@AaronLeeJohnson Yeah, it can be done, but you’re probably better off starting from scratch. A pi zero ($10) and a tiny OLED (<$5) and a custom housing would do the job, apart from the TV remote part. If you must, buy this for the remote and the plastic parts, throw out the guts of the TV and replace them outright. The ‘black blob’ chip is far too limited, given that it is hard-coded to the contents of the flash chip and not smart enough to browse, say, files on an sdcard.
I’m really struggling to figure out why anyone would have created the product. Presumably they actually licensed the clips (unless they claim some copyright fair-use, say, as educational). Even then, there’s enough electronics and plastic molding to make you wonder WTH was going through someone’s mind thinking this might be a marketable product. Why, oh why, does this product exist?
@Kyeh I admit I’m tempted to buy one for a star trek fan, but that’s at $10 - the design/target sales price had to be $30+. Meh likely bought these for <$5 (especially if they were thinking of selling that at $7.99, probably quite a lot less). Someone else can do the full teardown, but I would guess the parts and packaging alone are significantly more than $5.
But if people didn’t buy stupid products there would be no daily deal site!
Had seen these in stores at some point and wished they were cheaper. Welp, here they are on Meh, so I’m buying both! (I seem to recall there was also a South Park one.)
EDIT: Worth mentioning there is a more functional, similar product with a similar name, that is fully programmable, but costs quite a bit more. I have their ‘Thumby’ tiny keychain game console and it is a blast.
@PooltoyWolf I dropped by the forums to share that link to the Tiny TV. I want one but there are so many other toys at $50 I’d rather have. I do think the Gorn TV is worth my $10, tho.
@jcpseattle We’re the seller on that listing so we can’t really use it as a comp except to point to the reviews. There are better reviews on an old QVC link, but we can’t link to that site either.
@jcpseattle@troy
Well damn … I didn’t realize you guys were third party sellers at Walmart. Guess I need to check the “sold by” when I buy stuff from them to see if I’m inadvertently buying things from you that might be cheaper shortly!
This needs to be reimagined as a solution in search of a problem. So, think of wondering, at Christmas, where do I find an underwhelming techno decoration for the tree? Well, here it 'tis!
The kickstarter I seen years ago was quite similar but I do believe video files could be copied to it. When you changed the channel it began playing the next video. It was pretty cool but I think the price was around $100 ish.
Would be an interesting modding project. It’s probably not mod friendly tho, the soc will have a blob covering it, the display will have proprietary input connection (unless they sourced something off the shelf that already existed. Adding an SD card slot to expand the storage space for video files would be cool, but if it was never engineered to use one it may not be possible.
Maybe switch out the board with something similar that has more storage space. Who knows!
Would sure make a cool cheap project or a cheap stocking stuffer for Santa!
@dahobbs9 I got the kickstarter and they are fabulous. I also want to know what’s inside these knock-offs, so I got one of each. Hopefully someone can get into them and change the video.
I just seen someone shared a link to the tinycircuits.com website. From the looks of the dyi kit it Does have a micro SD card slot. So as long as clips are in the correct format and the SD card meets the max size accepted, could have some fun with the little critter
This is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen. I might get one if Meh paid me $9.99 to take it. Or I might not. I’ve bought some useless things in my time but this is much, much more useless than any of them.
I’m sure some Enterprising person put the Star Trek clips in there.
Of course if a successful hack is achieved, I think a meh version would be a hit. Definitely need “Something Went Terribly Wrong” for the opening clip.
@dahobbs9@ItalianScallion@mehcuda67 That could be disturbing for a random person to pick up and start watching. Maybe it would bother them more than it should.
I own one. It was a gift. It mostly sits on my desk and gathers dust. People occasionally see it and play with it. It’s kinda cool. If you have ten bucks burning a hole in your pocket I recommend it.
@Doodpants it’s all about risk assessment. Who’s going to sue me for making a false marketing claim for a novelty that might not last longer than the included set of batteries? You think I’m going to spend even the $87.95 for an hour of Discount Dave’s Legal Services and Taxidermy for an “opinion”?
Seriously, I’d love to see the anchor case for a class action on this.
