@agnesnutter SL is “speechless,” meaning this model can’t be controlled by voice assistants (and can’t listen to you), but also can’t be tuned with TruePlay.
@agnesnutter@legume0490 This device is compatible with TruePlay, which uses your iOS device speaker. You may be confusing it with Auto TruePlay, which is only on portable products.
@werehatrack I have an older (1st gen?) Roku soundbar and wireless woofer and they’re fine, plenty good for the price and anything is an upgrade from TV speakers. Looks like they’re all on sale right now.
@mediocrebot@phendrick I wish the “showme” would know the thread it is on and “seed” itself with images of the crap being sold. But that would probably cost a wee bit more because you’d need a seed/process for each thread.
@cfg83@mediocrebot@phendrick
IDK. Since the pic is generated based on the prompts, they would have to auto insert those prompts based on each thread. While this might be possible, it would also play havoc on some of the showme’s that get posted that have nothing to do with the current sale item.
In this particular case I’m not sure how context would have even changed things substantially. The product for sale is a sound bar not a wireless woofer. The better you fashion your prompts the more likely you will get an outcome you’re looking for.
@chienfou@mediocrebot@phendrick I forget the AI term, but you can “post train” a general AI with things you care about. The above sound bar could have been added to the training. HOWEVER, this means you need to have a $pecialized AI for each daily item. Not really worth the money. Sooooooo, it’s left up to us to craft a good prompt.
/showme Sonos Arc SL Soundbar that looks like a submarine sandwich.
@hchavers But is it the right local amount to make carrying on a teleconference impossible? (I have seen the results of a delay in a PA system in an auditorium. Some bright twit thought that they had the ultimate method of defeating feedback loops. They got a different kind of feedback instead.)
A soundbar is sitting right in front of a TV, so why does it have to be wireless? It’s going to be plugged in for power, so another wire to the TV would be better I would think. I’m currently using a home theatre setup, so it has HDMI going from the TV to the amp.
Well, because I have my TV hanging on the wall I’d prefer it to be wireless so I wouldn’t have to see the wire. It’s a cleaner look, more aesthetically pleasing.
I suppose I wouldn’t care if my TV was on a stand. But then again maybe not, knowing how I think I’d be planning for future changes and want it wireless in case I decided to change things up down the road.
@Kyser_Soze Bluetooth has the added advantage of randomly disconnecting several times a month. The only way to get that feature with a wired connection is to have cats.
@coreyward@Kyser_Soze It’s a wired soundbar, but can be used as a wireless (WiFi) speaker in the Sonos ecosystem when not using it as a soundbar for your TV.
And yes, to be clear, you’ve more or less understood what he said. As in: based on context clues, you know he’s just doomed the protagonist in some way. But you’ve sunk so much energy into this that you have to know the actual line.
Ugh. This bothers me more than it should. I’ve started wondering how often I used context before there were fancy playback devices, like Apple TVs and, you know, VCRs.
Hence, you rewind and turn on closed captioning.
Now, you play it again and learn… it was some Britishism that you were never, not in a million years, going to understand. But you’re in too deep at this point. You’re pausing, you’re googling it, you’re reading about the phrase’s origins, you’re getting distracted by the internet and your fantasy team, and you’re resuming the movie a whole fifteen minutes later.
/showme person seen, understood, and validated with a hint of profound embarrassment
@chienfou Sonos has a 30-day return policy (used to be 100-days) that allows customers to actually use the product. I suspect that’s where the vast majority of these come from.
For what it’s worth, I have 15 Sonos products. The oldest is 14 years old, and the average age is ~6 years. I have never once had a device fail or need service.
@coreyward
Wonder if this is like big screen TVs on super bowl Sunday at Sam’s or Costco. People buy them using them for a big event then send/bring them back!
Even at 40% off, Sonos is overpriced for what it is. And Wi-Fi only… no Bluetooth? Ridiculous. IRK-worthy. And I’d probably end up donating it to Goodwill.
Sonos has always been WiFi. It’s less of an issue today, but WiFi doesn’t compress the audio as much, and has a greater range. So you can have wireless rear speakers. And speakers in other rooms, etc
I watch all of my TV with closed captioning, and I love it! It’s one more sense that’s involved in taking in entertainment, so I find that I’m more immersed.
My kids all do too, having grown up with it, as well as my sister. My husband isn’t as big of a fan, and we turn it off whenever he watches sports, but no biggie.
I still see facial expressions too-you’d be surprised how long most scenes take, unless it’s action, in which case there’s no words anyway.
This is a GREAT soundbar. I have the non-SL version, and it is fantastic. Pair it with a couple of the Sonos One SL (that are still available on SideDeal I think), and you have a great surround system.
@user93264404 I have seen reports that Meh is a bit backed up at the moment, but you might get an actual answer at meh.com/support if you ask them directly.
@user40355266@user93264404 Same. It’s been doing a strange loop around the Dallas area for over a week bouncing from one Fedex location to another. Support wasn’t helpful and just said I can request a refund if it doesn’t arrive by Feb 2nd.

