Does it count that I did a 39.3 mile walk for breast cancer? I did run part of it, actually, but no real clue how far. My legs were so tired of walking, it actually felt better to run. How messed up is that?
@bakeyoural It absolutely makes sense. Any change in motion feels good after a while. And congrats on that. I wanted to do that, but couldn't handle the fundraising.
Naval Aircrew training in Pensacola, FL. They wanted to break us in slowly to the hot and humid climate so the first day we only ran 3 miles. Half of that distance was in beach sand. We worked up to the 5 mile runs that week in 1/2 mile increments. Sometimes they gave us a cooling off period midway. That was when we ran the O-course (Obstacle course) My running days are pretty much over. Bad knees. From my job as a Aircrewman on minesweeping helicopters.
@Mehrocco_Mole If you ran on Mustin Beach all the way towards Sherman Cove past the end of Sherman Field then you ran on what my husband called "my beach." That's where I hung as a teenager & it's the beach we always go back to when I visit my Dad. (Both my Dad & my husband did tours at Schools Command, and lucky, single me did the AOCS Regimental Weekends). Damn, if it's not ear shattering when the Blue Angels are training! We have a section of one of the walls (the bigger one) from the "O" Course that washed up on the beach after hurricane Ivan. It hangs on a wall in our garage with a metal plaque that says Omni Viri When my husband was Director of Aviation Training, he used to PT along the old course and found it stuck in the bushes.
The old course vs. the new, more female friendly course instituted by Admiral Tracey was a sore subject in our house. Lowering & changing the physical standards when you're trying to build warriors is never a good thing.
@SSteve I was the same way until I hit my late 30s and discovered it by accident. I was speed walking before work. I got a late start and was still about 2 miles from the house when I realized the time. It felt so good doing those little interval of walking & jogging that I did it the next day. And the next. Before I knew it, I was doing a daily 5+ miles and loving the endorphin rush I'd get when I pushed through that "wall." It becomes addictive.
@LaVikinga I started running to clear my head when I was stressed out. The itch grew and grew and I injured myself. While I was healing, the itch was overwhelming. Now I run because there are people who can't run but want to, and it would be a shame for me to waste my life sitting on the couch.
@Willijs3 I understand that itch! I was one of those bad runners who wouldn't, couldn't seem to wait for full recovery to hit the pavement. I'd run with the pain because I knew somewhere along my run the pain would go away. Of course, it would come back with a vengeance once I stopped. Running became an addiction.
I still feel the pull and I want to try again as the morning temperatures here in Florida ease into the 50s. My favorite times to run were about 5 in the morning, especially during autumn. The stars were out, the meteors streaked across the sky, and that moon... Those early morning runs were beautiful, especially to run back home as the night sky changed into the bruised blue, purple, & pink of dawn. sigh
At the Artillery OCS in FT. Sill, the penalty run was 8 miles (in boots with backpack) called a Jark. Since I collected a lot of demerits, I ran it a lot.
i did a 10k (~6.22 miles) in 47 and rainy this past Saturday....i agree on the mental health aspect. i started as a coping mechanism..then started to see the health benefits of it and continued. now it's a daily ritual that I have to get at least 3 miles in regardless of weather.
high school. 1991. had to run a make up mile for gym class. one other person had to do it as well. problem is, he was on the track team. not wanting to look like a complete failure, i decided to pace him. ran it in 5:40 and nearly threw up afterwards.
The run to my car in the rain.... Well actually the run to get away from people chasing me that want to beat the living daylights out of me... that one was probably 1/2 mile...
Run fer fun?
What the hell kind of fun is that?
I wasn't planning on running a mile, but the cops wouldn't stop!
I've had asthma since 1991. No running for this lady. (I regularly skate 10 to 12 miles in a practice though. )

Does the Kessel Run count?
@nadroj Depends. How many parsecs did it take you?
I don't really run very much, I get chest pains, dizziness, back pains and all of that jazz from it.
If you see me running there's probably a bear chasing me.
To the freezer when I remembered I'd forgotten a beer in there.
For poor @mfladd the longest he's run just wasn't enough
@jaremelz I will put you down!
(number 1, 167)
@mfladd 'Baby', you don't stand a chance!

My P.E. teachers in junior high and high school made sure to drill into me that running and exercise are punishments so they're not a thing I do.

A mile and a half and not a step over. USAF PT.
I walk at a pretty good clip, but no running.
Work just had a charity walk and I did the 5 miles in 45 minutes over uneven terrain.
@mcanavino I can't help but do the math here - 5 miles in 45 minutes is about 6.7 mph, are you sure you weren't running?
@jhinra Ha, nope. Just walking with purpose. Coworkers said they'd walk fast with me but couldn't keep up.
The closest I come to running these days is when I smell something burning and remember that I was cooking.
7 miles.
My daily runs were between 5 & 6.5 miles. Never tried any further because I am lazy.
I shredded my lateral meniscus a few years ago and haven't been able to bang out a decent run since then.
I miss it so much. Running was my mental health fix.

My daughter runs the 3200m competitively. I think it's safe to say she got that ability from the other side of the family.
Years ago I ran for exercise. I don't know the distance, but I would run for more than two hours sometimes. These days I mosey.

I ran a block to catch the bus the other day.
I ran a 5K in college wearing construction boots after partying until 6am. My strategy was to run a 10-minute mile then throw up at the finish line.
So in a way, I was the victorious one.

I'm pretty good at running up a tab…
The run to my car in the rain.... Well actually the run to get away from people chasing me that want to beat the living daylights out of me... that one was probably 1/2 mile...
i ran to the front door once...
