@Thumperchick I did see it a few years ago and took a bunch of photos. I'll see if I can dig them up in the morning and post them here. They are in my office and my pet bird is already asleep so I don't want to disturb him.
I do remember the moon being an weird orange color once it was in full eclipse.
Now that I had a chance to go through some old photos, I found one that I took of Jupiter in 2005. It's small but it is so far away so that was the best I could get.
@mfladd I got crappier phone photos. But I was also rushing in and out during commercial breaks in the Broncos game. No time to mess with camera settings.
To be honest, where I live, it's pretty hard to see so far. Maybe because it's still relatively near the horizon. It's cool enough so I won't be asking for my money back, though. I'll keep watching.
The images show some more detail if you open them full sized rather then in the resized window. Resized in the forum the surrounding stars get eliminated.
It was pretty but we had to catch it during breaks in the clouds. I also found out once again how inadequate my camera is for catching moonshots (need a zoom!).
There were people down the block howling at the blood moon... it sounded pretty eerie (they must have practiced ;)
@duodec as soon as the eclipse hit full on, a bunch of coyotes in the empty land next to our house starting howling making all the neighborhood dogs go crazy, then it was dead silent for about 5 minutes....yeah, I was not freaked out at all
It didn't look red here at all. Plus the only place you could see it because of trees, was out in the road and the street light was obnoxious. Had to hold a hand up to block it. I used some binoculars, but honestly, here it was very meh. bummed. The pictures look great.
@mehdaf This was taken with a Canon T2i with 55-250mm lens, propped on the roof of the car. I really could have used a remote shutter, come to think of it I should have used the timer...
@jsh139 I've had to use mirror lock-up when tracking planets. It is so sensitive that any vibration would cause blur so you need to keep the mirror up before you begin the sensor exposure.
@jsh139@cengland0 Depends… if it's long enough, the minor vibration of a mirror or fp shutter (leaf shutters are also good for mitigating vibration) renders MLU once again unnecessary. Of course, if it's somewhat-long-enough, you can ignore all the issues inherent to the camera and become the shutter yourself!
I was surprised at how much the moon moved. I had to use much shorter exposures (on a remotely fired mirrorless leaf shutter camera mounted to a cf tripod) than I anticipated…
@brhfl When I took those pictures of Saturn and Jupiter, they moved so quickly that I needed to use a motorized telescope with equatorial mount. I then used special software to combine multiple individual photos into one exposure. It took a couple hours to setup properly so the tracking would be right. I haven't used that telescope for about 10 years because it's too time consuming to setup.
I took some with live view on (in order to see the live image on the LCD, but which also locks the mirror down) and some without. Some on the roof of the car, some on a tripod. Both ways had a few good ones, and more bad ones. This one happened to be on the roof of the car, with live view on. I could have done better if I had thought about it ahead of time, this was just taken on a whim while taking the garbage cans out.
@thismyusername Thanks! Fine to re-post. I botched it when trying to embed the image rather than link to my twitter page. Now I can't edit that post above, for some reason.
@mhuyck I should make it clear that I'm not using the lens that came with the Meh Nikon, but rather an 18-300mm. And a tripod, of course. Although I got a nice deal on the lens (got lucky on eBay) I did still pay more for it than the D3200.
@mhuyck great shot! That's exactly what I'm using as well. It's my first DSLR but I really like it! I have the standard 18-55 kit lens and I bought a 55-200 but I seemed to always have the wrong lens with me so I keep an eye the 18-300 until I found a decent deal.
@stardate820926 I mostly came to this thread to see if you shared photos. (And... ummm... to procrastinate. I have a lot to do this week.) Glad you posted! They're gorgeous!
I was drunk,passed out, and on my way to hangover town. So I missed it. I even Turned off my MEH 11:57 alarm. I had quite a bit to drink yesterday. That happens when you have 11 guys on a beer bus. So many beers. Lol I probably went through 8 2-6 oz pours within the first hour. Then another 2-6 pours per brewery (3) with lots of beers along the way. Lots of good beer. Lots of shitty beer. I refused to try the brown note beer though.
i stupidly forgot my tripod. i usually keep it in the trunk of my car, but took it out to take a bunch of stuff over to Goodwill. so, i had to stabilize the camera on the roof of the car. the angle wasn't quite right so i used an empty bottle of hand sanitizer to increase the angle. sadly, it wasn't enough and this blurry shot was the best one of the night.
It was a little disappointing for me here in Dallas. There was some cloud cover that skewed my view a bit. I expected the moon to look quite a bit larger than it normally does as well based on all the things I read and heard leading up to it. If anything I think the moon actually looked smaller than normal.
Chicago was pretty cloudy for the first part of the eclipse, but it finally cleared up just before totality. In sequence -- I was shooting a handheld point and shoot (the Galaxy Camera I scored off Woot) at full zoom, so there was only so much the stabilization could do, but that's why we have 32GB micro SD cards and take hundreds of shots, to get the seven good ones.
This one was with my Nikon D7100 and the 70-300mm lens fully racked. Pretty happy that I actually got a fair amount of detail around Tycho near the bottom, but at this point it was pretty much just a quarter moon.
I didn't even know there was a lunar eclipse last night, until my son asked if he could stay up to see it. The whole family ended up staying up for it and I'm so glad we did.
I lost the piece to my tripod that attaches to the bottom of my camera, so as steady as I could, I took pics off and on for about an hour (10:15 until 11:15 EST). Here are a few of the ones that I took:
@brhfl Thanks! It's an older tripod that I got almost 20 years ago. Last time I used it was last winter to photograph some wild turkeys. Haven't found the missing piece yet, so I'm sure it's gone forever.
@thumperchick Seeing how this is kicked up to the top... makes me think you're looking for people to make their own moons... I hope people aren't going to post that
It is too cloudy in my area so I'll have to try again in 2033.
Same :(
@cengland0 NASA is streaming it live. It's not the same, but you can still see it!
@cengland0 here too
@Thumperchick I did see it a few years ago and took a bunch of photos. I'll see if I can dig them up in the morning and post them here. They are in my office and my pet bird is already asleep so I don't want to disturb him.