“I bought one of these for my RV so I could watch my reruns of The Going Show and was emotionally damaged when all I could get on this thing was Captain Kirk!”
@Doodpants Sure, you’re correct legally according to the FCC. But I’m sure there’s a disclaimer in the packaging that satisfies this, and they’ll hide behind “these shows and movies were on broadcast TV at one point.” Possibly even when the clips first came out “Tiny TV Classics” is a correct term, because the majority of people didn’t have a huge TV.
@Doodpants@pmarin It was a low-budget underground version of The Gong Show produced by former interns who figured if they misspelled the name, no one would find out. It only lasted for two episodes, quickly followed by The Gone Show which was only one.
@Doodpants it really depends on what you feel the definition of a real TV is. It Looks like like a tv, retro tv from years gone past. It Does display clips from a TV Show, you Can adjust the volume and Change the “channel”. I didn’t see rabbit ears on top or mounted on the back at the top.
Maybe it’s a Closed circuit tv
I just couldn’t help thy self
The Star Trek one shouldn’t have a “functioning remote control for a complete nostalgic experience,” you should have to use functional switches/knobs on the front of the TV. I remember using knobs on my grandparents’ TV to change the channel when I was a toddler.
Zenith engineer Eugene J. Polley invented the “Flash-Matic,” which represented the industry’s first wireless TV remote. Introduced in 1955, Flash-Matic operated by means of four photo cells, one in each corner of the TV screen.
@marvelljones@mehcuda67@walarney@yakkoTDI yeah when I was my father’s house I would run over to the big console TV. Also to do things like fiddle with the fine tuning controls (we had a weak antenna signal so it was a constant fight)
Eventually as he got older we used a smaller Sony TV that had a remote. It could be turned on a cart to either the dining or living room. But we would “lose” the remote occasionally, as people do. My father made up fun words for things, and for some reason the remote became the “Dog.” So, like “where is the Dog?” Also when had a cat it became the “Dog”
My mom did the worst thing. She would put the remote on top of the TV instead of leaving it on the couch or coffee table. If wanted to walk over to the TV I wouldn’t have a remote.
@Kyeh@mehcuda67@pmarin@walarney@yakkoTDI Absolutely we had the wire hanger antenna! And it was bent into a shape that barely resembled a hanger for better reception. That or someone had to keep hold of it because we were able to pull in another channel when they did.
@Kyeh@marvelljones@mehcuda67@pmarin@walarney@yakkoTDI My first TV (that I owned) was a Sony, purchased around 1985. To save money, I bought one without remote control. Used to watch it in bed and, rather than get up to turn it off, I used a long curtain rod to stab at the On/Off button. About as silly as the Tiny TV product…
@marvelljones@mehcuda67@MrNews@pmarin@walarney@yakkoTDI So funny! My family didn’t get a TV until I was 12; they thought that way I’d read more, and I did. But later someone gave us one, so my sibs didn’t grow up culturally deprived. I saw those wire hanger antennas at my friends’ houses though.
@dahobbs9@marvelljones@kyeh Not only were we the remote, but my mom would tell us to adjust the volume to “save her legs”. Of course these days we’d tell her she needed to exercise.
And in our household we didn’t have a TV I was 8ish. Present from my grandparents.
@kdemo@yakkoTDI I can’t find a link, either. They were intended to be some kind of video memo pad. But you lost the recording when the battery died, and the batteries only lasted a few hours – long enough to think it worked, but not long enough for it to still work by the time it arrived. Or something like that. Surely somebody still has one stuck on their fridge?
Scoff all you want and I know it’s silly, but my little guy came in the mail today (that sounds wrong) and I absolutely love the tiny guy. Kinda wish I’d bought two so I can have one at the office and at home.
Got 2. One controller worked. One didn’t. But the controller that worked, worked for both TV’s. Peppa Pig seemed to need the controller more than Barbie (lazy much Peppa?) So I gave it to her… and the fam. Everyone’s happy.
@Kawnar@sammydog01 Same. Remote that doesn’t work, but I still love it. It’d be nice to have the remote for a few extra giggles, but I like it so much that I just bought another on SideDeal for a couple of extra bucks.
I wonder if there’s a trick to making the remote work?
As mentioned in another comment, the remote doesn’t seem to work (for at least two of us). I can’t currently find the instructions (they’re here somewhere). I changed the button batteries. Can anyone help a brother out?

