name as support for that. (also, the ones we’re opening this year are arranged very straightforwardly in order, exactly like a December calendar; would not be so obvious with those that arrange them randomly)
I acknowledge the presence of “count-down to Christmas” things, and even that those might be more fun(?) for some people. And I can even imagine the modern world labeling some of them as advent calendars, regardless of accuracy.
While I’m here, dictionaries don’t always help:
Wikipedia says “[…] used to count the days of Advent […]” which feels much clearer and unambiguous.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But I don’t really care anymore. I’m a language purist (and/or a stickler for accuracy), but I recognize that people will be people, and it isn’t worth my energy to keep fighting a [mostly unimportant] battle I can’t win.
(or maybe I’ve just given up on everything?)
As kids we’d sneak opening all the windows and then pretend surprise when it was finally the day to open that day.
I haven’t had one in forever, but I got my little guy the $2 chocolate one from Aldi.I would have gotten myself the hot sauce one but it was nonexistent when I went to the store.
It’s fun to show him the calendar and get him to find the day. (In this house we go by the date.) 1 he found before I did. 2 was slightly tricky as we found 12 and 20 first , but we got there.
I would also accept the Wera Tools advent calendar except I’ve not bought one.
I’ve seen dice advent calendars on Kickstarter a couple times.
Right now I’m wishing I’d gone through with one or more of them. (TODO: remember to try that for next year.)
I don’t think I could justify it for myself (i.e. “my family”), but I could throw money at it for someone else. In particular, my brother’s family. I know at least one of his girls likes D&D, and most/all of his family would sufficiently appreciate the excitement of shiny new math rocks.
Not that they really “need” more dice, but that’s not the point. It’s not like any of us really “need” more chocolate or booze or candy or whatever else you get from your Advent calendars….
@xobzoo
there is no such thing as too many dice
you need a full set in every color
you need a full set with weird symbols
you need one of those weird electronic ones as a paperweight
/showme the universe full of dungeons and dragons dice
@Cerridwyn @xobzoo You forgot the inductor dice and the cat dice.
