Situational comedy is owed entirely to assholes.
We have conditioned ourselves to enjoy watching these people flail about in their own ignorance, but hopefully we know better than to be involved in a situation like that ourselves.
Not to downplay everything Irk said about all the problems with The Man With the Yellow Hat, but I grew up with a different complaint about the series.
The repeated plot (at least with the old and new TV shows) goes something like this:
George secretly makes a royal mess of things
People and things are put in danger
something, something, something
George accidentally does something good, and the disaster he set in motion is partially averted
Everyone cheers for George and he is praised for saving the day [from himself], and never disciplined (or even talked to) about the things he did wrong
Curiosity is (usually) good, but “ignore all rules, instructions, and safety precautions” does not seem like a message we want to be teaching our children.