This is definitely a “Red Shirt” item!!
@bigjl98

Was it originally going to be eight dollars, by any chance?
@mossygreen
@mossygreen Did it come up for a moment at $8? ($7.99?)
@Kyeh
@Kyeh The second-to-last sentence may or may not have been “Because it’s only 8 bucks.”
@mossygreen Ohhhh - a sharp-eyed reader, you are!
$10 is still too much. Maybe at $5 it might be a consideration.
$5 is still too much. Maybe at $4 it might be a consideration.
@haydesigner

Did Meh reach a new low?
@heartny There is no such thing…
@heartny Yes. And as soon as they can peel off this layer they will reach another new low. Nice to see they are always looking for more.
@heartny @yakkoTDI Meh is the infinite onion of retailing. There’s always another layer, and incautious peeling will make you cry.
I also see this ending up in a bunch of IRK boxes!!!
@bigjl98 yep
8 bucks, well at that price i would consider it,
No CRT no deal
@einrad fo real. I was hoping to play duck hunt on it
@einrad @medz
If I can customize the clips that it uses, I’ll have a use for it. I would put one of those classic Screensavers on it. Maybe Fish?
@AaronLeeJohnson Discussion of hacking a similar South Park version here:
(Photographs of the internals in the top-level post)
@AaronLeeJohnson @Wireball_ great find. Many flash chips are heat sensitive, so if anyone tries to do this be very careful with the heat gun.
@AaronLeeJohnson @gdorn Get a screen like this.
https://www.waveshare.com/product/displays/1.83inch-lcd-module.htm
I would recommend a Pi Zero W or Pi Zero 2 W so you can swap out the clips easier.
Oh, this is so stupid but I really want one!
So is @bradley289 clairvoyant, or an insider or something?
https://meh.com/forum/topics/tiny-tv
@Kyeh hahahaha I was wondering if I got too much sun today because I found myself wanting to buy one too.
@Kyeh
My first thought exactly.
BTW… After 9:00 Central Time and they’ve sold almost 650 of these!
@chienfou A victory for silliness, woohoo!
I have too much pointless crap already. Must pass.
@ergomeh I recently saw a similar item except you could upload your own clips to it. This is probably the crappy version.
@ergomeh Well, 12 minutes in they’ve already sold 53 of them.
@ergomeh Could be a good scale for people that like to make dioramas. Other than that, I haven’t a clue.
@ergomeh They’re selling about 10 a minute so far!
@ergomeh Dollhouses, maybe?
@ergomeh At least it’s stupidly fun, not stupidly “supposed-to-be-useful-but-isn’t-really.”

I’m surprised meh isn’t linking to the Walmart page for this. The Jurassic Park one is $30 there.
@jcpseattle We’re the seller on that listing so we can’t really use it as a comp except to point to the reviews. There are better reviews on an old QVC link, but we can’t link to that site either.
@jcpseattle @troy

I had no idea either…
Well that got my attention!
#clueless
In case you want to see one in action, here you go!
(Kinda cool they also have the old sign-off pattern in it!)
@MrGoodGuy “This video has been removed by the uploader.”
@PooltoyWolf Guess the other one was shy so here’s another:
@MrGoodGuy That one seems to work!
@MrGoodGuy @PooltoyWolf Damn !
I’ve seen thst episode.

That description narrative reads so MUCH BETTER when read up from the bottom, a paragraph at a time (no, DON’T read the words backwards).
Try it.
This needs to be reimagined as a solution in search of a problem. So, think of wondering, at Christmas, where do I find an underwhelming techno decoration for the tree? Well, here it 'tis!

I can’t resist, I gotta know what’s Inside it!!!
@dahobbs9 I got the kickstarter and they are fabulous. I also want to know what’s inside these knock-offs, so I got one of each. Hopefully someone can get into them and change the video.
The Star Trek one is kinda cool, but you know this will just end up being e-waste sooner rather than later.
Still, IDK…
@robson buy you a tiny display stand with a glass dome that sits over it. That would look pretty cool
Oh God! What did I just order!!!
@dahobbs9 same! X’s 2!
These are cute little novelties but I’m pretty sure I’d regret buying them after the fact.
Decisions…decisions…
@FightingMongoos Only one way to find out. Let us know if you do regret it.
@FightingMongoos @yakkoTDI
So…DYI instant regret kit?
I just seen someone shared a link to the tinycircuits.com website. From the looks of the dyi kit it Does have a micro SD card slot. So as long as clips are in the correct format and the SD card meets the max size accepted, could have some fun with the little critter
@dahobbs9 assuming you can upload while episodes instead of clips (and there’s a speaker somewhere) you could make a Gameboy of sorts.
@pakopako remote control for the game controller

