Thanksgoatmas aka: Blame @djslack for stuff(ing) - November 2017 Scapegoat
16Congratulations @djslack! You’ve been thrown into the pit… I mean honored with goatdom!
It seems your fellow forum fiends find you far too helpful.
“It other words, let’s knock him down a peg or two. His elevated game is making the rest of us slackers look bad.”
So get ready for a month of being basted in blame like butter on a turkey.

Dammit.
Since I’ve been nominated by a subset of my peers for this honor(?), I will attempt to perform my goatly duties in an appropriately mediocre manner.
My heart kind of sank when I posted a comment a second ago and saw the goat icon. I hope my Gmail account is ready.
Thanks y’all. I think.
/giphy mediocre goat
@giphy: what. the. fuck?
That is neither of those two words.
Starting this off with a bang!
PS I usually stay out of these threads, so I’m not that well versed in how things go in here. Here goes nothing.
I blame @djslack that giphy is effed in the noggin.
@djslack fyi that gif is a bear not a goat. I blame you goat for this.
Wow @thumperchick! That was fast!
Got my last one in on @Riotdemon just in time.
@djslack I blame you.
@f00l
/giphy fast goat
@djslack You’re welcome!
@thumperchick I think this’s the fastest transfer of dooty I’ve ever seen, almost made it on Eastern time.
@2many2no I’ve been faster, TBH. I think you all just noticed this time because I was a bit late on the Sept/Oct transfer.
@Thumperchick
Sometimes it’s fun when you’re kinda late.
Then the overdue-to-escape-Goatdom-victim gets to moan about it for a few days while the should-be-Goat chortles.
@OldCatLady?
(who had to endure with grace, and
did)
@ignorant?
(who lazed thru the entirety of Oct 2016, and who still owes us.)
Welcome to the club, fucker.
I ordered a 10-pack of some turnbuckles that was fulfilled by Amazon. Only one came. Blame, because 10% of “fulfilled by Amazon” rounds to “fu”.
I also haven’t ordered a new catshirt in almost two whole days now.
@narfcake
/giphy turnbuckle fail
What would you do with ten of them anyway?
@djslack Tensioning some steel cables for a project.
@djslack Turnbuckle, turtle… ya, I can see the confusion, giphy. Not.
I think the good folks at giphy need to spend some time tweaking their algorithms.
@narfcake Apparently, you’re onesioning some steel cables, now.
@Thumperchick Ha! Ripper!
@Thumperchick OK, that’s so good, it’s bad!

@djslack Prepare for blame later, though. I’m finally going to open my BOC from 2 weeks ago.
Dammit, @djslack! The BOC was NOT disappointing as advertised!

@narfcake Good haul. Better than a fuko by a long shot.
@Kidsandliz Yeah, the last few rounds of fuko reveals haven’t given me much of a desire to chase them anymore.
I blame you @djslack that I just got the box of nail stuff in the mail today for @narfcake. She is no longer goat so can not be blamed for her own late nail plate
@CaptAmehrican riotdemon not narfcake ugh i am in idiot mode today
@CaptAmehrican I was about to say “I haven’t mailed anything out recently.” …
@CaptAmehrican But I wanted to see @narfcake with nail polish.
@CaptAmehrican My daughter did her nails with the zombie plates.
@CaptAmehrican and that slip would also be @djslack’s fault. And it is also @djslack’s fault that you forgot the second blame.

This ad showed up in the sidebar of ESPN. I was looking at my fantasy teams. It was fantasy football, computer, not this type of thing. I’m not a dirty girl, why did you do this? (OK maybe a little dirty.)
And now it’s done this. WTF Google.
@sammydog01 Ack! And double ack!!

In any case, it’s a blame. Probably more.

@sammydog01 I found them on fleabay when I was looking for that damn banana wine stopper. Bought 4 dozen. I think they’ll make a great cheese platter for a Thanksgiving w/family or an Xmas party.

