@lljk seriously makes me want to invent something better than BT just so everyone gets to make a brand new speaker, cuz there obviously aren’t enough on the planet
@ruouttaurmind That would be called wire. Oh wait, this speaker already supports a wired connection that doesn’t add any more compression artifacts or reduce its battery life.
@jpc That song has a very boring bass line. Like, incredibly simple and boring. Just because you like a song it doesn’t mean it has a “good” bass line.
@jpc I’m assuming you suggested this song to go along with the theme “bass lines you need to hear with a good sound system”, so I’ve listened to it a few times and it’s the antithesis of the theme of this meh. The bass is just playing the same notes as the guitar, just less often. Literally, if you couldn’t hear the bass line you’d hardly be missing any of the song. If you took the bass out of any songs suggested by the meh author, the songs would sound fundamentally broken.
@capguncowboy What the fuck, Cap?! I wasn’t even thinking about this until you mentioned the garage! Damn you. Now I have to decide whether it goes in the attached garage, or detached garage - and no, I am NOT buying two!!
@ruouttaurmind Right, it’s a passive radiator. You can get subwoofers with passive radiators, but just because a speaker has a passive radiator it doesn’t make it a subwoofer.
@jihiggs Probably some marketing pogue who had no idea what a passive subwoofer is got the brainstorm after talking to an engineer who said “and this part makes the bass sound better!”
I’ve been passively looking for a Bluetooth speaker to stick command velcro strips onto so i can use it in my car, but current budget constraints cant find merit in the price here, meh.
@haydesigner you know theÿ’re all BS reviews when 90% of them “received speaker for a discount in exchange for a review, but after my 5 minutes of testing it, it definitely deserves 5 stars!” funny how loose those stars get when you’re not even paying half price for something…
@alexpope, I didn’t specifically look for them, but I only saw one or two “in return for unbiased review” when I perused… did you really see many more?
I checked out the reviews on Amazon too. Most are really good but the bad ones (9% one star) are for defects, especially failure of the charging port. Even with a one year warranty I’m afraid if it breaks I would have to pay a bunch to ship it back.
I dunno, I still don’t have a Bluetooth speaker. But these have been sold an infamous number of times. What do you guys think, is this one worth the money? Is it the one I should buy?
@Dizavid Most of the ones sold before were on price, not quality. The reviews do look good here, but for me, it’s a bit too dear to consider this an impulse purchase.
Some of the reviews on Amazon mentioned this as a review (they had incentive as one was being given away last year)- although it really isn’t a review, it is more of a demonstration:
@Kidsandliz That was incredibly not helpful. It was a non-review for idiots, put on YouTube for no other reason than to help pad their subscriber numbers.
@grazapin Well that is why I said it is more of a demonstration…what I found more useful that on Amazon around 120 or so people (verified purchasers) said the charging port broke
i was sure it was something amazing when the site took forever to load but was sadly shown something I own one to many of and am not happy with the deals overall
/giphy very sad panda
A Cambridge Oontz is $27 on Amazon. I don’t have experience with the Oontz but I do with Cambridge and they make some terrific inexpensive speakers. I was able to hear the difference between two different Neumann mics on mine.
@noparallel So, it looks like Cambridge Soundworks is another formerly great audio company (like Acoustic Research) that’s now just a shell for offshore crap. I just hope the founders got paid well in the cashout.
That 2200 mAh battery is essentially the same as a single AA. Runtime will suck. Especially for the bass lovers. Because sound is moving air, and bass moves more air than the mid or high frequencies. Thus, more energy is required, draining the battery faster.
Instead of speakers to listen to music , how about some actual music instruments? You know there are good deals out there to find. The buttholes at guitar center can’t be the only ones with cheap quality guitar hookups.
How about some pedals? Or some epiphone or ltd guitars stuff to be had at box stores on sale for under 300 dollars. Surely meh can undercut those prices at GC or amazon
When will we get STEREO bluetooth speakers? Does the market have to sell off these 40 billion mono bluetooth speakers before they introduce stereour versions?
@tjbrewer32 you can use the speaker as a conference system with your phone. The play/pause button also can answer phone calls, and the Mic will let you talk. It’s not very good, though.
