For the love of all that is nature I need scotch. Washington state has the highest spirit taxes in the union at $35/gal. A $50 bottle of Laphroaig 10yr ends up costing almost $16 in spirit taxes alone; and that’s not even including sales tax. Not only that, but the next closest state Oregon has the second highest spirit taxes (though much lower at $22/gal.)
You saved the wine lovers, now please won’t someone think of the liquor.

I sense a name change coming on… TipsyCat? SoberCat?
I’ll think of you
/giphy pour one out for my homies
@capguncowboy @DrunkCat perhaps it will end up being PinkElephant? Road trip to Idaho or Canada?
you got state income tax too?
@f00l No. Washington state has no state income tax. Politicians WANT to start one, but our state constitution won’t allow it…
But, we have very high liquor & gas taxes. We just got rid of all the stupid ‘State run’ liquor stores and allow private businesses to sell liquor a few years ago. And then started selling legal recreational pot. I’ll stick with good beer & Scotch.
@daveinwarsh And didn’t they screw up the whole “selling recreational pot” thing? (Yep, it’s that @jasontoon on the byline!)
@daveinwarsh I wasn’t here for the state run liquor stores but I honestly would’ve preferred them to paying these ridiculous taxes. I love Costco but I think they got way too greedy on this one.
@daveinwarsh Let’s be real. We Washingtonians need an income tax. Sales tax is regressive and detriments the poor. #herehegoeswiththepolitics
also costco!
@DrunkCat Well without income taxes, the state’s gotta get their $$ somewhere. What are the sales taxes like? In TX, about 26% ($28.9b) of state tax revenue are from sales taxes; other types are ~4% or less. Alcoholic bev taxes were $1.1b total.
@grum Costco overall is a great company, but this definitely marred their record.
I would only agree to an Income Tax if they abolished all consumption taxes.
@DrunkCat The problem is…
They would dump consumption taxes, start an income tax, then bring back the consumption tax.
Right now, Washington is one of the preferred ‘retirement states’.
You don’t need a scotch run, you need a quality moonshine manufacturer near you. http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2013-12-01/business/os-moonshine-central-florida-bars-20131125_1_moonshine-signature-drink-bars
@OldCatLady
how are they gonna get that peat flavor into something messed together in Florida?

@DrunkCat
what about a group run to a nearby state once a year? (not Oregon, if they are also doing this?)
pleasures of a road trip plus the pleasures of unblendeds.
@f00l That requires friends, but I like the idea.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We can’t even buy whiskey on Sunday morning.
@snapster Well likely that’s OK since people would likely still be hung over from Saturday night’s purchasing related event, or just going to bed?
@snapster
Why exactly are you awake on Sunday morning?
If you’re not at religious services, driving to your local hunting/fishing/sports event, participating in that sporting thing, in surgery, trying to get your eyes open so that you can cook breakfast, or under the age of 12, you are obviously some kinda commie pinko.
If you want not to be sober, start the night before like a real human.
@f00l pssst it’s monday
@f00l Wait, wait, wait. Are you implying you would go to any kind of event without alcohol AND have any fun?!?!
@ELUNO
For better or for worse, most of my life continues with little or no intoxication these days.
I’m mostly talk and memory, little alcohol, so to speak. A casualty, perhaps, of hating to go places without a very good reason.
Visiting Walmart would justify a shot of unblended scotch; if i didn’t face the drive home.
However, for any sort of “event”; especially any sort of “corporate event”, some degree of intoxcation falls well beyond “desirable” and heads into “near mandatory” territory.
I try not to volunteer for driver duties then, unless it’s my turn.
Most “events”, if endured without libation, cut close to gritted teeth and smartphone-obsession conduct. I try find reasons to avoid, or to visit the ER instead, if need be.
@f00l Maybe he wants to get a jump on the hair of the dog?
@mehbee
@snapster has created several successful businesses. If he can manage that and The Bezos too, surely he can manage to store some extra bottles behind the components in that atmos home theater.
I never met an even barely-literate frat-head who couldn’t manage to hide a few bottles on Sat afternoon before the higher brain functions shut down for the duration of Sat night and Sun am. I expect @snapster to be at least as fluent in “weekend survival” tactics.
Ok, you prob ought to be able to purchase hard alcohol any time between 6am and midnight, or at least between 9am and midnight, any day of the week. I agree. This is right and good.
But pity the poor corrupt legislature. If the “we wish our county were dry” crowd and the “we don’t want competition” crowd didn’t bribe our democratically elected representatives to prohibit grain alcohol sales on Sunday mornings, how would said democratically-elected representatives be able to afford their cocaine habits? Legislative pay is pitiful.
Have a heart.
Shipping restrictions and local laws would make this extremely tough to implement. Don’t think that you’re going to get around the whole tax thing either; even with the whole no-sales-tax-when-buying-from-other-states aspect on common goods, we’re still “required” to report it under use tax.
@narfcake
Would the local weirdnesses be any worse than selling wine or beer over the net? I know the licensing takes it a step beyond.
Can companies that sell wine/beer over the net ship those freely to dry counties in a state if the state as a whole doesn’t fuss?
@f00l As far as I can tell, it’s illegal to make direct shipments of liquor to customers in most states. I think most of them allow wine, but that’s it.
Head to Idaho. Cheap liquor at Post Falls, ID. You can do a turn-around trip in a day from Seattle. It only takes about 9 hours. Not that I know anything about that personally.
If I knew how to safely send you a bottle, I’d do it in a heartbeat.
@mehbee The best way is to cushion it well. You can do this best by emptying the contents of the bottle and filling it with packing peanuts.
@mehbee
I’d rather Meh pour millions of dollars into lobbyists to get this country’s archaic beer shipping laws changed so we can start buying beer online.