@Thumperchick Here are my photos from the 2004 eclipse.
Now that I had a chance to go through some old photos, I found one that I took of Jupiter in 2005. It's small but it is so far away so that was the best I could get.
Here's saturn
It's a little dim with all the background light around me, but it still looks pretty awesome.
I watched it fade away, then come back in bloody red...
and I tried to take a pic, but don't have my tripod so I got a bunch of blurry red dots.
@Thumperchick very cool - thanks. Looks like a giant pumpkin - so appropriate!
Crappy phone photo...
@mfladd I got crappier phone photos. But I was also rushing in and out during commercial breaks in the Broncos game. No time to mess with camera settings.
@mfladd The Great Pumpkin.
To be honest, where I live, it's pretty hard to see so far. Maybe because it's still relatively near the horizon. It's cool enough so I won't be asking for my money back, though. I'll keep watching.
Crappy phone pics, but did anyone else get to see a volcano as well? :)
I noticed the sunset behind me wasn't half bad, either!
It was really lovely, beautifully orange.
@jaremelz - Nice. I swear that crazy mountain moves when you're not looking. Even when you are.
@KDemo It's totally shifty like that!
At peak:
@Raider nice!
With light cloud cover:
Through some trees:
The images show some more detail if you open them full sized rather then in the resized window. Resized in the forum the surrounding stars get eliminated.
@Raider I really like the tree shot.
@Raider the trees one is the best I've seen on the net tonight, thank you for my halloween desktop.
@Raider The moon through the trees is beautiful. Thank you for such a pleasant start to the morning. :-}
It was pretty but we had to catch it during breaks in the clouds. I also found out once again how inadequate my camera is for catching moonshots (need a zoom!).
There were people down the block howling at the blood moon... it sounded pretty eerie (they must have practiced ;)
@duodec GET INSIDE NOW AND LOCK THE DOORS!
@mfladd It'll be ok, I have destroyed speaker dock shards, and they are sharp.
@duodec as soon as the eclipse hit full on, a bunch of coyotes in the empty land next to our house starting howling making all the neighborhood dogs go crazy, then it was dead silent for about 5 minutes....yeah, I was not freaked out at all