@Qub3d I have the JBL docking station and a Bose one where I charge my phone. When I have it on one of those docks my music is playing from those speakers. I purchased the Soundbot and am finding that when I have my phone on my Bose or JBL docking station and use the Soundbot my music only comes out of the Soundbot speaker. I was hoping that the music would come out of where I have my phone docked speaker and the Soundbot, so i can listen to music on both floors of my house. Is there a way to use them both as thats what I bought if for to use as an additional speaker not take the place of my docking station speaker?
@leeleegirl71 this is more a limitation with bluetooth than the phone or speaker. If you use android, there are third party apps that can work around this.
If you want a true multi-room system, you’ll want to look into something like Sonos (http://www.sonos.com/en-us)
Note that reviewers on Amazon said they paid $39.99 for it. Looks like Soundbot artificially raised the price so it looks good here for this sale. Looking at CamelCamelCamel shows the price is generally around $40 and it gets bumped up every now and again. No need to buy now if you’re not sure.
Really want this cause my last bt speaker is broke… But it won’t let me check out, and also won’t let me but VMP… In fact, tried to get VMP standalone twice, said transaction failed twice, and yet my bank account was charged $5 twice. Still don’t have VMP but then tried to just buy the speaker anyway so I wouldn’t miss it, chose vmp at checkout for the extra $5 hoping it might work that way… And it STILL said transaction failed, charged my bank account $5 AGAIN, didn’t the charge $34 for the speaker, and I still dont have VMP even after being charged thrice for it hopefully this can get addressed before they run all out (sent in a support ticket) of speakers but I don’t have high hopes since it’s Sunday . Well, no huge deal but has anyone else had this problem before? Also, could it be because I’m out on someone’s WiFi at their lakehouse, like maybe the settings don’t allow some sort of security data transfer so I can’t buy stuff or is that not a thing?
@narfcake you were right, I forgot to update the billing addres from a recent move… Fixed it and got my money back, successfully signed up for VMP, and now just finding out that the ones they save for VMP at 4 PM ET wont sell to people who just signed up for VMP on the same day, even though I tried buying it this morning before stock ran out, so now I’m not gonna be able to get it and I really wanted this… CAN’T CATCH A FREAKING BREAK
On a completely different note, I noticed the buy mehdown script is returning more pertinent images with the hyphen-less search terms. Good job, @shawn!
Really hope this one pops back up again. Got screwed cause billing address was wrong on my account when I tried to but it + VMP this morning, then once I fixed the address and VMP activated, had to wait til 4 ET to try again and they don’t sell the remaining saved items to same day VMP buyers
I got mine today. First off, this is smaller than it looked in the pictures. I suppose I expected it to be the same size as my wife’s Creative D100, but it’s not.
Second, it’s much heavier than I expected. I’m not sure if that’s the drivers on the speakers or if it’s the stainless steel case. Or, maybe it’s the battery - at any rate, it weighs in at a whopping 699 grams (24.60 oz)
It included a nice nylon audio cable and USB micro charging cable. Setup was simple, as it should be with Bluetooth. I’m not too keen on the audio and USB connections being on top though. I feel like they should be on the back or ends. At any rate, that’s not a big deal.
I turned it on and pulled up some music on my phone. I first sampled Cake’s Fashion Nugget album (that’s just what was open on Google Music) and it sounded horrid. It was milky and wasn’t very loud at all. Then I realized that album’s audio quality is only 128kb (was a rip I did from my CD like 10 years ago). I switched it over to a different album with a better bit-rate and the speaker sounded miles better, but it still wasn’t very loud. I had the volume all the way up on my phone, but apparently, the volume control on the speaker is separate from the phone’s control (also different from the Creative D100). Once I turned that up, it sounded great. I didn’t hear any reverberation or distortion in the speaker despite having it up far louder than I’d likely ever want a small speaker to play. The bass sounds good too for being a small speaker. I think it sounds better than the Creative D100 and possibly as good as my brother’s Bose speaker, but I’d have to have them side-by-side to know for sure.
At any rate, I’m glad I got it. If you didn’t get one, grab them next time.
I had read that these are known to fail for no known reason. I don’t know if that’ll happen to me or not, but I’ll post back if it does.
TL;DR: It’s good. If you got one, good for you. If not, sucks for you!
Mine arrived, bigger than I expected (its all in what you expect). Beautifully built, all cast metal case. Sounds GREAT for its size (I listen soft, but appreciate accurate sound, this has it. Better than MEH Almost Uber!
Sound is ok, not great. Low end is muddy as hell. Not bad for the price, though. I was looking for something cheap for the kitchen and this is perfect.
