Suggestions for side sleeper pillow with neck cut out?
3So I finally found the pillow I really like (not sold since around 2013 from Ikea) Ikea Gosa Lilja Side Sleeper Pillow here:
And the postage will run close to $150 to send (it is in Richmond, UK)!!! And not only that it has one bid (for $1.70), closes today (8/14) at 11:30am central savings time so it will never be relisted again.
There is no way I can come up with the money for the postage.
This is the first time ever since I started looking for another one (a several years ago) I have seen one anywhere to buy. This is also the first pillow I have ever had that has worked well for me (a neck/back issue). Sigh.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement pillow? The pillow I have is worn out and falling apart.

If I were in your position, at this point I would buy some memory foam and just try to cut it in approximately the right shape. Don’t you already own one you could use as a guide?
Maybe buy a thinner chunk of foam, so you can cut a base and then cut the raised parts separately. Then, either loosely sew the upper parts on or try velcro or other attachment methods.
It might not work out, but it will certainly be cheaper than $150.
@Limewater Yeah I might try that. Thanks for the suggestion. Part of it will be finding memory foam with the right density
Have you tried a buckwheat pillow?
I’m a side sleeper too. Had mine for 10 years and have no need to try any other pillow. Just replace the buckwheat hulls whenever it loses its “fluffy-ness”. I just know when it needs it, it’s hard to describe. Basically the hulls have flattened and polished from friction, about once a year or so.
I get mine from Beans72.com. Trust me, you’ll need a smaller pillow than you think. It doesn’t need to be as big as regular pillows. You fill as firm or “pushy” as you like.
You just push the pillow into whatever shape you need and the hulls lock in place, and bam! BEST. SLEEP. EVER.
You can get refill hulls and wash the inner cover. I dump the old hulls into to composter.
@mike808 Locks in place? The ones I have tried in stores slide around which I don’t like. Maybe I have only tried cheapies. Any suggestions for a specific one? Thanks!
@Kidsandliz beans72.com Try a standard size pillow if you have a Queen or King regular pillow. The nice thing about beans72 pillows is that they make them true to regular pillow sizes too.
By “locks into place” I mean once you push it into the shape you want and rest your head, the hulls catch on each other and don’t move. If they’re sliding around (i.e. flattened like plates instead of curved like pistachio shells), they’re due for a change or add more fresh hulls if you’re lazy.
@mike808 The ones I tried in a temporary way were in Bed, Bath and Beyond. Maybe they sell “stale” ones?
@Kidsandliz The Sobakawa pillows at BB&B are also an odd size so they don’t fit regular pillowcases and shams. Dont know. Maybe the hulls in the display were worn from use? Could also not be as full as you’d want.
You can also find “real” buckwheat pillows and refills on Amazon.
@mike808 Thanks for that info. Today, Thursday and Friday I will be driving to two different “big” cities (well compared to where I am) that have actual stores. Presuming the apts I have run more or less on time I’ll have time to run around to an actual real mall that has a sleep store in one town and see what I can find in the other. I hesitate to buy something without trying it. I got a pillow in the last fuko and it was like putting my head on a trampoline that pushes back. I lasted with that about 15 minutes. The only thing I don’t like about this is I’ll be driving, collectively, about 880 miles just to get to and from those cities. But at least I can try pillows in person.
@Kidsandliz Costco also has “road shows” of MyPillow ($80 2-pack) and money-back guarantee. Not sure if they are offered online.
Many “sleep stores” are primarily mattress sales and may have few choices in pillows, likely not buckwheat hull filled.
BB&B is the only place I’ve seen them in stores, and then only the “As seen on TV” Sobakawa brand.
@mike808 I think there is a “back” store in one of the cities. They might have more pillow choice. It is worth checking them though if I have time. No Costco around me anywhere.
This one was highly recommended by a friend who said it really helped her back. I bought one for myself, but I prefer a squishy pillow, so I can’t personally endorse it. Has a lot of positive reviews. And cheaper shipping.

@heartny I’ll have to see if I can find that in a store next time I drive the zillion miles to a city with stores. Reviews seem to indicate that some people hate it for side sleeping and some like it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Well that url no longer goes to the pillow I am talking about. Stupid ebay for not preserving the listing. It looks like this:
@Kidsandliz
It’s over here.
@PlacidPenguin Thank you. The url I posted originally did go to the listing and then all of a sudden it didn’t. Nice (not) that ebay decided what I really wanted to do was find a new listing of something different rather than hang on to the original listing.
i use feather pillows. fluff them up and they’ll hold a shape just like that, no problem.
Try searching eBay and Amazon for this:
“orthopedic Cervical Pillow”
Lots of results. Surely some of them are quality. And no doubt way cheaper than ths one you find with the extreme overseas shipping price.
Get a nice down pillow, they easily mush into whatever shape you need. I got mine at Costco.
I tend to be a side sleeper, and I use a CPAP machine, and down works well with both. I get comfy, and mush a little pocket to clear the CPAP mask, and I’m off to dreamland.
I tried one of the “CPAP Pillows”, and the down pillow works far better.
I know there’s a lot of people who have a problem with Mike Lindell, but I have to say, I tried the My Pillow Premium (go for this one over the Classic) and do truly love it. I sleep in multiple positions through the night, and use a CPAP machine, and can definitely say it’s better than anything I’ve tried in my 50 times around the sun!!
@tohar1 I’ll have to read up on it. Thanks for the suggestion.
@tohar1 I’ve wanted one of these for so long, CostCo had them last year.
And I had to pass. Because Mike Lindell.
@lisaviolet I get it, but at the same time don’t. I think we as a society really better not tread down that “slippery slope” of allowing a person’s political views to effect their judgement of the product/service their company produces.
I for one am really trying my best not to. I’ll eat at Chick-Fil-A, and sleep on My Pillow, all the while ordering from Amazon.com without any guilt…
@tohar1 I feel like it’s my money, I’m not going to spend it where I don’t agree with the policies the company/owner promotes.
Never eaten at Chik-Fil-A, never stepped foot in a Hobby Lobby. Same with Jimmyjohns. Even though it’s just a little teeny, tiny drop in their financial bucket, they won’t be seeing a dime from me.
I don’t consider where I choose to shop and where I don’t, a “slippery slope”.
@lisaviolet as far as I can tell My Pillow is nothing special, just chopped up foam. If there is too much in there open a seam and take some out, if too little buy two pillows, open up a seam and stuff some in. In Bed Bath and Beyond there were several pillows that seemed just about the same as My Pillow to me. Get one of their 20% off coupons and try them out. That store allows you to return pillows (not all do).
I don’t have the link to the specific company I ordered from with me but I got some custom cut foam for the back seat of my car. It was surprisingly affordable and fits perfectly. They had all different types and grades.
@cf1 mmm… Necropost
@cf1 @unksol it was bumped by spam. I deleted the spam but this message was right after the spam and I didn’t want to delete it.
@RiotDemon
I like when the spam is still there. I like forum spam because I get to call you.
Just my $0.02.
@RiotDemon @unksol
Hey! What did I miss? I always miss the fun stuff.
@cf1 just typical useless spam to link some pillows.
@RiotDemon Oh. That’s boring. Nevermind.
I prefer the body pillow