@sammydog01 Try an ad blocker. Out of sight, Out of mind. Also a web page loads faster.
@sammydog01 @rtjhnstn and you’ll have made your computer more secure and made the battery last longer if you’re on a laptop.
But I say leave the ads and continue posting them here.
… those are some good headphones. I have their open brothers, the DT-880.
Huh wait, 1770. I was thinking of the much cheaper (older?) 770. Eh. I like open headphones better anyways.
@djslack it is your fault I am tired today and don’t want to be at work (and it isn’t even your unblame I have a temp job - that happened on my goat watch). And I have an office where there is no place to sit (or nap for that matter) where you can’t be seen from anyone who looks through the window. And we aren’t allowed to cover up the window.
@Kidsandliz
/giphy hyper goat says have some coffee
@djslack don’t like coffee : )
@djslack and I am tired today too. And the fact that the weekend is coming up still won’t give me a chance to catch up on my sleep.
@djslack A double blame: I just got called in to come into work 2 hours early (part 1) because my coworker’s 8-month-old daughter is in the hospital in Des Moines (part 2).
@msklzannie
/giphy goat is sorry to hear that
Ya, totally @djslack’s fault that my ass has been chewed so many times today I’m thinking about changing my name to Bubblegum.
At least 14 calls from various community personalities upset about an error my people made in a recently distributed publication. I’m beside myself about it, but once tens of thousands of copies of printed material is out in the wild it’s not like I can somehow recall it.
Dammit @djslack, now I gotta crack the whip. And I don’t like to crack the whip.

/image LookCuter shirts
CuteOfTheMonth and AngryBaby seem to be falling on the wayside too, what with UnstableUnicorns being his current project.

