@Num1Zero, you can always stick some cards on the cage like some of us stuck cards around our bicycle wheels just to make a weird noise. That’ll provide plenty of loud sound so you can sleep like a baby.
One can save a heck of a lot of money by being an active procrastinator. You wait long enough, and the item sells out, and you save the entire purchase price. What a deal!
@Lynnerizer Eh, Vornado makes a decent fan, but the name is just hype IMO. The only one I have direct experience with was a disappointment, but it was represented as imperfect.
@Lynnerizer Because they really circulate the air very well. The 5 year warranty. Made in USA (of US and imported parts) The proof is in the cat hair. I also bought one of their Whole Room Vortex Heaters here end of 2016. Excellent heat distribution and circulation,and still works perfectly. Their products are not cheap,but a great example of getting what you pay for. Maybe we will see a Vornado product here near the end of summer.
@detailer@Lynnerizer I bought two Vornado heat fans at Bed Bath Beyond, using their 20% off coupon - so not too costly. They are quiet and quick to supplement heat my 800 square foot Dance Studio, which otherwise takes too long in the winter with just the thermostat heater. Now I discovered they have a “Fan Only” button, so I’m using them in the summer too to spread the air-conditioned air.
@mcanavino@phendrick, it may, or it may not be on anywhere. I simply made that sarcastic remark because of what ya posted about the Horizonal & Vertical.
As the weather’s been getting warmer, I realized (as I do every July) that I needed a new fan for my office that wouldn’t sit on and transmit vibrations into my desk, so…
@thevorlon, the 3.6’ is a tad over 42" which is still not that high, or tall, but you’re right,… the 3.93" is not even 4 inches tall, or short!! Even I’m taller than that!!
@thevorlon Sounds like you can either see the shiny metal at the base, or lower it to cover the “chrome”.
Either that or you get an extra 4 inches of shiny chrome in the raised position.
@1DisabledWarVet Look at it again. The quoted text was (Adjustable Height: 3.6’ - 3.93’) or, 43.2 inches - 47.16 inches. This time marked with parenthesis instead of quotes. I hope you are taller that even that.
@thevorlon, ok, my bad! I do not bode well after 3:30ish AM on any subject, no matter how wasted, or sleepy I be!! BTW, they removed those freaking parentheses just ta make us look dumber than we are! Anyway, irregardless, I’m is ah fn kollege stewdint! ,
Put it together quickly.
Incredibly the bugs outside are louder than the fan 10 feet away from me on speed 9.
Nice air movement.
Turn it up to turbo for that traditional fan sound and a blast of air movement.
Here’s a really silly question: I see that has the 7-segmented display on the front to tell you the speed. Do you think that light is very bright if you intend on having this in a bedroom at night?
@patentdude Taotronics got booted from AMZ because of fake reviews, but some of their stuff is apparently fairly decent. If they had played nice, they’d probably still be around there, and most likely have a reasonable reputation. Amazon certainly has tons of shady types shipping loads of crap everyday, despite mixed reviews.
@patentdude hi there! Yes, each the buyer and one of our photographers reviewed this exact fan and each stated it is really nice and quiet for how powerful it is.
The kitchen at our (nonprofit) camp for kids with type 1 diabetes is about 308 kelvins by July. Sure we have fans but never enough. I’m in for two. Feeling charitable? Camp Nejeda 910 Saddleback Rd Stillwater NJ 07875
I already have 7 fans in the house. They only have 4 speeds, and can’t wiggle around or point in different directions, but they’re extremely effective. They are all attached to the ceiling…
Attn: Anyone still wanting one of these fans and wants to order from the Taotronics.com web site.
I finally decided to register mine. I went to their site and clicked on their Register button and it was an inactive link.
When I tried the orangeish circular logo bottom left for FAQs, I got this popup:

There is no need to manually register your product. All products purchased from authorized sellers come with a default warranty according to our warranty policy.

