Two Truths and a Lie: Haircut Edition
6Hey, time for that old getting-to-know-you game, but this time with a tonsorial focus. (That means hair.) Here’s how to play:
- Post a comment below that’s like “Hey guys it’s me @jasontoon” or something.
- Under that, post three sub-comments describing two actual haircuts you’ve had and one you haven’t.
- Look at other’s people’s three haircuts and star the one you think is a lie.
- Come back on Monday and reveal the answer. Post embarrassing pics if you’re truly brave!

I @jasontoon shall go first
A long, lustrous ponytail
An ill-advised Caesar cut/moptop kind of thing with unflattering bangs
A Taxi Driver mohawk
@Sabre99 @RiotDemon @LadyLeela @narfcake @dave @oknekok @ignorant correctly surmised that I have never been a “long, lustrous ponytail” kind of guy.
@JasonToon so… you did forget!
Hair… oh yeah I remember hair… @chienfou
full out perm/afro (think Bob Ross)
Flat top
Mullet
@chienfou
Congrats to those who correctly chose … (drum roll please) Bob Ross 'Fro. I never had the balls to go there.
Flat top was de rigeur when I was a kid in the late 50’s/early 60’s so that was definitely in my style palette. Plus, it was easy to do at home; therefore “free”.
The mullet was a bit of a ringer, since it was actually used as a style during the filming of Tim Burton’s BIG FISH. I was an extra (no… I am NOT Albert Finney…) in the movie and it was a blast. I would highly recommend doing that given the opportunity. If you like movies it was great to see the ‘magic’ happen.
As a bonus I will say that I did rock some great long hair with headband locks in the 70’s. I made it myself on a sewing machine and everything (…the headband, not the hair…) I still carry my college ID around to freak people out. It gives hope to parents who bitch at me about their kids hairstyles and how they will never amount to anything. At least I think it’s hope.
Now my biggest problem is not the hairs that are turning gray… it’s the ones that are turning loose.
SIGH
PS my apologies to those of you that were anxiously awaiting this post. I have been in Orlando with the grandkids and totally forgot to go back and do this.
How do you 'do @huja?
Rocked a ponytail as a young liberal arts student. Envision playing hacky-sack in the Quad between English Comp and Calculus classes.
Because of things lost in translation while in Eastern Europe, got a buzz cut that made me resemble a turtle.
Blondes have more fun. A dye job in high school turned my dark locks into platinum strings of sunshine.
@huja I guess it’s obvious that I’m a No-Fun kinda’ guy as I’ve never been a blonde. Good job for recognizing the lack of Spaß in my Leben, meh.
@huja curious about your turtle haircut.
@RiotDemon I was in Czechoslovakia when I was a poor college student. I decided to splurge and get a haircut because it cost about $1. The thing was the barber didn’t speak English nor German. I didn’t speak Czech. So the receptionist stepped in to play the part of translator. I conveyed what I wanted to the receptionist in my so-so German. She passed it along to the barber in Czech and the barber communicated to me by reversing the process. After a lot of words and anguished expressions from all parties involved, the result was a shockingly close cut that resembled a turtle or Sinead O’Connor. -The End-
@huja
I guessed you right then.
@f00l gold star for you
@huja
/giphy "gold star"
@huja yeah, it’s funny how that can happen. I led a tour group to Rome once and when we got to the hostel we were staying at the girl who was the on duty host was from Brazil.
Me: Do you speak English (in my best, very poor Italian)
Her: No, do you speak Portugese? (sorry… to lazy to look that up).
Me: No, Parlez vous Francais?
Her: No
Me: Habla Espanol?
Her: un pocito
Me: Sprechen sie deutch?
Her: ein bissen…
We eventually settled on the Spanish and German… it was weird!
Hi kids, @Conandlibrarian here
Mohawk
No hair
Green hair
So…I will reveal mine if you reveal yours…
@conandlibrarian I love this gif. Today I finally noticed he’s not even filing his nail, but instead his toe pad. Hmm…
and the lie is… no hair. I have had every color in the rainbow, and I have rocked a Mohawk a time or two.
