The Mything Link
8So, I recently posted a thread about crowd funding for my son’s new bar, Oakland Rec Club.
He just completed a promotional video, with an appearance by a friend you may recognize. It’s on the crowdfunding site here –

The original thread with more details is here.
.
See what you think? At the very least, I predict you’ll want to visit Oakland.

Boy Howdy, i can’t tell you how much I want to visit Oakland.
@cranky1950 - And that’s really saying something, from a cranky guy!
If you mean it.
@cranky1950 You’re cranky.
Awesome!
@dashcloud
Is the video working for everyone?
I couldn’t figure out how to post it here.
@thumperchick - Wanna put this video at the top of the thread (if @KDemo wants that) and delete this post?
@PlacidPenguin - Thank you.
It’s good here, I think.
@KDemo
That’s a very pleasing video.
Congrats KDemo and Sky! it looks like it will be a huge success!! I now have a reason to go to Oakland. By the way I had to click on the hyperlink to see the video.
He gets to drink at work AND he knows Kari?

/giphy lucky!
@medz - AND he knows me, don’t forget.
Thanks
@bdezak - No, thank you!
Ok. I noticed the menu has smørrebrød. Is he of Scandinavian descent?
@RiotDemon - Nope.
He’s going for an 80s rec club vibe. You may have noticed that the menu is in the classic style of the Pee Chee folder? Not sure where the smørrebrød came from, except they’re planning food that pairs well with beer and the specialty drinks. Also probably helps that it’s easier to eat while playing games.
@KDemo no idea what pee chee is.
It just caught my attention because smør in Norwegian is butter, and brød is bread. Apparently smørrebrød in Danish translates to sandwich in English. (Smørbrød in Norwegian)
Now I am reminded of the big breakfasts we used to have in Norway where we would just lay sandwich ingredients out on the table and make whatever open faced sandwiches we wanted. Whatever needed to be refrigerated would be put away, but the other stuff would stay out so we could come back at lunchtime and eat again. We would just brush our crumbs off our plates and reuse them. We would have a separate bowl for everyone at the table to put our eggshells from hard boiled eggs.
@KDemo looked up the pee chee folder. I think it was before my time. I didn’t come to America until the 90s and by then it was Lisa Frank and trapperkeepers.
@RiotDemon - Correction - he’s going for a 70s vibe.
You must be so young!
Wonder when they stopped using Pee Chees. They were ubiquitous when I was in hs. I’m guessing a lot of people here remember them too well.
@RiotDemon - That sounds like an awesome way to eat! My stepfather was German, he ate lunch that way. Just grabbed whatever was in the fridge and piled it on bread, open face. Usually involved something like sardines and sliced tomatoes- whatever else was at hand.
You have some great memories.
@KDemo I’m in my 30s.
During holidays we tend to eat breakfast the same way. Not quite as elaborately as we did in Norway though.
Some items normally found on the table when we were in Norway:
mild cheeses with a slicer
Salami
Some kind of salted ham
Cured sheep leg
Herring (yuck.)
Cucumber slices
Tomato slices
Hard boiled eggs and a slicer
Some kind of fish roe that came in a squeeze tube
Squeeze tube mayo
Butter
Fruit preserves, marmalade and strawberry come to mind, along with, I think, lingonberry
Apparently my mom forced my dad to put plates on the table. I guess it was quite normal for his family to just eat right on the table when it came to sandwiches. I guess if your table/tablecloth is clean, what’s the difference?
@RiotDemon - Wow, so much food! Most of it sounds like it would keep for long periods. Probably wasn’t much different before there was refrigeration.
When I was in Europe, they had squeeze tube mayo/mustard mixed. Wonder why it’s not a mainstream thing here?
@KDemo I did see the squeeze tube mayo when I was at Ikea. It’s over an hour away though.
Maybe because it’s not enough mayo. I mean, look at how much mayo comes in a normal jar of hellman’s. If I make spinach and artichoke dip, it uses probably a cup of mayo. I’d need a couple of squeeze tubes, haha. Or make mayo from scratch…
@KDemo Cuban sandwiches, the yellow slimy stuff us mayo/mustard, usually the cheapest of each they can find.

: )
@KDemo 16′ long, 300lb… a counter, perhaps? And for whatever reason they had to lower it from the stairs? Does OSHA know about this?
@f00l

@brhfl - Not sure what they were trying to lift, but pretty sure I know why he went with “wreck center”.
Its time to visit Oakland.
Update
Kari posted the project to her FB page.
To quote my son -
ORC investment, better than a $400 Wi-Fi juicer.
Investment has been reset, so investors’ accounts were cleared and everyone must reinvest. Return is increased, term is lengthened. 3 weeks remaining to make it rain.

This is it. Final 7 hour countdown.
I’m ecstatic to report that the minimum has been met, all is on track.
I have no way to tell if anyone here invested, but if anyone did, you have my heartfelt gratitude.
