I was listening to the local sports radio (The Ticket) and they were talking about these jackets. Figured it was worth a discussion. Cool? Not cool? Still wearing the one you got back then?
Didn’t remember having one until I noticed the stupid zipper and had vietnam flashbacks to that thing. I don’t even remember why I hated it, maybe it was prone to getting caught on things thanks to it’s dumb shape?
I’m pretty sure I had this one or something like it.
Some of the cool kids had them back in my day. It was never something I wanted to beg my folks for. I didn’t really see the appeal. Seemed like a pain that you had to put them on like a pullover. (no full zipper) I was always perplexed by the teams kids chose. (girls seemed to like purple ones)
Back in the day, our town had a BIKE factory and attached was a Bike outlet. I had all sorts of collegiate and pro sports apparel from there. They had great prices in the outlet. I hated to see that one go.
I have no idea why, but in my town (outside Boston), it was the cool thing for about 5 minutes to have Toronto Raptors gear. I asked for a jacket, got a hat.
I never had a starter jacket, but suddenly I remembered that first you flip the hat, then you grip the hat, then you twist the hat, make sure it’s a Starter hat.
My brother had a Michigan State one and he tired of it quickly so I took it over. It was terrible; it didn’t insulate terribly well and it didn’t breathe, so your sweat just accumulated, which combined to make you cold and damp
Atlanta Braves, still have it but don’t wear it. It’s really poofy and very bulky; I felt like Staypuf marshmallow man when I wore it. But it did keep me warm!
These were really popular when I was in middle school. I begged my mom for one for about 6 months. She found one on clearance at Sears. A Dallas Cowboys one with a giant star on the back. I knew nothing about the team, but I still wore it.
In retrospect, it wasn’t a very functional jacket.
@Targaryen I do that now with all my adult jackets and coats. I blame the wrappers on my daughter. Any candy I discover in my pockets quickly becomes wrappers.
I remember going across the border in Nogales, AZ to shop and buying a necklace from a kid who wrote my girlfriend’s (now wife’s) name on a grain of rice and put it in a pendant…it was February and he was wearing a Starter jacket hunched over to avoid the wind.
Ooh, rich folk clothing.
Naw man, I don’t belong to no gangs back then bro.

I had a Carolina Panthers one that I liked.

If you were to buy one which team would you pick?
@Targaryen The team that has the most slimming colors.
@Targaryen :
Go Spawn!
@Targaryen Friends University of Central Kansas

@medz I love purple.

@llangley I saw one selling online for like $250 on eBay. There is still a market for them it seems.
I had one just like this when I was in junior high:
@Nate311 :cough: um, I think that jacket may be in my closet downstairs . . . .

@fibrs86 Whaaat? It had that awesome flap in the front to keep candy or old candy wrappers you’d forget about until next winter.