Continuation of Leaphorn & Chee Series
In 2013, Hillerman’s daughter, Anne, published the first new novel since 2006 featuring Hillerman’s Navajo Police characters,
Spider Woman’s Daughter
(ISBN 0062270486); the novel’s protagonist is Jim Chee’s wife, Officer Bernadette Manuelito. Her second book
Rock With Wings
(ISBN 0062270516) was released in 2015.
Song of the Lion
(ISBN 0062391909), her third book, was released in 2017.
@f00l I have read that series (well except any that have some out in the last couple of years).
@Kidsandliz
Hillerman was a journalist and member of the “greatest generation”.
During his war service in the Pacific, he encountered the mystery novels of Arthur Upfield.
Upfield’s protagonist is an Aboriginal law-enforcement officer in Australia, who grew up in the bush, and who can see the world simultaneously through Western eyes and through traditional Aboriginal perspectives, which enables him to see information and solve enigmas difficult for a strictly European POV to envision.
After Hillerman moved to Albuquerque and began to learn far more about the culture of the local Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, Apache, and Ute, he decided to try to bring a few fictional Navajo law-enforcement characters (who carry multiple cultural perspectives in their daily lives) into being, hoping to make these characters realistic to Navajo and other native eyes.
According to many readers, he succeeded. He was repeatedly honored by the Navajo.
The landscape of the Sourhwest, esp the Four Corners area, is perhaps the most important character. It has a subtle voice in the books.
The books are not anything pretentious. They are simple mysteries, often nothing big as mysteries, per se. The value of the books is the value of being at home in that world.
When I think of his books, I think of the bare landscapes on which so many years of history can be read, the 100+ mile vistas (if one is up high), the sparse water, the wind.
He died close to a decade ago. His daughter Anne has continued the series with the recent books.
@f00l My sister, the English major, introduced me to Hillerman. I love my sister.
@therealjrn
When I read one of his books, I just wanna drop out of my life and move to northern NM or AZ.
@f00l Have you read the Longmire books? Same with Wyoming.
@sammydog01
I had not heard of them.
Much thx.
@sammydog01 I like the TV series.
/a lot
@therealjrn Me too. Is it over yet? I’m gonna get Netflix for a month and binge the new ones when they’re all out. I watched it on A&E.
@sammydog01 “new” ones? :perk:
@therealjrn Just checked- last season (7) starts Nov 17. I haven’t seen any since season 3. Looks like Netflix for spring for me.
@therealjrn
@sammydog01
A TV series? Had been avoiding TV mostly for the last decade or so, did not know.
Thx!
@sammydog01
@therealjrn
Re imitators: I know that “native culture” mystery series, and “set in small distinct community mystery series” became a “thing” in the last 2-3 decades; in part, propelled by the quality and success of the Hillerman books.
I’ve heard of, but not read, several Native American mystery series written by others, never known if they were actually decent-to-good.
They don’t have to be great for me to enjoy them. Just, say, at least decent-to-good. I enjoy series like that, use them to take a break from other obsessions.
So the Longmire series: Please tell me that it is at least decent-to-good.
'Cause if so, I want.
Re the Arthur Upfield Aboriginal mysteries:.
There are a lot of them. Almost 30? Upfield published from 1928 to around his death in 1964.
Some if them, the earlier ones, contain some racial attitudes held by all the characters (including Aboriginal characters) that would have seemed generally ridiculous by the 1950’s.
To me, these expressed attitudes seems to come off more as “stereotypes widely held at the time” rather than as “intent to demean”. People’s judgments on this may not match mine, of course. It seemed to me that Upfield clearly did not intend to demean his Aboriginal protagonist,
These attitudes don’t dominated the books. I have read perhaps 1/4 of the books? 2-3 decades ago? I found the books well worth the read in any case.
I wouldn’t want to read all of them at once. Too many of them. And writers tended to be less concerned then with giving their entire series a story and character arc than is common now.
My pref would be: a few at a time, then a good break, then a few more. I still intend to do them all someday.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bony_(character)
One of Upfield’s novels described a murder MO so effective that it didn’t leave much trace of evidence, at least by the standard of the time (assuming the criminal was competent at life in the Outback).
Upfield was working as a fence-rudder for the “rabbit-proof fence” at the time. Someone who had heard Upfield try to work out the plot and methods of the fictional crime actually used it to commit murder and concealment.
The criminal was never charged for several murders, tho he was the last person known to be with the victims; there was simply zero evidence. The likely murderer of the first two vanished men was later convicted and hanged based on a subsequent, similar murder committed with far less care. In this latter case, there was physical evidence, and the convicted murderer had cashed the victim’s check.
From Wikipedia on Upfield:
Also:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Murchison_Murders
Hillerman also wrote several mysteries/thrillers that were not part of his Navajo series. And several non-fiction books about NM and the American SW. All those are also worthy.
@JasonToon
Have you started reading any Upfield mysteries, now that you are in that neighborhood? What do you think or hear about them?
@f00l Interesting. I may have to check that out. I read a novel about people who had been transported to Australia called “The Secret River” that was pretty good if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
I have read several of the Longmire mysteries and like them. They make good audiobooks too.
Not a blame for the goat, but there’s some definite schadenfreude involved when a truck driver is racing a red light and totally ignorant of their vehicle’s size.
FWIW, the street is a 25 mph zone.
http://11foot8.com/
@narfcake I am surprised that that bridge is still standing and safe.
@Kidsandliz There’s a bar they put up to protect it. The trucks are hitting it, not the bridge.
@therealjrn Yeah but if the bar is attached to the bridge…
@Kidsandliz Is it?
@narfcake Wow, one a month. Impressive.
@therealjrn I have no idea. I’d hope not but then I have learned never to underestimate the stupidity of people…
@Kidsandliz @therealjrn The crash beam is sacrificial and not attached to the bridge. It appears to be the very same type of heavy steel channel that’s found in high rise construction.
And trucks have managed to bend it before.
@narfcake “Sacrificial Crash Beam” is the name of my new band!
@sammydog01 There was a two-fer in one morning before.
Yesterday I dropped my phone while getting out of the car on my way out of town and smashed the screen to bits. I have insurance, but the deductible is $149 for a nearly two year old phone. I could pay off $140 and upgrade instead. Dammit @djslack.
The insurance place has a chance of offering screen replacement for $30, so that’s my hope. But I won’t be able to get that until Monday at the earliest. Also their claims process has become torturous. Dammit @djslack.
Went to the Verizon store and asked if they had a cheap Android I could buy as a backup. The cheapest was over $200. They said if I bought a prepaid phone it will require a month of service before I could put my sim in and activate it. They get you coming and going. Dammit @djslack.
Went to Target and bought a TracFone flip phone for $20. They had an Android for $50 but I thought it may have a chance of being locked. The flip phone activated on my sim just fine but wow does it suck. Texting is terrible and my wife says it sounds like I’m in a cave when I talk to her. At least I am not incommunicado, but dammit @djslack.
@djslack probably you could blame an emeritus goat for that… Sorry for your bad luck.
I blame the goat because a friend of mine bailed on me for tonight. So nobody to go to the fancy cocktail bar with.
@CaptAmehrican And here you are with an extra hour later! I say, go to the fancy schmancy cocktail bar. Hook up with some rich Arab, then in the morning you’ll still have the goat to blame!

