@Kyeh that tells you that he’ll wear a harness then with only a short adjustment. Maybe he’d enjoy a visit to the great outdoors on a leash? I had a cat years ago who’d quiver in excitement every time the harness and leash came out. He’d run to the door and wait. He adored going out.
@Kidsandliz I’m hesitant to get him used to that idea. Currently he’s interested in the outdoors and sits on the open screened window ledge or sliding door, but he never tries to slip out the way my previous cats did.
@Kyeh If you can do the leash thing early, it will help a lot. There’s also the harness which goes both around the front and back of the front legs. It’s supposed to be more secure. I had a troublesome cat-boy that I wanted to take out but he would even squirm out of those.
@pmarin Well, he’s 4 already, if the Humane Society guessed right. I think he’s okay being an indoor cat. I’ve thought of putting some sort of enclosure up against one of the windows, a small catio. But his giant cat tree has a good outdoor view, and the bathroom window ledge overlooks a row of plum trees that’s always full of birds and squirrels, so I think he’s well entertained.
@Kyeh Gosh maybe. Often I can’t find her (how in a 2 room apt she can hide so effectively I’ll never know) so maybe that is when she escapes to do that. I wonder where she keeps her pay. I’ll have to charge her rent now that she is working.
@cengland0 That cat has a really pretty face. Fur must be a nightmare during shedding season though unless she is soft like a rabbit as I have found that fur has less of a tendency to mat.
@Kyeh@lisaviolet@pmarin i would fail everytime. All my cats ive ever had were because somrthing was wrong with them, and more recently, because they were strays. These two i beleve the mother left them on my door. I dont know who the mother was. (There were originally 4 but neighbors took the other two.)
@Kyeh It was stupid expensive, but it is SUPPOSE to be indestructible. Fingers crossed.
He wont get any bigger, but he could gain some weight. He had some sensitive stomach issues that we had to work theough and it kept him a little underweight for a while. Finally found a diet that works for him and he is filling out nicely.
I actually did my research, I always do my research. This brand comes highly recommended. Their warranty is full replacement within 120 days. If a dog is going to destroy a bed, it will happen well before the 120 day mark. At least that is true for Charlie.
As far as their product, click the link and select “Read More +” at the top of the page. There is a lovely video that provides details on the thoughtful construction of their tough beds line.
@Kyeh@tinamarie1974 I apologize. My comment wasnt meant that way. At the shelter we get stuff the donors tell us are supposed to be dog destruction proof (per the manufacturer) and that just isn’t the case. They may last a little longer but everything gets destroyed within several months. Some dogs are faster at that than others so we try to keep the really nice stuff away from them and there are some dogs that don’t destroy anything. But what I have seen there makes me skeptical of claims like that. I was making a joke at the company’s expense and clearly it didn’t come across that way. I wasn’t attacking you for not doing research trying to find a bed he wouldn’t tear up. Even “regular” dog beds are expensive and to keep having to replace them is not what anyone wants to do. I’m sorry you felt attacked. I didn’t mean it that way. Hopefully Charlie will get to enjoy his bed a long time and you won’t be picking up stuffing.
@Kidsandliz@Kyeh thanks for the apology. Everything I have heard and read about these beds is positive. Having recieved it yesterday I can tell you the construction is top notch and very different from any other dog bed I have previously purchased.
I dont know if it will really last a lifetime like they claim, but I feel pretty confident that it will last the long haul. Time will tell.
If he destroys this bed, then maybe get him some old carpet and blankets you don’t care about and replace as needed for a while.
After he’s getting well past his adolescence and twentysomething years (2-3 years old perhaps), that “destroy the bed” behavior usually ceases or mitigates.
So you can get the luxe dog bed without so much fear that you’ll find it “modified” into tiny pieces.
The “maturity” behavioral change might not show up the same way in dogs housed in temp housing or s shelter, as those dogs often have a lot of territorial anxiety.
But just about everyone’s home dogs (those I happen to know) stopped doing that to their beds ince they grew up a bit.
@f00l he will be two next month. We estimated his birthday to be 5/18.
He does really good. The issue is when he is feeling a little, um, amorous. He starts by scratching at the corners, then he tries to gather the bed under him, you know. Then he bites down on the bit in front of his mouth as he (ahem) “pounds away”. That is how we get tears! I am working with him to stop the behavior and he does not do it nearly as often, but when in the mood…
Fit that sort of thing you might try getting a bag of those kiddie squirt guns.
Fill them w water and put them around the house. Out if his sight.
When he starts doing something destructive shoot him w the water hopefully without him seeing you do it. Esp don’t let him see the water pistol if you can avoid it.
(Tho he will figure out you are doing it)
This startles him and might often stop the conduct.
If a habit is more persistent you can let him see the water gun and shoot him in the head or face. (won’t hurt any more than being the the rain, but they mostly don’t like it)
Your vet, shelter, or rescue group might have much more info on these “break-bad-habit” techniques.
@f00l he actually has an e-collar. So depending on the day he gets a vibration that ususlly stops him. If he is really feeling it, he gets a mild shock. That stops it. He has no idea I am doing it.
@f00l@tinamarie1974 sounds like you’re doing everything right. Behavior modification is making progress and in the meantime, puppo needs a bed and you need to not be replacing it every few weeks. Sounds like a worthy investment and i hope it holds up. Who knows, maybe it’s not his “type” and he’ll leave it alone?
Got a very fine box from Target yesterday. Kota claimed it as her new bed before I even got a chance to open it.
Last weekend Nix claimed my lap as her bed. She gave me this look when I asked if I was going to be able to get up and get another cup of tea anytime soon.
@cathypike Especially since she needs her claws trimmed…and knows it. I did Kota’s last weekend. I try to get them both during afternoon nap time on the weekend but Nix was having none of it. Maybe this weekend. Might have to bribe her with some yummy squishy food.
This is Winky. It is his birthday weekend, and he is now 4 years old! He is my one and only foster fail after having fostered somewhere near 200 kittens. He had a traumatic brain injury, like me, and was very sick as a little one. We have had him since he was about 3 or 4 weeks old, and he was the only one of a litter of four to survive. I was a “dog person” and he has completely changed my way of thinking. He sleeps on this pillow above my head and my pillows. He rides up in my shoulder and is my little shadow.
@stolicat Typical - lots of soft cozy things to sleep on but she loves a broken-down box. The lovely sunny location might have something to do with it…
@mike808 This. Right? (this is one of my cats at a friend’s house - she was taking care of them while I was out of town). You can see the tip of his tail on her other side (she is completely across his tail).
Mom, Natasha (not the skinny, little pregnant cat she was last year)
Carol, with her sticker stalk catch (she brings them into the house)
Wendy at a gopher hole (they eat the gopher body, leave the head - Goose has brought me a head to throw for a fun game of fetch)