I used some binoculars, but honestly, here it was very meh. bummed. The pictures look great.
I went out in between chores, and did the best I could with a fixed, wide-angle lens. I'm pleased.
@brhfl I love it!
This was my best photo tonight...
@mehdaf Wow!
@mehdaf nice!
@mehdaf Excellent!
@mehdaf This was taken with a Canon T2i with 55-250mm lens, propped on the roof of the car. I really could have used a remote shutter, come to think of it I should have used the timer...
@mehdaf ...and mirror lock-up.
@jsh139 I've had to use mirror lock-up when tracking planets. It is so sensitive that any vibration would cause blur so you need to keep the mirror up before you begin the sensor exposure.
@cengland0 yep combine a long focal length with a long exposure and any movement or vibration blurs the shot.
@jsh139 @cengland0 Depends… if it's long enough, the minor vibration of a mirror or fp shutter (leaf shutters are also good for mitigating vibration) renders MLU once again unnecessary. Of course, if it's somewhat-long-enough, you can ignore all the issues inherent to the camera and become the shutter yourself!

@cengland0 that Saturn pic is almost unbelievable. It looks so scifi, very cool thanks for sharing it.
Some of you got some fantastic pics!
@Thumperchick it is clear you are talking about @mfladd and me, thanks so much ;)
@thismyusername Oh, mine was certainly the award winner :)
Here is my contribution, taken with the Meh Nikon.
(Mod edit 2 - I had it fixed for you...)
@mhuyck That is absolutely amazing.
@mhuyck not showing for me, so I am going to re-post it if it will let me
nice!
@thismyusername Thanks! Fine to re-post. I botched it when trying to embed the image rather than link to my twitter page. Now I can't edit that post above, for some reason.
@mhuyck your tweet didn't embed because you have an underscore in your twitter handle.
@mhuyck I should make it clear that I'm not using the lens that came with the Meh Nikon, but rather an 18-300mm. And a tripod, of course. Although I got a nice deal on the lens (got lucky on eBay) I did still pay more for it than the D3200.

Going into the eclipse
Full Eclipse
View from my back porch
@stardate820926 -These are amazing!!
@stardate820926 Stunning. How lucky are we to not only get to see this, but to have some great photographers in our meh community?
@stardate820926 love the time lapse!
@thismyusername thanks!
@stardate820926 Great pics ! TY for sharing

(nikon d90, f 5.6, 6s exposure)
@kadagan This age of darkness and debauchery that folks were promising has started off on a pretty lame note as well.
I'm a little late to the game (since I'm lame and went to bed not too long after this), but here's mine from around 9:00 MST:
I believe it was a 6 second exposure and 5.6 aperture.
It was a little disappointing for me here in Dallas. There was some cloud cover that skewed my view a bit. I expected the moon to look quite a bit larger than it normally does as well based on all the things I read and heard leading up to it. @MEHcus Well, black is slimming.

@editorkid quite a nice quarter moon though!
I stole this.

@Prissy What type of tripod plate is it that you're missing? Looks like you pulled it off pretty well, regardless!
@brhfl Thanks! It's an older tripod that I got almost 20 years ago. Last time I used it was last winter to photograph some wild turkeys. Haven't found the missing piece yet, so I'm sure it's gone forever.
If it wasn't cloudy I would've been posting some fantastic shots here.
@juststephen if I had a good camera and knew how to use it I would've been posting some fantastic shots here.
@thumperchick Seeing how this is kicked up to the top... makes me think you're looking for people to make their own moons... I hope people aren't going to post that
@sohmageek agreed. nothankyouplease.
