i was just thinking about this because i always have to needlessly customize everything i buy. definitely wouldn’t be too difficult to get a sheet of aluminum laser, plasma, or waterjet-cut into a shape. some local Maker community could pull it off.
but i don’t make enough toast, nor need a toaster, to do it. if you need a design drawn up though i could do it!
Seems weird to not have a design-on-metal printing service so you can make your own toast designs. I bet there’d be a hot trade in “marry me” toast plates, and maybe a few “I want a divorce” toast plates.
Also, if you’re going to put designs on a toast product it should be on this kind of toast product: https://amzn.to/2S1WlUb
… rather than on the kind of toast you’re about to cover up by spreading something on it.
Also, I’m buying it bc our current (Black & Decker?) model keeps melting its plastic shell. While that doesn’t affect the toast per se, it does add a few noxious fumes to the ambiance, and I’d like to avoid that particular aroma.
I don’t see Art, I just see flowers, smileys, rainbows, and hearts. If I could get one with Art on it it I could give Jesus a run for his money on eBay toast sales. I hear after Jesus and Mother Mary, Art is the one most sought after.
I have a toaster. Two actually. But seeing this little imprinting gimmick makes me want it so much it frightens me. Like, what emotional hole am I trying to fill? What void will novelty toast plug?
@canneddirt I would recommend against filling/plugging your holes with toast. Firstly, the rough texture might be quite abrasive (ouch), and don’t get me started on the infections of the yeasty kind…
Forget the silly toast art - it used to be easy to find slim end to end (“tandem”?) slot toasters rather than these fat “traditional” side by side slot toasters.
Our slim toaster is getting old and its spot on the counter does not suit a fat toaster.
@unksol it’s always comforting when the second heading in your product description is “why doesn’t this do the thing it’s supposed to do?”. That’s a sign of a reliable product. Wonder why it’s currently unavailable?
@RedOak I have a slim one too that has a cracked case. I like how they leave more usable space on a counter than a side by sides slot toaster. I haven’t seen one like we are talking about in ages - you know - basic, works well, space conserving, no extra stuff to clean…
I have a slim one too that has a cracked case. I like how they leave more usable space on a counter than a side by sides slot toaster. I haven’t seen one like we are talking about in ages - you know - basic, works well, space conserving, no extra stuff to clean…
Exactly. Our, probably 20 year old, model mostly works but is not pretty to look at.
Design fads come and go… kinda like the way it has become near impossible to find good, reasonably priced two-roller (tough roller blade wheel) luggage. Everything has those dainty little and brittle 4-wheels that break at the worst time whilst traveling.
@bdb@RedOak@bdb@RedOak Thanks for looking for us! This one apparently launches the thing you toasted out the bottom onto a tray rather than out the top. Has no removable bottom to clean it out. No room for a tray unfortunately. Had they just made it normal it would have worked and people even said in the reviews that it toasts nicely. Fortunately mine is still working and where the cracks are aren’t dangerous.
@bdb@RedOak The third and last one look promising (except for the price of the last one). They are several inches longer and a bit wider than what I currently own but closer than anything else so far. Thanks for doing all looking this for us!
But glass side doors would be a waste since toaster sits directly next to our beloved Breville countertop oven.
And the only KitchenAid product allowed in our home is the Pro, bowl raise, stand mixer. At one point our home was entirely staffed with KitchenAid appliances, upstairs and down. Every single one of them had premature failures and Whirlpool/KitchenAid/Maytag “Customer Support” was completely useless. In fact, our KitchenAid countertop oven was a fire hazard, confirmed later by many Amazon reviews but ignored by KitchenAid. It pains me since they are HQ’d in our state.
So that apparently leads back to the Target West Bend example… darned controls on the side tho!
@bdb@RedOak The long slot toaster (#3 in the list) has controls on the side including a knob that sticks away out. My ancient toaster has recessed controls and while they are on the side, they are practically at the end. In my case it doesn’t matter because of where I have it.
Also good to know that kitchen aid stuff dies prematurely. For $80 though it should butter the toast for us too…
@bdb@Kidsandliz good point about the controls being near the front. Out of safety-habit, we slide the toaster out a couple inches from the backsplash when in use anyway.
Our mode selector buttons are on the front top edge. Only the darkness dial is on the front side.
And our current slim toaster is actually slim. 4 inches wide vs that 6 inch wide model.
I’d also feel better if that 16-review profile were more mature.
Other than looking beat up, our current toaster is near perfect and has been durable unlike the prior two slim models we had from Maxim and, I think, Braun.
A bit embarrassed to admit our current toaster is a Kenmore - clearly pre-schyster, and longest bankruptcy manager in history, Eddie Lampert.
@bdb@RedOak Mine is a Kenmore too, 4" wide and 14" long. Says Kenmore electronic. Works fine. A bunch of cracks in the white plastic case. It’s perfect in size and lack of complexity for basic toasting needs. It does one thing well. Toast stuff. And I hate stainless steel because of finger prints. I prefer white. My toaster oven is white. My microwave is white. Now that being said, if I was forced into a “regular” toaster there was a wild polka dot one that was pretty cool to look at. No idea if is actually worked well as a toaster though.
Except the one I saw had a sky blue background color but similar polka dots. Actually there was another one that looked like outer space with stars, etc. Painted and not a photograph but Hubble telescope taken type of image.
@Kidsandliz hah! Sounds like the very same toaster. Frozen, Bagel and Cancel buttons. Ours is also white and has hairline cracks along the top edges surrounding the opening. 4x14 inches. Not gonna include a photo - not very pretty looking at this point.
@RedOak that is where most of my cracks are too plus some all the way across the top. I bet we do have the same one. Good toaster. I want another one just like it. I don’t even know how long I have had it other than a really long time.
If the only problem with your toaster is the plastic shell, it’s just a plastic shell. You can take it off and repair it if you really love the toaster. Epoxy, sanding, paint, good to go. I had to do this to make a toaster match the KitchenAid mixer in empire red once upon a time. It was in good shape, though, just the wrong color so it got a paint job. Toasters are simple machines and there’s more than likely only a few screws holding that shell on there.
@RedOak Does make me wonder why they don’t make some models narrow and small like ours is. Not everyone has a ton of counter space. The older toaster oven I have is a bit smaller than the newer ones that have the same internal space. Hopefully that will last forever. I am going to nurse my toaster along and maybe try to repair the plastic per @djslack’s suggestion.
@Kidsandliz Yah, those hairline cracks along the opening are more of a cosmetic issue than anything else for us. We’ll ride it out, hoping that either a proper design appears… or we luck out and find a cleaner example in an estate sale.
The odds of stumbling on one are not impossible - we apparently found other owners of this model in each other!
@RedOak Hey it was Kenmore. You know there are ton more of us out there unless people dumped them when stainless steel became the new fad. Due to that I think we are looking for used ones of these probably, what?, 10 years too late? Mine functions fine and its just cosmetic as well.
@RedOak unless they stick in there with magnets, in which case maybe tin foil would work? But if you can get that, then you have access to a time machine, so you could also just go to the future and pick up an on demand holographic 3d toast printer and a retro adapter to connect it to a 21st century outlet. Then you can recreate Dali’s Persistence of Memory in toast and fried eggs and be a modern art genius. The Persistence of Breakfast.
This can be combined with the 3d metal model kits Meh has sold in the past. If your kit is still unassembled, you can use the full slabs in the toaster to create fun toast-based kits of the Sydney Opera House, the Golden Gate Bridge, or the Wright Flyer. Imagine how much fun your kids can have building an SR-71 out of toast!
“Extra-wide.” Why is this good? Because you can put two slices in at the same time and have a toasted outside, soft inside sandwhich. Now with patterns!
I only logged in just to favorite all of the Jesus comments.