I haven’t decided whether this find earlier is a blame or an unblame yet.
@narfcake Good grief where the heck do you buy shirts? I mean I know it is a used clothing store but is it where meh and woot employees dump theirs? Or someone who has more money than sense and so gets carried away with buying cat and meh sirts (oh wait you get carried away too LOL)? Clearly you need to meet up with whomever is the donor of all this junk. Looks like you have something in common - like being part of the same
foodvalue chain.@Kidsandliz The latter. The US economy thrives on these irresponsible spending habits that makes new items become thrift store treasures for folks like me.
That’s not to say that former employees haven’t dumped their old shirts at a thrift store before, but I’m not about to visit the thrift stores in and around Carrollton or Seattle to find out.
@narfcake No- you have your gold mine right where you are. Now you know one is a mehite. Perhaps a new best bud? Cat shirts and meh shirts. What more could you want? LOL
@Kidsandliz Well I do wear shirts without cats from time to time too. Like yesterday. Or right now.
/image TeeTurtle need more coffee
@narfcake That’s because you are too coffee deprived to tell the difference between a cat and a squirrel.
@Kidsandliz That seems plausible.

@f00l

unblame the new Trash Wheel is officially Captain Trash Wheel
@CaptAmehrican Cool. That is the name I voted for.
Your fault I am STILL not done with the fucking grading. And two groups got less than 30/100 because they did not even do most of the assignment. And they think they are graduating in December. Not at this rate. I was forced (ordered) to give them another chance as I am expected to pass the lot of them so they will graduate (state funding tied to that). Stupid as all that does is result in the “folly of rewarding for B while expecting A”. Over my dead body will they pass without doing passing work so they get to do it over and over until they do. Sheesh.
They think they are done because graduation is in a month and a half. Well not if they don’t pass this class (capstone) it isn’t. I read a bunch of them the riot act last week (some I had to chase down to do so) so now at least more of them are coming to class again (handicap that it is at 8am), but I think they are hoping finished assignments will rain out of the sky. Yeah. Like money does. Good luck with that. Good thing I am a temp.
And a roach just fell on me (I am lying on my bed) from the wall. Gross. I killed it with a shoe which pissed off a cat who thought it was a new toy. Not in my bedroom.
And the 6 or so week old feral kittens I haven’t seen since the nearly freeze we got a couple of days ago. Before I’d see them daily - any time I was around the apt. I hope they are OK. I need to ask the guy who is feeding their mama if he has seen them.

Voted Tuesday afternoon since I was passing my polling place (otherwise would have gone later on in the day).
Tuesday evening, I was out, and the person I was with had their phone ringing every few minutes with a different automated tape.
Made me glad not to have a landline.
I blame you though since the constant ringing was irritating.
On the other hand, one of my closest “friends” became a parent for the first time, so I’ve been spending some time looking for a gift for them, and that has put me in a good mood.

Don’t forget the rain.
It’s cold and wet.
I don’t mind being wet, but not when I’m cold.
@f00l and it will probably be unseasonably warm when those generic snuggies en Espanol arrive.
/giphy cold front
@mflassy
Real live people survive in the south, in spite of gators, hurricanes, mosquitos, iced tea, southern accents, and many other challenges.
Cold fronts in the South can often be no worse than 50F.
OTOH I blame djslack for your rainy cold.
@f00l I thought iced tea didn’t exist there… only sweet tea.
@f00l
I’m part of the southern populace which flirts with the idea of discontentment with the South.
Otoh, living in Fort Worth does have its perks…
@msklzannie sweet tea had better be iced, and it is not a challenge to life in the South, but rather a benefit.
@djslack I’m in complete agreement with you regarding tea; i’m sure @f00l figured that everyone would understand iced tea is sweet without having to have said it.
@mflassy
So how many gallons of iced tea you drink a week?
And how many sports teams (any level) within, say 200 miles of your current residence are called the Gators?
And is your current residence within a state whose state borders are as close as, say, 600-700 or so miles of the Gulf Of Mexico?
Ali if the South fortress with discontentment with the South.
Parcel to the history and heritage. Comes in many flavors.
Not everytime will publicly about to it, tho. And artful honesty and artful polite deception both flourish here.
Sometimes also, rudeness, and impolite honesty and impolite deception. Though those are frowned upon.
All in particularly Southern varieties.
@msklzannie
There are some places with only sweet tea. I think that’s common around the Carolinas, but not sure.
Iced tea, with choice of sweetened or unsweetened, in commonplace in the areas I’ve frequented.
@f00l it’s a secret test to pick out the pretenders amongst the Southerners.
@f00l
Inevitable corrections:

Sigh.
I’m sure I missed some.
@f00l
I’ll answer those questions on the day that the East Coast unanimously agrees that they’re not better than the West Coast.
@djslack or the ones with diabetes
@mflassy
In other words, NEVER.
But I don’t expect you or anyone to take responsibility for the conduct of the entire East Coat.
BTW, if you really want an excuse not to own up for the duration of the history of our species, try waiting until the East and West Coasts publicly admit to, and act as if, they’re not better than “Flyover Country”.
@f00l
There are numerous reasons I would never take responsibility for the East Coast.
They don’t deserve my representation.
I can’t take responsibility for people I’ve never met.
Even if I would have met every person on the East Coast, I can’t influence their actions.
I don’t even take responsibility for the actions of people I do know.
@djslack
@f00l is OK with other people drinking sweet tea. @f00l is not ok with @f00l drinking sweet tea.
/giphy ugh
@f00l does not.
@f00l drinks other things than iced tea when @f00l is offered only sweet tea.
Mint tea is great though. Unsweetened, for me.
Still haven’t seen the baby feral kittens… As their mama is still around I am guessing they died of hypothermia. Sad.
Found one of the babies - the gray and white one. Dead and been dead for a while in the “tunnel” where they usually hung out most of the time. Haven’t seen the calico or yellow kitten and I am afraid that is their fate too.
@Kidsandliz Sorry. All cat deaths are hard, kitten deaths are hard and sad.
@OldCatLady We had caught one and it calmed down in around a day and has a home. The calico was getting brave and the gray one almost as brave with respect to wanting to check us out. Yellow baby was still the first to dash into the tunnel. Had it not gotten wet and cold likely we would have saved those two as well.
@Kidsandliz Thanks for the rescue, and the update. One unblame for goat @djslack.
@OldCatLady For some reason the death of those babies just makes me so sad. They were such curious little things, popping up to check out the world, playing with each other in their kitten ways, I wish I had taken a photo of them curled up and sleeping in the hollowed out root of a tree that had been cut down. I managed to pet the gray on his back since s/he was closest to the way out. I’d never make it as vet as I’d not be able to put animals down. It is hard enough to do it with my own cats over the years (and it is coming up sooner than I’ prefer with my three oldest ones - all 16.5 with health issues) let alone if I’d have to do it over and over again as part of my job.

Coldish. Very rainy.
The rain is great, long term, we need it, theorectically I’m glad, yada yada;
but I’m in a short-term mood at the moment.
And it’s fucking cold and rainy.
I blame you.

I blame you for my self-centered and selfish attitude.

Been looking at the Asus Flip C302.
I’ve found it for roughly $400 on eBay, and a bit loweron Craigslist.
I blame you though because I found it for $250 on Craigslist, but I’m not about to commute from Texas to Detroit for the sake of saving $150.

Outta show well under $400 then. Was last summer once in a while.
Was even at that price open box at normal retailers sometimes last summer. Don’t remember where tho.
Yeah I wouldn’t either.
I’m not exactly that good at looking for the best deals for expensive electronics.
In addition, ideally I wouldn’t buy the C302 until trying it out in a store, but I couldn’t find a store with this model available to play around with.