After a month of regular use, I’m happy with it. The bass can be a bit overdone and I do wish the USB jack and aux jack were on the back instead of the top but it’s not that big of a deal. It sits on my nightstand and plays music all night every night.
Interesting. My experiences don’t match some of those above.
No issues pairing (Galxy S4).
No issues using in “typical” blutoofs range (30+ feet will stumble, but once I stop moving it’s fine)
Sound is great - not muddy at all (until you crank it like a boom car)
The VD/BL values of these little drivers seems pretty amazing for the size. The side diaphragms move like it’s an 8" speaker - in distance and in force. Pretty cool.
I love it - will definitely score another as a gift if they come 'round again.
Mine sucked after a while. One of the bass ports developed a bzzzing fairly early-on, then the charging port got loosey goosey and just stopped working altogether. The nylon cables are cool though.
I used mine on and off without issue, then a couple weeks ago I used it poolside until the battery died completely.
Now it doesn’t seem to charge (red light comes on, red light goes off eventually, but when turned on no light), and when I power it on when connected to USB it no longer pairs / is seen on a scan from a pairing device.
I really like this thing - sad that it seems to have bricked itself for no apparent reason. Thanks to the “triangle drive” screws they chose to assemble this thing with I’m going to have to f**k with it excessively to even get it open (hoping I have a triangle file whose tip will work as a screwdriver)
@Kidsandliz Yeah - I’m still going to pop it open and give it a check. It’s worth the hassle. Specs say it’s a 2200 mAh lithium-ion battery - I assume a small set of 18650’s or the like.
Access looks easy once I get past the idiot fasteners.
Sad I missed it. I still need a BT speaker for the kitchen. My only requirement is that is plugs into ac and is loud. I want to be able to watch and hear videos while cooking and washing dishes, and the white noise of the faucet and microwave wipes out a huge amount of audio volume. I have an old set of wired computer speakers in there and even maxed out can’t hear a lot of stuff. Maybe what I really need are BT headphones. But I prefer speaker sound.
@sammydog01 I actually bought some of those last summer at Wal-Mart and they were do a. Next time I’m there I’ll have to remember to give it another shot. Are they plenty loud?
I have about 2 years on this speaker now, and it still works, still charges, and still pleases me. I will say it is a bit “bassey” for some types of music, but for others, it is adequate! I am glad I bought it…

Another Bluetooth speaker … how … exciting. What’s the special occasion, meh?
This “passive subwoofer” looks more like a resonator, not really a speaker, innit.
@ruouttaurmind looks like a piece of plastic to me.

@Twiminy Cursed with a car stereo that doesn’t take aux in, FM, or cassette tape adapter?

The VD/BL values of these little drivers seems pretty amazing for the size. The side diaphragms move like it’s an 8" speaker - in distance and in force. Pretty cool.
I love it - will definitely score another as a gift if they come 'round again.
Mine sucked after a while. One of the bass ports developed a bzzzing fairly early-on, then the charging port got loosey goosey and just stopped working altogether. The nylon cables are cool though.
Anyone have theirs just drop dead on them?
I used mine on and off without issue, then a couple weeks ago I used it poolside until the battery died completely.
Now it doesn’t seem to charge (red light comes on, red light goes off eventually, but when turned on no light), and when I power it on when connected to USB it no longer pairs / is seen on a scan from a pairing device.
I really like this thing - sad that it seems to have bricked itself for no apparent reason. Thanks to the “triangle drive” screws they chose to assemble this thing with I’m going to have to f**k with it excessively to even get it open (hoping I have a triangle file whose tip will work as a screwdriver)
lol - and I LITERALLY flip it on “one more time” (after dozens of fiddlings over the last 2 days) and it comes on and pairs.
<sigh>
@Pufferfishy Maybe you need to replace the battery. Rechargeables eventually die.
@moondrake Those Philips bookshelf speakers they sold here are available at Walmart for $28. I bought a set for my other TV.
@sammydog01 I actually bought some of those last summer at Wal-Mart and they were do a. Next time I’m there I’ll have to remember to give it another shot. Are they plenty loud?
@moondrake I tried them plugged into my TV and phone- extremely loud with both. I haven’t messed with the bluetooth. The price seems to have gone up. Oh well. I got them shipped to the store.

I have about 2 years on this speaker now, and it still works, still charges, and still pleases me. I will say it is a bit “bassey” for some types of music, but for others, it is adequate! I am glad I bought it…
