The Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-8-4 ‘Yellowstone’ class engines were actually heavier, and almost as physically large. I’ve seen DM&IR 229 in person, and it is no less impressive than 4014, sizewise.
I saw it pulling into the station here in Houston. The lighting was lousy, and I didn’t have a good perch for photos, but I was there. As it passed near my house, I’d heard it’s whistle, an unmistakable deep, hoarse bellow, so I grabbed the camera bag and headed downtown for the arrival.
My son & I chased 4014 for a bit as it made its way through N Texas (College Station - Hearne - Jewett - Palestine) back in 2019. It stopped for the night in Ft Worth on its tour this summer, so got to see it briefly again.
I’ll see if I can find some photos to post.
The largest operating steam locomotive in the world!
@PooltoyWolf But is it the largest ever?
@yakkoTDI That depends on who you ask.

That baby rolled through STL earlier this month or maybe late last month
@tinamarie1974 Denver too but I only found out at the last minute so didn’t go see it.
@Kyeh same, looks like we both missed out

Are you the person who shot this?
@bdb if that was directed to me, no. Just had a friend pass the link. It really is an impressive machine.
@duodec It was a fun video. Thanks for the share. I can’t believe one of these is under steam again.
