It's now the week of the Belmont Stakes. Do you think American Pharoah can win? I've been telling everyone that he's a lock for the crown, even before the Derby win.
Yes, even trying to be objective and not wishful. He's that good. Four years from now the first crop of his foals will hit the tracks, and they'll be interesting too. What does the weather forecast say? Some of the unraced competitors don't like mud.
It's so clear that he's one of those horses who loves to run at the end. The space behind him at the Preakness was unbelievable. So many Derby winners don't have the longer distance of the Belmont in them, but this one does. And he can handle the mud, obviously. Fingers crossed. It'd be a hell of a thing to see a Triple Crown won.
Bump. Why bump? Because it's the Triple Crown dammit! When this horse takes it and you miss it, it's likely you'll not live long enough to see another.
And place your bets for the 2018 Derby. He has a full sibling, one named Irish Pharaoh – born Feb. 3, 2015. The spelled this one correctly. Their grandsire is Empire Maker, who was second in the 2009 Derby.
@OldCatLady I've been fortunate enough to see 4 Triple Crown winners in my life. I was 23 when Secretariat won, and today I'm 65. I doubt my 40 something kids will see as many as I have. Plus, I got to see Assault in the flesh when I was a kid.
@Teripie I'm the same age, and I stood in front of the TV and cried and yelled at each Triple Crown win. Never got to see one in the flesh, though. Lucky you! Lucky us!
He also has another sib, a filly as yet unnamed, whose price just went way up. Their great grandsire was Unbridled, who won the Derby and Preakness in 1990. They also have Secretariat, Northern Dancer... Yeah, all those bloodlines are getting serious attention!
@sohmageek I think he'll run in the Breeders Cup Classic at Keenland and then retire. :( I wish they'd run him another year. He really seems to like it and it could make him one of the greatest ever, though he's kind of there already. If you can watch a good replay of the race, you'll see how his ears perk up when Victor finally lets him go. You can watch 100 other races and you'll see very few where a horse's ears are so perked up. Early in his career the handicappers where saying you gotta bet on a horse with ears like that.
@Teripie We'd love to see him run in person... We just saw an article saying if he runs in it whatever race it is they will increase the purse by a decent amount, but it still isn't that high.
@sohmageek You may get your chance to see him. From the New York Times this morning:
"The New York Racing Association announced that it would raise the purse for the Travers Stakes at Saratoga to $1.6 million if American Pharoah ran in the Aug. 29 race, the so-called Midsummer Derby."
My American Pharoah collection of win tickets has grown again. I've a got Haskell Invitational $2 win and program on the way here. Whoohoo!!! Love that horse!
Hail the tail!

I hope he gets the 3rd jewel. It's been a long time since I've seen that!

@Teripie Triple Crown possibility and Women's World Cup the same day! I'm legitimately excited for both of these under-appreciated events.

And it comes in handy "smuggle it in anywhere" plastic packs!
What are we thinking? I'm hoping... It's about to start!!!
He did it He did it He did it HE DID IT going away! He had more if he needed it but HE WON!!!

Was an amazing thing to see! May never see the likes of it again.
@Teripie Well- both his parents are young, so you know they will be producing babies as long as feasible.

We all know this is the wrong forum for it right? This should have been on Drone.Horse
Bazinga!
@sohmageek ok... I'll never use Bazinga again. That was just bad. Very bad
Who just watched the race??? :)
@sohmageek I sure did! It was awesome!
@Teripie I'm really hoping that American Pharoah will come to Saratoga... if so... my wife, son, and I may be "sick."