@conandlibrarian
Blew it.
C’mon @matthew @dave @Snapster @skemmehs @moose - I know you guys have had hair.
@JasonToon ouch
@JasonToon I’m waiting for this reply . . .
@JasonToon - I have seen @matthew with a mullet, aka Donny Dempster.
Since I’m getting called out…
Bowl cut as a child
Frosted tips in junior high
Shaved head in college
@Moose
I used logic:
You “experimented” in college by shaving your head.
And as punishment for turning bowls of food upside-down, you got a related haircut.
I’ve obviously made bad decisions but I’ve never shaved my head!
@Moose aww yisss… I got it right.
You would think I would have a more imaginative history:
@f00l
Just below the shoulders
@f00l
Shorter than chin length
@f00l
Long long hair.
@f00l hasn’t everyone had shorter than chin length?
@Ignorant
Short hair:
Not since it grew longer than that when I was a toddler. I don’t think we count the baby hairstyles, since we have no choice, and Mom chooses the style anyway.
Since I was age 3 or 4 years old, it’s always been longer then chin length.
@f00l Ah, I missed. Most horse people I’ve known have stayed away from the real long, which is how I based my guess.
@Pixy
Pony tails are for ponies and people. Lots of my horsy friends had longish hair.
My name is @matthew and I sported dat:
“rat tail” (ca. 1988)
“flat top” (ca. 1992)
“mohawk” (ca. 1997)
Three of you guessed correctly, while the other twelve know nothing of my tonsorial history; for shame. Never did I ever have a “rat tail”.
@matthew
Why did everyone have Mohawks? They look like s pita to deal with.
@matthew I voted rat tail simply because I was hoping for you never to have that abomination hanging off the back of your head.
demo here, with a fake Kickstarter K.
Long
Longer
Longest
I suppose I have to give it to the “Longest” group, because I never set a standard for comparison. So, I guess you win?
@KDemo
I am guessing your hair has usually been fairly long. Amirite?
I am purple loving Barney.
Long, about the middle of my back.
Long, with a touch of purple on my bangs.
Very, very short and curly.
One day, I had long hair to the middle of my back. I told my husband it was driving me crazy and I was going to do something drastic. By the end of the day, I had very, very short and curly hair. My husband went into major shock. (This was probably the final straw that led to the end of our marriage.)
It is my ultimate regret that I have never had purple hair.
@Barney you still have time.
@RiotDemon You’re just trying to get me in a whole lot of trouble.
@Barney life’s too short to not have fun hair.
@RiotDemon
Is this you?
@Barney It’s even socially acceptable these days (maybe not in Kansas?)
@sammydog01 You can find purple hair in Kansas, but not on my head… Yet.
@Barney wow, I’m so masculine.
@Barney They make hair chalk so you could try it out one day at a time with no commitments. My fiancee wants colorful hair but her workplace won’t allow it so I got her some.
@RiotDemon You make me giggle.
@djslack There’s a thought. A very safe thought.
@Barney
I guessed right here.
But Go For It!
/image “purple hair”
@f00l purple hair pretty wellthere are tons of shade ideas like http://hairstylezz.com/best-short-purple-hair-ideas/ . I find it pretty cute! My favorite brand: Manic Panic - Yes it fades crazy fast, but it’s cruelty free and plant based,
super easy on your hair. Plus they have the best selection of purple. I have yet to venture into the realm of bleaching at home, but i do my own color. mixing colors is so fun! It’s just like painting. The purple i have right now is a mix of Pillarbox and Wildfire.
@stream26 I like the dark hair with the blueish purple ends. I could see having that.
@stream26 next time Arctic Fox has a sale, I’m going to try their dye. Also cruelty free/vegan, but from reviews, it doesn’t fade nearly as fast as Manic Panic.
@RiotDemon why not come back and post pics?
@chienfou probably because I’m shy.
@RiotDemon I’ll go first then…
@chienfou 60s or 70s?
@RiotDemon Fall '75
I thejackalope have worn my horns:
@thejackalope As an overgrown flattop that ended up as a slicked-back “Elvisy” style.
