@jchasma I got some, I was thinking about trying to freeze them before unwrapping, or maybe refrigerate first. Seems if it was cold it would come off easier.
I bought these last time and regret it. I am not joking when I say it is impossible to get the paper off these, they are absolutely fused into the candy itself. I spent a very frustrating amount of time trying and failing, and just ended up with sticky hands and paper in my mouth. I tried again to just cut the candy out with a knife, but that was also a frustrating time and it didn’t even end up actually working all that well. You would have to pay me to eat these after that miserable experience. I genuinely think they are not worth even a dollar. They candy itself is fine but not worth the frustration and the paper in your mouth ruins any good flavor.
@Nova_1231 Ditto. I tried it all, even tossing one in hot tea but the paper wouldn’t come off. Tossed the entire case. It was beyond Meh. The Asian markets have sticky candy like this with an inner wrapper made of rice paper that dissolves in your mouth.
@irenegade@Nova_1231@jchasma@sammydog01
Good times: chewing paper in dark ages grade school to make spit wads. (Old Bic pens could have the cartridge pulled out to make a pea shooter and small spit wads made good substitutes for peas.)
Seriously, on these, my go-to is to freeze them, unwrap as much paper as possible, put culprit into boiling water for very short time, and scrape remaining paper off. (You can still practice spitting the rest, if any.) Definitely a PITA, but not too bad for the rare occasions needing one. Always a bag of these in my freezer.
Getting a few more bags to round out my irk purchase rebate. They are definitely handy for settling an unruly stomach.
Funny, there is not the usual purchase of 3 limit on these! Gave up after adding 12 total and could have done more (Didn’t get but three bags
. )
@Nova_1231. Bought a 12 pack of these back in September for $24. Everything Nova 1231 says is exactly what I went through. Tossed them, life is frustrating enough, it doesn’t need help. Lesson learned, always read and believe the comments on Meh products
@Nova_1231 Never have I worked so hard to unwrap such a lousy piece of candy. Straight to the trash. Glad I only spent a buck and did not buy the case. I remember seeing and thinking I likely do not want anywhere near that amount of ginger candy.
I remove the outer wrapper then microwave for 5 seconds or so… Seems to work pretty well. Just warming them up in general makes a big difference. This is a common issue with ginger candy but other companies do a better job of wrapping – I have had this brand before and not had this issue, so I wonder if there’s just something wrong with the batches that Meh is selling.
Don’t buy these. I managed to get the wrapper off the sticky chew. I took one bite and it took the veneer off my tooth. Meh refunded my money for the chews, but they didn’t pay for my dental work
The outer wrapper comes off mostly ok, although it tends to stick on the sides a bit. The inner wrapper is completely impossible. I thought maybe it was edible (rice) paper, but nope, it’s just plain old wax paper that is permanently fused to the candy. You just have to eat the wax paper and deal with it.
The candy itself is pretty tasty with a strong ginger bite, but it’s pretty clear that these are on Meh because someone screwed up bigtime with the packaging.
I guess if rollover happens you don’t have an hour to cancel an order. Saw these for $1 at 11:59 ET, quick ordered 3, then read this thread. Clicked straight to orders and womp womp, no cancel link.
It’s only $3 so not worth anyone’s time to do anything about, just a fun fact I learned: it looks like you have an hour OR until midnight to cancel.
@djslack Huh! Good to know, thanks. I quickly ordered something thinking I’d go check the reviews and be able to cancel if they were lousy - but I guess not. Maybe I won’t check those reviews after all.
@Kyeh yep, just ordered today’s deal to see and it is placed and has the cancel link. Apparently at rollover the orders from the mehrathon go straight to processing and that’s that.
@djslack@Kyeh Unless I got an especially good case last time you can run them under hot water and peel the inside paper off pretty easily. That makes them less portable but it also keeps me from eating them by the handful.
Just tested I, took off the outer wrapper, then 10 seconds in the microwave and it comes right off. You will have to test your microwave, if it is lower or higher powered but 10 worked perfect for me.
@lehigh@sammydog01 Somewhere in the gap between incendiary puddle and tepid rock, there may be a sweet spot. And it might be reachable on a repeatable basis.
I think I did around 20 seconds, twice. (Microwave strength is a consideration – I believe mine is becoming less powerful.) The candy was soft and still a little sticky but I could pull the paper from the candy.
Got tired of screwing with these and threw them all away. Just like putting dollar bills in the trash. That’s the last time I try anything food. Irk may be cute but he has that name for a reason.
Girlfriend loves these. She just rolls them between both hands for thirty seconds or so to get the wrapper off cleanly. This only after a week of eating bits of wax paper though.
Went for the 12 pack on Sidedeal during the meh-ration. Actually had good experience with these. A friend gave me a non-defective package for Christmas and I was able to pull the wrappers off easily. Candy was soft and chewy.
I was happy to find this good deal. Now not so happy now. Not a good deal. Inner wrapper sticks. But I did find something that works. No microwave used, I don’t have one.
I carry around a few in my pants pocket during the day. If they’ve been in there for more than 15 minutes, they have softened enough that I can straighten the edges and slowly pull off the outer wrap.
Then, the tricky part, I gingerly (pun intended) pull off the inner wrapper, sometimes need to scrap some of the stuff sticking to the paper. Got most to all of the paper off and the candy is then chewy as I remember what I had from a store bought package.