Looks kinda fun. Totally pointless, but fun. Probably not a very good toaster, tho. Maybe good if you have a lot of toast/sandwich eating guests, or run a B&B. Otherwise, saving my money for the covidocalypse…

@awk presidential.
Jamming metal sheets into a toaster? Sign me up!
@medz be sure to use a screwdriver to make sure it is seated well (snicker).
It puts the heat on to the bread, or else it gets the infrared
So meh is on a toast streak? Toasty big scarf yesterday, toasty toaster today… so will whatever you are selling tomorrow be toast when it arrives?
I feel like this is one of the least “meh” meh faces I’ve seen in a while.
What, no “Meh” impression plate included to make sure everyone knows your toast is Meh?
@phendrick And we need an irk and glen one too. For that matter also the baby arm…
@Kidsandliz @phendrick Seems like may be some aftermarket modding potential for those who are metallically inclined?

@kuoh I lean toward gold or silver; does that count?
@kuoh @phendrick Hmm meh should do this and send it to all VMP’s who bought the thing. VMP benefit. Right?
@Kidsandliz @kuoh I’ll seconal that emotion.
One of the few times I didn’t want a thing on meh, but wished I did. Envy people who can make little people hyped with toast art.

I have to say, this might be the dumbest thing you’ve ever sold on meh. Bravo, crew.

@mtb002 The Fondoodler is clearly worse.
More fun in the tub than a rubber duck!
If I had a new toaster,
One that is shiny and new,
Of bread 'tis a roaster,
I’d act quickly lest there be few.
My toaster would swallow bread,
And along with making it warm,
This machine after being fed,
Would cause an imagine to form.
@jewelshound is that the new Billie Eilish song?
I had a dream
that I bought a new toaster.
Not what you’d think
The toast had designs on it
@medz Yes. I paid $2,000 for it. A good deal.
Amazon:

There ya have it… meh.

What a crumby thing to sell.
Real men buy 4 slot toasters. I made that up. But I like it.
@jewelshound I bought a good 4 slot toaster 16 years ago when I had roommates. I’m sure all 4 were rarely if ever used. I still have a 4 slot toaster.
No Jesus, no deal!

@melliott that’s for toasting commercial toast. You have to pay twenty bucks extra to get it without special offers.

@Kidsandliz Yah, we certainly would not have gravitated to Kenmore, even prior to Sears being screwed up. I think ours was a gift.
Perfect use case for heavy duty aluminum foil squares with your own custom designs cut into it and hung in the existing toaster, no?
Especially if you keep a fire extinguisher under the sink in the kitchen like we do.

@djslack @RedOak We look forward to reports from both of you. Or your next of kin.
@blaineg @djslack
Your wish is my command. Although, I’m not quite sure whether to brand this prototype a marginal success or marginal failure!
Bread containing less than 100% whole wheat is verboten in our house, so the contrast is lessened. And perhaps true heavy duty foil would help.
No kitchen cabinets were sacrificed to fire for this experiment.
