@hammi99 My neighbor has a Yorkie, and … let’s just say it isn’t a breed I will ever consider.
My neighbor is so nice, and I don’t want to say a bad dog owner, because I think I have seen a trainer there attempting to get her attention to no avail.
I love terriers. I had a pibble. However, for some reason, my land seal could actually capture small animals and this one refuses. But boy does she love the chase and to talk about it. All day.
I want to shoot the squirrel out of the tree and have it fall on her. I don’t know what she would do.
She goes outside, and just goes bonkers after something. If there are no squirrels or bunnies, then any passing car, whatever.
If you want a dog, please go to your local shelter. No need for breeders or paying big bucks. Get a dog who looks like five different breeds and will love you for the rest of its life.
I love Rat Terriers…and Cockapoos…and Labs…and Golden Retrievers…and …
eh…Who am I kidding. I love them ALL!
I’ve never had a dog lie to me, stab me in the back, try to take my job, cheat on me, or steal my money. My heart, yes, my money…no.
I love dogs better than humans. Paws down!
ours is pretty great, other than the whining. rescue catahoula hound mix. submits to every dog, yet has a scary bark and will fuck up a stranger. will find the cat when he sneaks out. loves children.
@un4gvn1
I can’t with the flat faced breeds.
I don’t find them cute and the breathing issues seem cruel.
There’s actually a veterinary group that would Ike to ban the breeding of flat faced breeds.
I voted Lab because we’ve only ever had black Labs. The first we got from a girl who was going to college and couldn’t take him along so she put an add in the newspaper (it really was that long ago) that he was free to a good home. The second we still have, although I don’t know for how much longer… He came from a local dog breeder and was the last of his litter. Nobody wanted to buy him so the breeder gave him to us. Number 3 also came from a breeder, but as an adult; he has a hip problem that makes him unsuitable for producing show dogs so they were giving him away. I disapprove of puppy mills and wish they’d be outlawed but the dogs that don’t make the cut there have made great pets for us
I love dogs. I spent my first two years around a Great Dane. There are pictures of him carrying me around by my diaper. We had a Golden. Then a Yellow Lab. Those were my childhood dogs.
Unfortunately I lost a dog to a breakup, which really hurt. Especially because the spite was so much so she eventually gave it away never allowing me…
Years later when I found my love of my life, a two-year old pibble was part of the package. She was amazing. She lived a long happy life, with the final couple spent as a pirate with one eye. We still haven’t been able to get another.
Mostly because all of our friends use us as pet sitters. We constantly have dogs and cats in our lives, which is awesome, but I do miss having my own four-legged companion.
@f00l I am an introspective person; I have had my fair share of relationships. All but one are destined to fail. There is not one that got away or any of that nonsense, because people come and go, you change, etc. I wouldn’t want to date some of the personalities I did then now, and vice versa. I was never a saint. I am overly hard on myself, and I would probably say my partners are better off without, and hold no ill will towards them.
Then there is her. Fuck that. The canine gods sent mine on a short but heartbreaking mission to save me from that catastrophe. He went to a really rich loving home and lived a great live–and I will never believe anything other than that.
I’ve had dogs since I was five years old. My all time favorite was Erin, a female Doberman that I got as a pup. She had that alert “Don’t F with Me” look, but was obedient, super gentle and friendly. She kind of grew up with my daughter. Sadly, at 11 Erin developed a pinched nerve (vet’s best guess), lost control of her back half and had to be euthanized.
We have a chocolate lab who is the best girl in the world. I grew up with dogs but Luna was the first one for both of my girls who were both scared of big dogs before getting her. Luna is about to turn nine years old.
Seven or eight years ago my Irish wife said she wanted an Irish wolfhound. I knew someone with one and they are essentially horses. Tall enough that they can just eat off the counter while standing on all four feet. They are sweet, but massive. I made the mistake of replying to my wife’s request by kicking it down the road to future me. Saying, we can get a wolf hound when kiddo is off to college. Her last day of high school was yesterday.
I’m in a pickle. Heh.
And it’s not that I don’t want an Irish Wolfhound, but I’ve had several dogs and Iost several dogs. That sting never gets easier. Unfortunately, the rule of thumb is the bigger the dog, the shorter the lifespan. Wolfhounds can live 6-10 years but a 7 year lifespan is common. I don’t think with the speed that life is passing me by that I’m ready for that.
@capnjb My current dog is an Australian shepherd mix (~75 lbs). AFAIK he is somewhere around 14 years old (I’ve had him since my daughter’s circumstances changed and she could no longer keep him, 6 years ago). I suspect he is in his final year as his physical condition is declining. IME, big dogs do age faster than smaller ones. Tough to watch, but I am trying to make it as comfortable for him as I can.
@macromeh Those are tough times. Capture as much time as you can in the moment. I normally use way too many words around here, but I can’t seem to find many in times like these.
@tinamarie1974 Shouldn’t there be some photos in this thread? All these people talking about their “best dogs” and no pictures? Edit: @sillyheathen posted a good one.
(But the Bounty Hunter doesn’t count .)
@Kyeh Nope Just a random coincidence For a split second there was a frame or two of a white dog. She wasn’t a water dog and didn’t want anything to do with the shenanigans of the labs. And ironically enough, her name was Kyeh
@Kyeh@sillyheathen@f00l@tinamarie1974
Yes - sadly, accompanied by congenital deafness.
(But he knows several signs and manages surprisingly well, nonetheless!)
@f00l@macromeh@sillyheathen@tinamarie1974 Oh, I’ve heard of that occurring in all-white animals with blue eyes. I didn’t know that it was linked to the eyes specifically.
@f00l@Kyeh@sillyheathen@tinamarie1974
Well, he’s mostly white with blue eyes…
Here’s what Google says:
Hereditary deafness is strongly associated with the piebald (extreme white) and merle genes. Breeds frequently impacted include:
Dalmatians
English Setters
Australian Cattle Dogs (Heelers)
Bull Terriers
Australian Shepherds (*ding ding ding)
English Cocker Spaniels
Boston Terriers
@f00l@Kyeh@sillyheathen@tinamarie1974
I guess so - white with black patches - but to me he’s mutt.
When I took over his care, his name actually was Patch - seemed a little bit too common/on the nose to me. Now he’s Ash, which was still somewhat descriptive and complemented my other dog at the time, Willow.
(Fortunately, it’s easy to rename a deaf dog ).
@f00l@macromeh@sillyheathen@tinamarie1974 I know someone who has 4 kids. The oldest is James, but the other 3 are named Rowan, River, and Miles. Beautiful names, but funny as a combination! She says it was NOT deliberate; they’re not canoeists or anything. (Rowan is a tree.)
@f00l@Kyeh@macromeh@tinamarie1974 she’d have you believing that we never feed her. They’re so bloody maltreated. Homemade dog food, so many treats, an acre to run around on whenever they want. We even have a duvet we put on the bed on certain evenings so they can hang out with us before bedtime. Willow was spooning June last night.
Australian Shepard is by far the best! Closely followed by Border Collies.
@amazedblue
What in the illiteracy is a shepard?
@amazedblue @xjoex One notable one I remember respectfully:

I’d agree, aussies are great
@lonocat YES!!!
@lonocat I went through my dog breed book, but it wasn’t listed, so I’m stumped.
Must be a mutt, right?

@MrGoodGuy IMHO, mostly overhyped, more bark. than bite, prancing at the AKC show.

I adopted a Neapolitan Mastiff mix and Anatolian Shepherd mix.