They also have a random try-your-luck discount available for giving them your email address, which might be better – I didn’t try it to find out how much.
Nice & quiet. Not really that strong, but good for a smaller area. Only complaint is that lousy led “0” that won’t go off unless you unplug the thing or just leave it on the lowest speed.
@mellowirishgent No mention of “chargeable”. Just DC, which implies rhat there is a power brick - but the “what’s included” doesn’t mention one. I’m guessing that the power brick is internal. If it were cordless, the battery and charger would run the price up a bunch.
I’m more interested in smart plug compatibility; if the speed control electronically defaults to ‘off’ when the power is connected, then it’s not.
@mellowirishgent@werehatrack yeah, not sure it makes sense to put a “brushless DC motor” in a device that plugs into the wall. That would require converting the AC to DC, then back to pulsed power. Not very efficient. Seems more likely to be a regular AC motor (which are brushless by default).
@fibrs86 Pulsed DC motors tend to produce less waste heat than speed-controlled AC motors, and in particular, brushless DC motors do not inherently hum, which nearly all AC motors inescapably do.
@werehatrack yes, 9 speeds is easier and more efficient with DC than AC. The ~20% loss in the rectifier is the trade off for more than 3 speeds.
Also nice for people bothered by the 60Hz hum.
WE’RE SOLD OUT EXCEPT FOR A SMALL AMOUNT WE SET ASIDE FOR EXISTING VMP MEMBERS TO BE RELEASED AT 4PM ET
How do I know if I’m an existing VMP member? I’m not questioning the VMP part, but the existing part.
I think I think, so according to Descartes, I think I exist. I think.
But according to Sartre, my existence is absurd.
And I have been feeling more than just a little bit absurd lately.
The first part of Philosophy 101 always covers logic, then they teach a lot of philosophy that does not seem to be that logical. At least irrational numbers are mostly rational.
I’ll guess I’ll just be confused until 1600 EDT, then I’ll see if I exist by whether it lets me order. (Unless I’m asleep at the switch – if the switch even exists.)
@chienfou I’d ask you to look in the box for me, but since it could still go either way…
Also, a reminder that it is getting close to release and catch time, so if you start heading over to the buy button, and don’t forget why you are there, …
@phendrick@werehatrack
Well crap. Totally spaced it out. Of course I was a bit distracted because my wife called after she drove 2 and 1/2 hours to Atlanta and forgot her wallet, which she will need tomorrow when she flies out of the Atlanta airport. Plus she has to have her credit card to pick up her rental car when she gets to Spokane. Guess I’m driving to Atlanta tonight… Enjoy your fan!
@phendrick@werehatrack
That’s what husbands do… right??
Ended up making a 250 plus mile round trip (total), meeting at a gas station a little south of Atlanta. Then got home around 23:00. She is currently on the plane flying to her Master’s residency program for a week in Idaho. All is well …
I got mine today. Trying to put it together, but the blade nut was already screwed on without the blade. I need to get it off to put the blade on, but it won’t budge! Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?
@salcedo Do you have any friends who have an impact wrench? If you were near me, I could have it off in seconds. Otherwise, see if the shaft has flats that will let you immobilize it with an adjustable wrench.
@salcedo@werehatrack That threw me at first, too. I also had a small screwdiver to remove the tiny one in order to attach the blade covers. It wasn’t budging otherwise. The material does seem somewhat flimsy as someone mentioned, but the fan has plenty of power for my needs and it is super quiet.
@salcedo@werehatrack The instructions that come with it show the direction of all the screw parts. That being said, I put mine together easily and used it last night. Super quiet but was a little wobbly. This morning I saw why - the washer for the stand was still sitting on my kitchen counter! Took the bottom part off, put it back with the washer, problem solved.
This deal blows!
P.S. - I’m legally required to post that when a fan is offered. Part of the whole Quip settlement negotiations.
@guybrush01 Well that sucks.
@guybrush01 @mehcuda67 No, that’s for when vacuums are up for sale.
@guybrush01 @mehcuda67 you need a shark/ninja to suck!
@guybrush01 we were all fanning ourselves in anticipation as the Quip epic “event” heated up.
This is my favorite review from the Wal Mart listing.
This picture is definitely misleading…
If it’s so smart, why is it standing around in this heat?
When fan companies act like having a quiet fan is a good thing. Noo. I need it to drown out the ringing in my ears when I am sleeping. No thanks!
@Num1Zero pump it up to 58dB! Otherwise, I know somewhere you can get the hookup on sound machines…
@werehatrack I have saved quite a bit with that strategy. Of course if I’m dithering over an item, I probably don’t really want/need it anyway.
THAT IS TOO MANY SPEEDS. I freeze* when given that many options.
*(hee hee)
And also I just bought a Vornado tower, but even so.
@jrs1980 vornado4L. I got my first vornado here. Well, the predecessor to here.
@jrs1980 I Love Vornados… Have 3 , but not towers.
@jrs1980 @thechilipepper0 @Mandamm Another Vornado Fan fan here. I have a a few here are home and one on my desk at work.
@jrs1980 @Mandamm @thechilipepper0 @yakkoTDI
So what’s the big deal with the Vornado fans, WHY do you guys like them so much? I feel like I’m missing out here.
@mprima That’s great. Sadly,mine does not have a fan only setting.
@jrs1980 @Lynnerizer @Mandamm @thechilipepper0 @yakkoTDI I got one of the cool vintage ones, because it looks cool.
Well, hot, it’s a heater. And SWMBO is always cold.
@blaineg @jrs1980 @Mandamm @thechilipepper0 @yakkoTDI
I’d buy that one too because of it’s retro style. It’s wicked cool!
@jrs1980 @Lynnerizer @Mandamm @thechilipepper0 @yakkoTDI They’ve got a range of retro models, including floor stand types.
https://www.vornado.com/product-category/circulators-fans/vintage
I’ll say it, I’m a huge fan! Mainly because this deal… is a breeze. It will BLOW you away. And comes with a COOL remote. That’s right!
I said it. (Thank you for the “free” product that “fell off the truck” Meh!)
Can a cat knock it over?
@radi0j0hn
How many tall things have you found that a cat cannot knock over, when sufficiently motivated, or perverse?
@radi0j0hn Just once. It would be catastrophic.
@radi0j0hn @werehatrack
@narfcake @radi0j0hn @werehatrack that’s cute, and very true!
@radi0j0hn Hmm, I’m gonna say yes…

Would this work with a smart plug, so I can tell use Alexa to turn it on and off? Or is it too “smart” for that, like most coffeemakers these days?
If this thing is only 47" tall at max and it doesn’t appear that it’s at full-up, then that dude in the last photo must be a hobbit.
@werehatrack the dude in the last photo is from a Maxell (?) ad in the early 1980s.
@ekw Maxell or Memorex, yeah, I recognized it. But I’m a fossil. Still, the scale makes the fan look bigger than it really is.
Walmart’s reviews has only 349 reviews, all five stars. Fakespot thinks this is suspect.
I’m interested but a little worried about what appears to be fake reviews. Anyone at Meh actually try this fan out?

Luckily, nothing was broken, so proceed to assembly.
Parts are super cheap and lightweight, not a good sign.
Fire it up and it blows, but it’s wimpy. Plus, first time it gets knocked over it’s toast, too flimsy to handle an impact.
On the plus side, we’re in the middle of a heat wave in the Northwest so the timing was fortuitous.
TLDR;
SUPER MEH! (what were you expecting?)

I can’t get the blade secured with the lock. The fan stem isn’t long enough, sits slush with the blade. What am I doing wrong??
@davefan66 never mind figured it out.