@Thumperchick @Shrdlu @djslack @narfcake @kidsandliz @f00l @therealjm
Thank you.
We knew this was coming. Not the individual losses, but as a group.
And with so many over fifteen years of age…
At our high point we had thirty-eight cats. Yeppers, thirty-eight. Three dozen, plus two. When I came online, August 1, 1996, it was asking how to get our latest cat, cat number seventeen, out of the rafters. He was a feral we tricked into going into the garage so we could keep him safe from coyotes. He lived up there for a year. I climbed a ladder to feed and water him, as well as clean his litter box. Fun times. And the count went up from there.
People would ask how many we have. “More than you have fingers and toes” was usually my answer.
Now, the population is lower than it’s been since then. We have seventeen. We’re not taking in any more. We’ve been asked to, but declined. Kittens might outlive us and we have enough seniors.
Someday, it would be nice to just be able to go someplace and not worry about the cats. Not that we will, it would just be nice to have that option.
We weren’t blessed with human children, so the cats have been our family all of these years.
Once again, thank you all.
@lisaviolet
I love how you have chosen to be with kitties. Tall order, dealing with so many and making it work out.
I bet both you human kitties have been rewarded now and then.
OK so @djslack several complaints here… very, very minor compared to what just happened to lisaviolet but none the less they fall under your job description…
Explain to me why it seems like grading resembles laundry, yard work, dirty dishes, house cleaning… the task that never ends… and thus on the weekends I still have to work despite working 5 days a week otherwise. And work is where I fucking am because…
Earlier this week, out of the blue, my mac laptop no longer can log into school email or blackboard from home (I have to go through the school’s website to get there) but my mac can log into them from work wireless. The internet people came yesterday and told me it wasn’t their problem. The school told me it wasn’t their problem… Since I can reach those sites while at work using work’s wireless I think my home’s internet is the issue. Those are the only sites I can’t reach, no other problems (well other than you can’t get more than 20mbps in this town and if you are lucky it will actually be running that, also it is extremely expensive here). So now I can’t work at home for many things. Adding to the fuck count!!
I got sucked in to temporarily taking care of a homeless family’s 4 cats (after talking a no kill shelter into taking them - that included begging and pleading as they were full and promising a donation out of my pocket). And all of them have issues (they are 4-6 years old). I got an estimate from a vet and I found out that together they need about $1500 or so in vet care (not counting using up all my remaining flea stuff on them which is around $55 worth of stuff) that I do not have. Nice cats - well loved, friendly, sweet - but OMG I wasn’t planning on this level of expense. My own need a fair bit of vet care - in fact was there this morning with one of my 16.5 year olds (I have 3 that age all with health problems, and a healthy almost 7 year old) - that man wasn’t very good so with the next vet visit I will try someone else in that practice (already been warned away from the other 2 one vet practices in town). I can’t even give them back as those folks left town looking for work.
And the fucking itty bitty grocery stores here don’t have most of the brands I buy, sales tax on food is approaching 10% and all the medical specialists are 95 miles away. There isn’t even an urgent care or ER in this town. Nearest one of those is 50 miles away. Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for this temp job and it looks like odds are high I might have it one more term, but I do. not. like. this. town. one. bit. And I just ate up the last of the “good stuff I can’t get here” that I brought home in a cooler from where I used to live (177 miles away).
And my aunt’s memorial service was today and I couldn’t go as I couldn’t even come close to affording it (1400 miles away from here and at both ends the out of the way you can’t get there from here airports not even close to where I needed to be or where I live) and I really wanted to go. They couldn’t skype it as no internet in country church.
Done bitching.
Deal with it GoaT
@Kidsandliz
Someone almost certainly changed the security setup at work.
You prob need a VPN connection now.
Whoever told you differently likely gave you bad info.
@f00l I will call tech support on Monday and ask them about that. They only work 9-4:30 M-F. Thanks for the suggestion. What was weird was the internet company’s repair person used a PC off of my wireless and came up with the log in page and the log in page he arrived at had a different address than the one I arrived at when I clicked on the same link off the school’s home page. As a result he blamed my mac. Nope nope nope Mac works at work.
So how does one set up a VPN connection and are they free?
@Kidsandliz
You’ll need to talk to your school tech Dept, when the informed persons are there, to sort this out.
You might even go in and accost them in their building on Monday. Get some real attention from them.
I doubt a $ cost to you. Certainly hope not.
If they have a decent IT Dept, the whole mess should be more secure now.
Middle of term is a weird time to do this tho. So who knows what’s going on. Perhaps they had an “incident”.
Or perhaps something got misconfigured. Or perhaps there was a problem with the block of ip’s assigned by your home internet provider to you. Or some other weird routing prob.
Who knows.
Wait till Monday, if that’s when the high quality assistance is to be had.
@f00l that is when the only assistance is to be had. Nothing else around here is competently run. I doubt this is either.
@Kidsandliz
If you are at a college or U, someone there has smarts.
Even if you can’t get them right now.
@f00l Nope unlikely. Open admissions, 50% considered passing, pay across the board around the lowest in the nation, hires people because they are desperate, many failed searches. No one in HR, for example has any background in that at all. No one in IT familiar with Mac’s (apparently only 3 at the entire university and they are all over in art, guy assigned to them has never used one), windows XP in some classrooms…
@Kidsandliz
I don’t quite entirely buy this?
Of course I am talking thru my hat here. No knowledged. It’s possible, of course.
But I believe someone there likely has smarts.
You find them everywhere. These folk with smarts. Or this is my philosophy.
@Kidsandliz
/giphy explaining is not in my job description
/giphy clear your cookies and your cache
/giphy you’re too nice
@f00l Well I will see what happens on Monday. Fingers crossed.
@f00l somehow TCP port 443 was no longer activated on my router. OMG though the convoluted way I found this out (after trying clear cache, cookies, reset whatchamacallit - pram or something?, and a ton of googling)
Called apple, they figured out what port I needed activate, tried to activate it, failed. Dealt with TP-link then. Um China. Who expected Americans to act Chinese when the American actually expected them to know what they were doing so blindly followed directions. That did not end well. They cleverly removed my ability to connect to the internet at all, including via ethernet, had no idea what they had done to then tell me how to undo it. Finally got through to a supervisor who managed to fix it (took a while though as I think he was googling their own help manual as we tried things as the kid who originally tried had no idea what he had done to make the mess to begin with and so wasn’t sure how to undo it). That was an epic 4+ hours that ended at 3:15am. China called me back. Very odd to see Shenhen, Guangdong, China on your caller ID.
All works for now and I wrote down how everything needs to be set and how to find what I need to fix it myself next time. Of course next time it will likely be a different kind of problem.
So we got to see Alton Brown live in the Eat Your Science show a few days ago. It was awesome! But at the end, one of the last questions he answered was about stuffing vs dressing.
Now in his earliest Romancing the Bird episode of Good Eats, he was quite insistent that stuffing is evil and will get you sick if you stuff the bird. In a later episode, after receiving a lot of protest, he finally did a show on how to do stuffing in a non-evil fashion. Huzzah! Dressing is good, but the dressing stuffed into and cooked with the bird is divine! There’s no comparison!
But at the show he was back to stuffing is evil. And my wife (who does the turkey; I do a lot of the sides) decided to once again NOT stuff our Thanksgiving turkey.
Well… it was supposed to be Thanksgiving. Now its just going to be turkey Thursday with deviled eggs.
And its all your fault, @djslack
@duodec We were supposed to be in Little Rock to see him tonight, but circumstances happened in such a way that we are not there.
Stuffing, dressing, both are good in my book. But if you’re going to let a person dictate how you cook and eat, you’ve at least picked a good one.
/giphy turkey stuffing
@djslack You live in Arkansas?
@Kidsandliz Nope. But not too far. Louisiana.

