To my mysterious benefactor: Thank you!
15I just received a FIRK (Fruity Irresistible Rumination Kit) out of the blue! No notice, and no idea which mehtizen bestowed this goodness on me. No idea how she got my address, either. The return address isn’t even in the same state as either of the previous FIRK receivers. I’d think it was creepy if I weren’t too busy gorging myself on fruit.
First off, pears!
Can’t get fresh ones in Florida, that’s for sure! These taste like what you’d expect: A better version of store-bought pears…a much better version. Extra soft, extra juicy, extra sweet.
Then, two kinds of grapes:
The small ones are the best grapes I’ve ever had. They have pits, but totally worth it. Just the right amount of sweet and tart, with a complex background flavor. The big ones look delicious, and probably make good wine—that’s what they smelled like when they got to me. I’m no wine maker, so that one’s a dud.
Lastly, a charging case for my iPhone! Perfect fit, and much better than the one I already have.
Whoever you are, thank you! You may find something special in your mailbox one day soon…

Oooooh!
But I think you earned this : )
Were the smaller ones kind of a greenish/bronze color with a sweet/smoky taste? If so, sounds like scuppernongs and muscadines…
@chienfou No, they were both a deep purple, almost black. And I don’t know what the large ones taste like, besides alcohol.
@Weboh
ok
@chienfou @Weboh
Concords, maybe?
@chienfou @Kyeh Concords it is/was.
@Kyeh @speediedelivery
and
@Weboh Guilty of stalking. I loved your fruit knowledge and pictures!
The note that should have been enclosed was left out along with a few other things that I had planned to pack.
That phone case had been glaring at me seems like forever. I was supposed to be shipping a box way back when and life got in the way. I am also a top notch procrastinator so that helped too. Anyway, I finally got myself moving in the right direction and visited the fruit stand to see what looked good. Next hurried home to pack the box to get it on the way with fingers crossed for a quick trip. Got lucky there - scheduled for Saturday and delivered two days early.
I really was not sure about sending the Concord grapes. Sounds like they were a bit overripe for my taste but still good. Welch’s has a plant and factory up this way and of course lots of wine. I know there is an ice wine that is popular. I am not a wine drinker though.
The larger purple, didn’t travel well, started as prunes. They were mellow and slightly sweet before leaving.
The pears I thought would survive handling for something edible on arrival.
There are several varieties of apples now if you are interested I can grab a few extra next time I go. I am planning pies soon.
Return box is not expected or required. This was sent to create a smile.
@speediedelivery Is “up this way” in north western PA?
@pooflady Yep. Something about when the glaciers receded left good ground for grapes
@speediedelivery I’m from North East, which used to be the home of the biggest Welch’s plant in the world. Picked concords in my teenage years, but now they have machines to do it that go 24 hours a day.
@pooflady I was Harborcreek. Those machines are something. I have only picked wild ones. There was some vines near my house where we would go and hang out. I am closer to Ohio now.
@speediedelivery LOL - I’m in Ohio.
Did it cross state lines? It that even legal?!
@medz
Reading about this fruit gifting is lifting my spirits up this morning. ️️
