@mikesmells@Trinityscrew The two reviews that I found characterized it as being a reasonably decent entry-level basic unit, with only minor build quality issues. I’m considering it solely for the purpose of finding fasteners or small tools that drop into the weeds while I’m working on a vehicle. Dragging a magnet across the area does not always produce results. Being able to rule out the ground below the work point would be as useful as actually finding the missing item, because then I would know that it hadn’t made it all the way to the ground.
@DHMech You realize that if you don’t buy one, next week you’re going to drop something metallic in the unmowed lawn, and not be able to find it until it turns up mangled after the next time the grass is cut. Or you can buy a replacement for the dropped item, and the missing one will reappear pristine and intact after the mower passes over it, but only if obtaining a replacement has rendered the original one useless. This is in accordance with the operation of the Law of Perversity of the Universe.
@lehigh That’s possibly a thing that would get me to buy it, were it not for the number of irks that have consisted entirely of a set of sheets, a MacBook cover, and an obsolete iPhone case. I very much doubt that the detector would be able to spot a case of TrackRs.
I really want it too but not if it’s a crappy one. I spent a week in Daytona and everyday there were people at the beach finding stuff with metal detectors, that’s all I wanted to do but I didn’t have one. I’d see them find 14k diamond/jewel rings and bracelets, it was so cool.
@OldCatLady I bet I’m smart enough to eventually, with tutoring, understand your buy hieroglyphic, but right now all I can do is imagine is something along the lines of ‘fearful buying’.
@syllable
It’s a shortcut and is not too arcane.
/buy only works for VMPs, but your badge says you are NOT one. You can do most of the other slash commands though.
In a “post” or a “reply”, start a blank line by typing the “/” forward slash character.
You’ll immediately get a pop-up menu. Click on one you want or just type what you see, or in this case select “more” at the bottom, and it will illustrate the slash commands, including the “BUY” command.
@phendrick@syllable /buy works for both VMP and regular Mehmbers, but not The Great Unwashed Poo-Blic. I’ve used it, though not very often. If the item has options (color, size, smell, with or without special sauce, etc.) the /buy gets complicated and arcane. Ancient Wizards of Meh sometimes use those things to place an order from within the forum, but us broom-animating apprentices just have to be content with going through the menu.
@werehatrack
Thanks for the info; I was just going by what the markdown command said, as to whom it worked for. In a recess of my undependable memory, I thought I had recalled it used by non-vamps, but wasn’t sure how to check that without lots of effort.
Incidentally, while I have your ear, do you get notified of whispers? I’ve sent you two, without ack, but they’ve been awhile (week or two ago, several months ago). You generally seem to reply to comms.

Oooooo I am super SUPER tempted.
@mikesmells Don’t do it. If you have never metal detected before, buying this junk will guarantee that you won’t take it up as a hobby.

Me, a grown man: I do not need a metal detector. I would likely never really use a metal detector.
Also me, a grown man: I need a metal detector.

@DHMech @werehatrack every time.
I like the ICYMI feature of Meh… On the fence with this one…

My 4 year old has been wanting one so bad… I feel much better blowing $30 on it instead of $100
I hemmed. I hawed. I figure I can use it to get time with the kids… is what I’ll tell the wife! It even came with an oddly specific order number:

Perfect for when meh starts offering buried IRKs in random locations

I bought it. Now help me explain why to my lovely wife. And no, tying it to Valentine’s Day is not an option.
@syllable it is for me! still have no idea where my band went…
@syllable tell her it came in the $50 IRK. Perfect crime.
@medz @syllable That’s what I did with the $100 robot vacuum last time.
@lichme @syllable
@lichme @medz loving my ability to maintain honor now. Thank you for saving my integrity and my marriage.
@lichme @medz love that robot I do. The dog holds a different opinion, however.
Detects “advanced metal”, such as unobtanium?
@phendrick that’s the one! Thank you phen

@Star2236 I know, taking a chance on the unknown! But I’m with you. I wanna try, though. Could be an entry to something bigger and better, right?
/buy
@OldCatLady Oops, sorry. We’re sold out.

@phendrick I have notifications muted, so no, I haven’t been getting alerted about those.