Oh, and here’s a fun photo of the side of our house. Catnip on the left, clover (for the bees) on the right. With a sweet path down the center. The cats love to play chase in that area.
@yakkoTDI I give the cats treats in the office in the morning. We close the door at night because of the Avengers (unruly wretches). They made so much noise getting into places they shouldn’t during the night, that closing the door was the best option.
So, first thing we do in the morning is open the doors to the back yard (modified fencing keeps them on our property, keeps them safe), then the door to the office. With cats waiting impatiently to get in. Not the best way to start the day, for sure. The only cats who do not come into the office for treats are Phoebe, Joey and Charlie (I hand deliver theirs). The rest, do and are all in the office at the same time. It’s not fun, but it gives me a chance to do a head count.
@lisaviolet The Avengers are so big now! It’s fun to see the older cats; I hadn’t seen them before. And wow, your yard must be cat heaven - all that catnip!!!
Awwwww - she’s very beautiful!
Toby allowed me to tie a bow around his neck! I didn’t think he would, but it didn’t seem to bother him. I think he looks very debonair.
@Kyeh did he keep it on long? And yes, very handsome
@tinamarie1974
Thanks! I only left it on him for a few minutes, but it’s good to know that I could possibly dress him up for holiday pictures!
@Kyeh Adorable!
@cf1 Thank you!
@Kyeh If you can do the leash thing early, it will help a lot. There’s also the harness which goes both around the front and back of the front legs. It’s supposed to be more secure. I had a troublesome cat-boy that I wanted to take out but he would even squirm out of those.