Had to get it since it features my FAVORITE Spock wisdom ever :
@cfg83 My favorite:
@cfg83 This hits much differently after seeing Spock and T’Pring on Strange New World.
This is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen. I might get one if Meh paid me $9.99 to take it. Or I might not. I’ve bought some useless things in my time but this is much, much more useless than any of them.
Yes! Very useless and very pointless. That’s why I’m getting two.
@edyafree you’re playing right
@edyafree

Has someone figured out how to play Doom on it?
@coomes Funny you say that. I bought one of these around this same price point, but it’s actually an Atari 2600 with full working games! I couldn’t resist. Much more functional. Someone must have had these licenses and leftover plastic in China.
I’m sure some Enterprising person put the Star Trek clips in there.
Of course if a successful hack is achieved, I think a meh version would be a hit. Definitely need “Something Went Terribly Wrong” for the opening clip.
@mehcuda67

@dahobbs9 @mehcuda67 I want one filled with “Maybe It Bothers Me More Than It Should” clips.
@dahobbs9 @ItalianScallion @mehcuda67 That could be disturbing for a random person to pick up and start watching. Maybe it would bother them more than it should.
No OLED? No HDMI? Hard Pass!
I own one. It was a gift. It mostly sits on my desk and gathers dust. People occasionally see it and play with it. It’s kinda cool. If you have ten bucks burning a hole in your pocket I recommend it.
@Trinityscrew

It’s a deal Jim, but not a deal as we know it
@OnionSoup
@dahobbs9 @OnionSoup “Dammit, Jim! I’m a doctor, not a miniature TV showing clips of the life of my friends and me!”
I love Star Wars collectibles!
“stay away from the light Carol Anne…stay away from the light”
Is this a TV for ants?
@yakavelli it really is
@pakopako @yakavelli Must be for big ants like Siafu or Dinoponera
Belongs in 'Barbie Sci-Fi" Dollhouse.
The package says “real working TV!”, but if it can’t receive and display actual broadcast signals, then it’s not a real working TV.
@Doodpants @ybmuG Also, what is the “going show?” Perhaps an Internetz site for watersports fetishes?
@Doodpants @pmarin It was a low-budget underground version of The Gong Show produced by former interns who figured if they misspelled the name, no one would find out. It only lasted for two episodes, quickly followed by The Gone Show which was only one.
@Doodpants it really depends on what you feel the definition of a real TV is

Yall remember HitClips?
@ekjswim I do!
how many and how long are the clips?
these are CUTE! I bought Star Trek for hubby then i bought two more for friends after they saw it.
The Star Trek one shouldn’t have a “functioning remote control for a complete nostalgic experience,” you should have to use functional switches/knobs on the front of the TV. I remember using knobs on my grandparents’ TV to change the channel when I was a toddler.
@marvelljones knobs, so fancy. we had to use pliers.
@marvelljones Why not? Remotes are from the '50s.
@marvelljones @walarney @yakkoTDI
Pliers? fancy. We had to use siblings!
@marvelljones @mehcuda67 @walarney @yakkoTDI yeah when I was my father’s house I would run over to the big console TV.
@marvelljones @mehcuda67 @pmarin @walarney @yakkoTDI Did you have a wire coat hanger for an antenna?
@Kyeh @marvelljones @mehcuda67 @pmarin @walarney
My mom did the worst thing. She would put the remote on top of the TV instead of leaving it on the couch or coffee table. If wanted to walk over to the TV I wouldn’t have a remote.
@marvelljones @mehcuda67 @pmarin @walarney @yakkoTDI Maybe she was trying to force you to get a little exercise.
@marvelljones au contraire - not only were there functioning remotes in the day, they were even on the show!