These are delicious but we bought the last big pack of these and they won’t come off the wrapper.
@jchasma The dissolve in hot water thing sounds good, just pull the paper out before you drink it. I have a case from last time.
@sammydog01 genius! My husband has been eating the wrapper I’m pretty sure
@jchasma Does it count as roughage?
@jchasma @sammydog01 Unfortunately the hot water thing doesn’t work with these. Nothing works.

Fortunately these are now made with a plastic wrapper that comes off easily. Unfortunately this dollar variety from meh is not like that.
@heartny Argh, more plastic - when they could have used that edible rice paper that they put on Asian candies!
@heartny @Kyeh I think they went with the plastic becaude Murrikins don’t unnerstan edibbible ras paper. It’s some kinda plot.
Does anyone know how many you get in 1 bag?
@Lynnerizer When you try to unwrap the second one, you will conclude that the answer is “too many”.
@Lynnerizer There are 12 servings, 2 pieces per serving, so there are 24 in the bag.

@irenegade @Nova_1231 I had some Japanese milk candy with the rice paper wrapping. Really liked those a bunch.

Yes the wrapper is extremely frustrating. Not worth the bother.

I suppose I shoulda read the comments before purchasing. oh well ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Same issue like others - the wrapper doesn’t come off. And stupid me ordered too many. Those shouldn’t be sold, they are defective.
/showme ginger candy where the wrapper doesn’t come off and leaves a big mess

I hope what you bought turns out to be good!
@djslack Thanks - but if it’s not, I’m only out $7 (minus one cent.)
@djslack Seems like there ought to be a caveat about that where they say you have an hour to cancel.
@djslack @Kyeh Unless I got an especially good case last time you can run them under hot water and peel the inside paper off pretty easily. That makes them less portable but it also keeps me from eating them by the handful.

I tried the microwave option, too. Worked quite well. Yay
For the microwavers, is it soft after you zap it? My microwaving just led to softer ginger still sticking to the wrapper.
@lehigh Mine turned into a puddle. I need to do more testing.
@lehigh @sammydog01 Somewhere in the gap between incendiary puddle and tepid rock, there may be a sweet spot. And it might be reachable on a repeatable basis.
@lehigh @sammydog01 @werehatrack And that’s how science works my friend
@lehigh @sammydog01 was 4-5 seconds with my (seemingly more powerful) microwave. 10 seconds and it was a scorching hot sticky goo
I think I did around 20 seconds, twice. (Microwave strength is a consideration – I believe mine is becoming less powerful.) The candy was soft and still a little sticky but I could pull the paper from the candy.
@cf1 ok I’m going with microwave to a light tackiness… will keep experimenting. Maybe by the last chew I’ll have it solved!
@lehigh There are certainly plenty to experiment with
FFS, why would you sell these?
I don’t have a microwave. Maybe I can burn off the paper?
@raive soak it in some hot water and make a tea
@pakopako @raive Run them under hot water, the paper peels right off. Better than throwing them out anyway.
Got tired of screwing with these and threw them all away. Just like putting dollar bills in the trash. That’s the last time I try anything food. Irk may be cute but he has that name for a reason.

@rcwbbb If they stay in your pocket for an hour do they leak?