On the up side, I could resell it at a decent profit if I don’t like it or want a different Chromebook…
@mflassy welcome to the Chromebook world. It’s lovely over here.

@mflassy interesting!
I’m still waiting on official Android app support for my Chromebook 2.
@djslack
FWIW. IMHO (Uneducated).
I have the play store on my Google pixel Chromebook 2015. Really overrated for the moment, last time I messed with it.
PITA. Nor well behaved. Eats the processor alive.
At that time, I would have rather run chrome with 6000 tabs open than run Chrome with 10 tabs and also open a few playstore apps, in a Chromebook.
Same experience on an Asus Flip c302a.
I haven’t booted the lovable thing (the pixel Chromebook) since late summer. Perhaps they’ve patched ChromeOS and fixed it up a little, a couple of times, since then.
@mflassy
Congrats.
The Plus supposedly runs the playstore much better than the Pro for some reason I don’t understand, in spite of the plus processor, which one might wish were a better one.
Great price.
The Plus has the stylus interface, doesn’t it?
@f00l
Yes, it has a stylus.
Ideally though, I would have gotten the C302A.
I found a listing on eBay. After making an offer and getting rejected, I discovered that it was the UK model with 6GB RAM.
@mflassy
I thought the stylus interface was deemed a total winner?
@f00l
Correction. The UK model was 8GB RAM.
@f00l surely there’s someone you could blame for this poor performance, yet you chose not to. I blame me for that.
I have one app that would make my Chromebook 10x more useful than it is to me right now. Hopefully it will run at least tolerably well when that functionality arrives.

1st: blame because I can’t get rid of my cough even after prednisone (wheezes but no crackles); unblame because tonight I found 3 bags of cough drops I bought last winter which I can no longer get in-store.
2nd: blame because I still haven’t figured out how to put in a zipper in minky fabric for a pillow cover so I just gave up on that part of the plan; unblame because I finished the 3 pillows I was making even without the covers being removable.