Now, maybe if the remote looked more like this…

@yakkoTDI Because, despite being “invented” at that time, the majority of households didn’t have remote control TVs until the 1980s.
@Kyeh @mehcuda67 @pmarin @walarney @yakkoTDI Absolutely we had the wire hanger antenna! And it was bent into a shape that barely resembled a hanger for better reception. That or someone had to keep hold of it because we were able to pull in another channel when they did.
@Kyeh @marvelljones @mehcuda67 @pmarin @walarney @yakkoTDI My first TV (that I owned) was a Sony, purchased around 1985. To save money, I bought one without remote control. Used to watch it in bed and, rather than get up to turn it off, I used a long curtain rod to stab at the On/Off button. About as silly as the Tiny TV product…
@marvelljones @mehcuda67 @MrNews @pmarin @walarney @yakkoTDI So funny! My family didn’t get a TV until I was 12; they thought that way I’d read more, and I did. But later someone gave us one, so my sibs didn’t grow up culturally deprived. I saw those wire hanger antennas at my friends’ houses though.
@marvelljones
I remember those days, WE were the remote!
@Kyeh @marvelljones @mehcuda67 @pmarin @walarney @yakkoTDI I remember the noise the knob made when running up and down through the channels. My brother liked to do that. We had the repairman out frequently.
@dahobbs9 @marvelljones @kyeh Not only were we the remote, but my mom would tell us to adjust the volume to “save her legs”. Of course these days we’d tell her she needed to exercise.
And in our household we didn’t have a TV I was 8ish. Present from my grandparents.
Anyone remember those mini video players that meh sent to VMPs? The staff recorded a message on them, but none of them worked.
Huge, hilarious fiasco!
@kdemo I have been VMP since 2014 but I never got one of those.
@yakkoTDI - Maybe you just don’t remember? I tried, but cannot find a link. If I could only remember the brand name of the little units . . .
@kdemo @yakkoTDI I can’t find a link, either. They were intended to be some kind of video memo pad. But you lost the recording when the battery died, and the batteries only lasted a few hours – long enough to think it worked, but not long enough for it to still work by the time it arrived. Or something like that. Surely somebody still has one stuck on their fridge?
@walarney - Thank you! It was back in the days when the staff participated in fun and informative videos for the forum.
@kdemo @yakkoTDI what about checking the Wayback machine
@kdemo @walarney That fuku was oversold and I got the knockoff version with no player. I was sad.
@sammydog01 @walarney - you really didn’t miss anything!
@dahobbs9 - sometimes I think I AM the wayback machine (but don’t tell mediocrebot).
I’d get this for MIL if I could add clips, but she’s not in to either JP or ST.
Forgive its inability to scale correctly, anyone catch the movie reference today?
@dave You mean the movie @mehntalillness mentioned hours ago? Perhaps you should get some coffee and catch up on posts.
@mehntalillness @yakkoTDI You’re right! I was looking for the movie name and didn’t see it but, also, I do need more coffee

(sadly, I lack the skills to hack one…)
@thumperchick
@k4evryng ONLY if clips were from Episodes 4, 5 & 6
Star Trek, ok. But Jurassic Park? What does that have to do with 60’s TV?
@blaineg Well, that silvery TV looks like one I had in the 80’s which would be about right.
If you want to survive, stay away from the narrative.
I’ve got the mini Atari 2600. I’ve played it twice for a few seconds.
@blaineg WHERE CAN I BUY IT?
@sammydog01 It’s been a while, so I’m not sure where I got it. Probably Amazon. Atari 2600 Tiny Arcade is the name.
Well, just to encourage this kind of nonsense.

8/19/25 - My order still hasn’t shipped.
@Trinityscrew
There still a little time
Mine didn’t include a remote.
@Kawnar Mine came with a remote but it doesn’t work. Just as well because my TV didn’t have a remote when Star Trek was on air.
@Kawnar @sammydog01 Can you turn it on and off without a remote?
@Kawnar @Kyeh Yes, there are buttons on the side. It also has a test pattern sign off when you turn it off. I love it.
@Kawnar @sammydog01 Oh, good!
@Kawnar @sammydog01 Same. Remote that doesn’t work, but I still love it. It’d be nice to have the remote for a few extra giggles, but I like it so much that I just bought another on SideDeal for a couple of extra bucks.
I wonder if there’s a trick to making the remote work?
Mine has a super slow refresh rate, so it feels like it’s flashing like a strobe light. Anyone else have that issue?
I sent two OG Trek ones to fam who are fans and both were thrilled. It looks great and is a fun gift.
No, wait, I mean it’s terrible. Throw 20 in my next IRK.
As mentioned in another comment, the remote doesn’t seem to work (for at least two of us). I can’t currently find the instructions (they’re here somewhere). I changed the button batteries. Can anyone help a brother out?