Because why would we want to be in a soft warm bed when there is a cold hard sink to lounge in? (this is my feral baby)
And the rest of them just now in the window (hard to be able to see them due to how bright it is outside).
@Kidsandliz Is the first one sneaking out and modeling for cat calendars? Yesterday’s cat:
@Kyeh Gosh maybe. Often I can’t find her (how in a 2 room apt she can hide so effectively I’ll never know) so maybe that is when she escapes to do that. I wonder where she keeps her pay. I’ll have to charge her rent now that she is working.
The twins.
@kcface How does your cat eat with no mouth?
@kcface Deep staring from the void(s).
@kcface @macromeh I’d guess they are fast eaters and inhales their food.
He might look cute but before he got in my lap, he tried to sit on my breakfast
I don’t own a cat because I have a bird but this one hangs around the house outside and is very cute.
@cengland0 That cat has a really pretty face. Fur must be a nightmare during shedding season though unless she is soft like a rabbit as I have found that fur has less of a tendency to mat.
Stray kitten i found at my doorstep. Hes’s a marble cat named Bobby-Cat.
@braveit1 Lucky you!
@braveit1 @Kyeh Was it in an IRK? If so, probably the best IRK deal ever.
@Kyeh @pmarin he came with his sister. Guess it was a 2 for 1 deal! Both were left on my doorstop.

@braveit1 @pmarin They’re so beautiful! Are you a known cat rescuer, like @lisaviolet?
@Kyeh @lisaviolet @pmarin i would fail everytime. All my cats ive ever had were because somrthing was wrong with them, and more recently, because they were strays. You’re in good company, with @werehatrack, @lisaviolet, and @unksol!
No cat, but I think Charlie is pretty cute. This is earlier today while he was testing out his new bed.
He is a little upset I posted him in a cat thread. Told me to let everyone know he said MEOW…
@tinamarie1974
Pretty snazzy new bed!
You could start a dog thread, too …
Is he full-grown now?
@Kyeh It was stupid expensive, but it is SUPPOSE to be indestructible. Fingers crossed.
He wont get any bigger, but he could gain some weight. He had some sensitive stomach issues that we had to work theough and it kept him a little underweight for a while. Finally found a diet that works for him and he is filling out nicely.
@tinamarie1974
He’s a very handsome fellow.
@Kyeh thanks! I swear he was posing for me.
@Kyeh @tinamarie1974 Hahaha supposed to be indestructible. Right. With dogs. Probably has a 10 day warranty. Right?
@Kidsandliz @Kyeh well that was quite the mean girl response.

Thanks @ybmuG!! Here is hoping the bed is only used for sleeping
@werehatrack She came for the spice
@ybmuG Does it turn the eyes green in cats, then?
@Kyeh hmmm…if they start out yellow…I suppose yes!
Piper is kind of an asshole, but I love her anyway.
@kostia Looks like a good kitty to me!
Got a very fine box from Target yesterday. Kota claimed it as her new bed before I even got a chance to open it.
Last weekend Nix claimed my lap as her bed. She gave me this look when I asked if I was going to be able to get up and get another cup of tea anytime soon.
@gt0163c Yikes! If looks can kill!
@gt0163c Yeah - she is telling her subject not to disturb her with the ‘if you keep this up you will be sorry’ look.
@cathypike Especially since she needs her claws trimmed…and knows it. I did Kota’s last weekend. I try to get them both during afternoon nap time on the weekend but Nix was having none of it. Maybe this weekend. Might have to bribe her with some yummy squishy food.

The foster fail sounds like a win to me! That’s a sweet story - he’s a lucky kittyboy.
@Kyeh Sounds like you are both lucky. Thanks for the story and pic.
@ChompyGator that is a wonderful story!! I love this
One of my Kitties. His name is Sam Hooker
No pets in my home right now.
My friend’s cat was ever so stressed out about 30 min ago tho.
Sparky is planning … something
and here’s Lily in her favorite cat bed
@stolicat Typical - lots of soft cozy things to sleep on but she loves a broken-down box. The lovely sunny location might have something to do with it…
@Kyeh @stolicat She’s probably been drinking. Looks like some of those bottles are empty.
@Kyeh @stolicat
Here’s Eddie & Archie, who love each other more than they love me
@moonhat Looks like they have you so well trained you can’t even use your chair either.
What about bearded dragons that identify as a cat?
@mike808 This. Right? (this is one of my cats at a friend’s house - she was taking care of them while I was out of town). You can see the tip of his tail on her other side (she is completely across his tail).