@thejackalope With peroxide in it… that turned my brown horns orange.
@thejackalope Sheared off with Venus razors, to hide away from those who seek a

@thejackalope #1: Truth! I have an angular head on top, plus unruly hair. So, to get my hair to “spike” up, it had to be longer. By the time it would stay up, I just looked like a goon from Grease.
@thejackalope #2: False! I’m mostly dirty blonde, so instead of orange, plus the number of times I peroxided it, it was stark white. My hair was not in good shape.
@thejackalope #3: Truth! Shaved my head 2-3 times a week for a few years after high school/early college. Blind shaved it in the shower, and I found that Venus razors with all their moisturizers did really well. And I didn’t need shaving cream which just got in my eyes.
Only had a couple severe nicks the whole time, mostly trying to get the parts of my hair where everything swirled around smooth in all directions.
I am a sprinkles of kitty and I’ve had :
Nothing more than a short bit of stubble on my head
Hair past my butt
A reddish blonde afro
@KittySprinkles we need three separate comments so we can vote with stars.
@RiotDemon She doesn’t believe in coloring inside the lines.
@Barney True and she’s distracted
@KittySprinkles Short bit o’stubble

Hair past ass

I am RiotDemon and I’ve had…
An undercut where I shaved off the hair on the back of my head from the tops of my ears downward.
A male anime character’s haircut.
Dreads.
I don’t have any photos of my undercut, but this is essentially what it was, just shaved super short:
Great when I wore hats and a ponytail.
I have exactly one photo of the male anime character haircut, but damn… I’m not showing y’all because I look terrible. The haircut was ok, it’s my face, lol.
No dreads for me. Not a fan. I like soft hair that I can put my fingers through.
Other notable hair cuts:
Long bob with the back super short.
Hair to my mid thighs.
Shoulder length hair in my teens where people thought me and the middle Hanson (mmmBop) brother looked like sisters.
Dyed the same hair fuchsia… All of it. I got teased quite a bit, but actually made a new friend because of it. Nowadays crazy colored hair is so much more accepted. Usually only did two streaks where my bangs would be if I had them.
I’ve essentially only cut my hair short twice, and regretted it both times. My hair is to my butt again.
@RiotDemon
I guessed you never had dreads.
Your hair sounds fun.
Hey, it’s @dave, and I mostly waited because I couldn’t think of good ways to describe hair…styles, but here we go.
Blue and green (At the same time. I’d probably still do this if it wasn’t so annoying answering everyone’s questions about it.)
Rockabilly pompadour (I mean, I tried. For far longer than I should have. I think it still qualifies. So much mousse.)
Skater cut, long enough in front to go under my chin (Cut it because chewing on your hair is a terrible habit & a surprisingly difficult one to give up.)
The wisdom of the crowd is impressive, I indeed never did try a pompadour.
@dave Drat, missed another one.
Hey, it’s me, djslack. My locks have been presented in the style of:
The 80’s rat tail.
The mom-did-this bowl cut
Long, dyed Dr. Pepper can red, with the sides and back shaved underneath.
Oh yeah, we’re supposed to reveal this today.
I don’t recall ever having the bowl cut. Not saying it may not have happened when I was 3 or something, but none of my questionable hairstyle choices involved putting a cereal bowl on my head.
I did do the long dyed undercut for a good bit of the mid/late 90s. I’m kind of ashamed of that now, but it was not at all questionable at the time. Same with the rat tail; any kid who was anybody had that at the time. I think I may have even had to fight my parents to keep that one.
@djslack why be ashamed? Sounds cool.
@RiotDemon Thanks. I was imprecise. I have no problem that I had it back then, but if it were to appear on my head again tomorrow I would not be pleased (and possibly also unemployed). So ashamed is not the right word; I was lazy with my vocabulary.
@djslack
I guessed wrong then.
This Pixy has had:
@Pixy a short pixie cut (duh).
@Pixy Blue, green, and orange, kind of like an oil slick.
@Pixy metallic streaks for that industrial look.
