The Snowman (1982)
12I didn’t think I’d be crying at work today, but here we are. I was listening to a symphonic metal Christmas playlist on YouTube and this song came up:
It was so familiar and I had to know what it was from. It’s the main song for The Snowman short film linked above. This was one of my mom’s favorite videos to watch every Christmas. When I looked up the origin of the song my eyes welled up right away.
Anyway, wanted to share the film with you if you’ve never seen it. According to the internet it’s more of a European staple.

This was a staple in our house for years. It’s lovely. I have the book too that has the pictures in the movie. My daughter and I would “read” it at night. She’d tell me the story on one page that the pictures would tell and I’d do so on the next. She loved that book and the VHS. It was played for years. I finally bought it on DVD as she had worn out the VHS.
She knew of snow before she had ever experienced it because of this book. The first time she saw snow she was on a sled with me pulling her around the yard waiting for her cousins to arrive (so we could go sledding) and before I could stop her she put her face in the snow. Up comes her little face covered in snow and she says indignantly, “You no say snow cold mom!”
Thanks @RiotDemon. Beautiful story and very timely. My youngest granddaughter just discovered the ephemerality of snowmen. Tough day for a two-year-old.
I have watched The Snowman with my mother every year for Christmas since I was about 6 years old. It’s a wonderful film! We finally managed to locate a DVD copy a few years ago.
Best thing I’ve watched all year. Loved it and the music. Thank you for sharing! Merry Christmas
