the (un)official stamp of mediocrity...
26you know what they make a lot of in china? shit people don’t need. so, of course, i bought some shit i don’t need.
i thought to myself, “what would be completely useless to everyone except me and a small group of internet weirdos on a particular forum?”
ladies, gentlemen and all you other bizarre folks, i give you the stamp of mediocrity.
read (from left to right), it says pingyong, which translates literally to ‘commonplace level’. or, mediocre in the new age tongue.
so there you have it. a stamp that says mediocre. kind of anticlimactic, ain’t it? but that’s what the mediocre stamp stands for.
long live, err… average lifespan the mediocre!

@mfladd the crazy thing is the guy that carved out the stamp was missing 4 fingers on his right hand. no idea how he managed to do it. definitely not medicore!
That’s pretty amusing to me! I have one of those too, somewhere in my stuff, that allegedly spells my name out phonetically - it was a gift from my aunt and uncle when they came back from China. Same ‘jade’ column, slightly different carving on top, virtually the exact same box with red lining and exact same red inkpad in a small round tin (careful, that stuff stains, and is runny and gets on EVERYTHING).
Interesting to see nothing has changed on this front in several decades.
@curtise yeah. the custom stamp makers were in every city i went to. i was mainly waiting to find the cheapest column i could that could handle 2 characters. there were plenty of bigger columns, but they were far too much. close to 10 or 11 dollars! that’s far too expensive to be mediocre.
edit to original post: read the stamp from right to left, not left to right. i knew i shouldn’t have had that second vodka tonic.
@carl669 I tried to reverse my image with text three different times based on your right to left - on imgur and failed. I shouldn’t have had that 3rd glass of Cab. Woe is me.
/giphy vodka tonic yum
I think the first line says “Net Weight 18 grams”
@cengland0 as long as the stamp doesn’t say “this guy’s an asshole”, it’s all good.