@Pixy Wrong! I had a lot of Pixie cuts over the years.
@Pixy Seriously? This many people think I made this up? Unfortunately, the pictures got lost with the cell phone, but a lot of planning went into it and it turned out awesome. It really did have the oil shimmer look.
@Pixy Only one guess? But true. I have never done metallic. I just need to find another hairdresser to try with me, though.
@Pixy I picked metallic because I didn’t think it was a thing. Now I have to go look it up.
@sammydog01 Well there are two methods. Cheap, temporary stuff (that can also leave your hair feeling horrible) or carefully combined various colours (which isn’t cheap). I prefer to spend the money, which is also why I need a good hairdresser to help.
@Pixy
guessed you hadn’t done the multicolor thing, so blew it.
It is I, @UncleVinny. My hair has been all like…
@UncleVinny tasteful mullet
@UncleVinny entirely bald
@UncleVinny uneven bowl cut.
I never did have an actual mullet, but I did have the bowl cut and the bald head for a while.
@UncleVinny I wanted to guess mullet because I’d never heard of a tasteful one. Should of gone with my gut instinct.
@RiotDemon Google is no help at all in imagining such a thing.
@UncleVinny
@RiotDemon
/image “tasteful mullet”
/giphy "tasteful mullet"
@f00l I reject your example. No tasteful mullets to be found.
@RiotDemon
In google’s defense:
Hey, google only has reality to work with here.
I agree that the image of a mullet shown is “tasteful” only by comparison to other mullets.
And google does point out that mullets taste like balls and crack.
Haven’t cut my hair since 1983
@cranky1950
Your hair is cranky.
@cranky1950 so you’re completely bald, or it’s to your knees?
@RiotDemon bald, alopecia
@cranky1950
Is this why you’re cranky?
@hems79 No, actually it makes life much easier. Attracts some pretty weird wimmens though.
@cranky1950 why are they weird?
@RiotDemon you have to be there.
@cranky1950
I think we can tell why weird wimmen from here, without getting any closer.
is it me or did @jasontoon never come back to do his reveal either?
@chienfou It’s not just you! Posting it now.
Hi, guys, it’s @moondrake. I haven’t ever actually cut my hair, but here’s three styles for you to choose from.
There was the time I went blond and had it swept into a sexy updo
And then that time I got the crimp perm that made me look like Cleopatra
And that time I teased and hair sprayed it into a mass of anime style spikes
Since this thread is resurrected, I’ll play.
Hi guys, it’s @Thumperchick and I’ve done many a thing to my hair…
Cut more than a foot off at once because it took too long to blow dry one night.
Went full on bleach out mode for a summer and looked like a confused barbie head on a TC body.
Dyed it purple… and blue… and teal… at the same time.
@Thumperchick
Based off of this clip, people don’t usually willingly (and contentedly) cut off decent lengths of hair.
@PlacidPenguin haven’t you seen all the morning talk shows where they convince people with gorgeous long hair to cut it all off and then swoon over their new short hair? It makes me sad, especially when it’s guys that have nicer hair than me.
I’ve cut my hair short twice, when it was really long. I regretted it both times.
@RiotDemon
I don’t watch those segments from talk shows.
@PlacidPenguin
His new look is terrible. If they would of taught him how to actually style his long hair… Instead he looks boring at the end.
@PlacidPenguin I don’t normally watch them either, but for some reason, they always pop up in my YouTube feed. I guess because I watch hair tutorials for long hair, it assumes I want to watch it all get chopped off.
@RiotDemon There’s a whole bunch of these 100yob (years of beauty) videos on youtube for different nationalities. They are very interesting. This is one of my favorites.
@moondrake those I normally like, unless they’re chopping off hair.
@RiotDemon has the correct guess. I’ve never gone blonde.
@Thumperchick any photos of the purple, blue, and teal?
@RiotDemon I can find some of the purple, but really the blue/teal colors didn’t ever show up well on camera. (Ok, I’ve found one pic that shows the blue tone, one that shows more purple. I don’t have one that shows the multicolor, though.)
@Thumperchick love it!