(I think SL is “shadow edition” which i assume just denotes the color and not features? correct me if i’m wrong)
Edit: oops, I guess this isn’t a public one. you can’t see the scores (around the mid 7.x range, mostly) but you can still see specs and such
@agnesnutter SL is “speechless,” meaning this model can’t be controlled by voice assistants (and can’t listen to you), but also can’t be tuned with TruePlay.
@agnesnutter @legume0490 you can tune it with TruePlay. It uses the phone’s mic. I tuned my Sonos One XLs using it.

Welp, that’s out of my price range altogether, so I’m glad I don’t need it. (Hey, that means I saved over $300 including sales tax!)

@mediocrebot So literal outranks context?
@phendrick I doubt that the 'bot’s programming is up to the task of inferring from context.
@mediocrebot Beware, 'bot. A real cat would know that a speaker cone shreds very satisfyingly.
@mcanavino @phendrick @werehatrack I find that pic very satisfying!
@mediocrebot @phendrick I wish the “showme” would know the thread it is on and “seed” itself with images of the crap being sold. But that would probably cost a wee bit more because you’d need a seed/process for each thread.

@cfg83 @chienfou @mediocrebot I was curious whether the bot would “think” dog for the “woofer” to chase a cat. => literal over context of the prompt.
@cfg83 @mediocrebot @phendrick
Oh. I felt that (a real) woofer was the literal context of the prompt!
Guess perhaps they need to have a pun toggle…
@chienfou @mediocrebot @phendrick I forget the AI term, but you can “post train” a general AI with things you care about. The above sound bar could have been added to the training. @Kyser_Soze I would guess that the sound bar can double as a smart crap speaker.
@Kyser_Soze there is even an HDMI cable included. The price comparison model has HDMI eARC. I’m wondering if the connectivity specs are wrong.
@Kyser_Soze
Well, because I have my TV hanging on the wall I’d prefer it to be wireless so I wouldn’t have to see the wire. It’s a cleaner look, more aesthetically pleasing.

@Kyser_Soze Sonos doesn’t describe it as wireless, for what it’s worth. That’s just meh copy.
@coreyward @Kyser_Soze It’s a wired soundbar, but can be used as a wireless (WiFi) speaker in the Sonos ecosystem when not using it as a soundbar for your TV.
I don’t have wireless sound bar money. I do have bag of instant regret money

@mediocrebot Why so many white people, mediocrebot?
(NSFW)
When the sound bar costs more than my older TVs I’m out. I’d buy a new TV first (except the ones I so have haven’t broken yet).
No Bluetooth, No deal.
lol, well, it may be over-engineered but at least it’s over-priced
120(ish) sold so far.
There’s still some left.
Why are there so many refurb Sonos sound bars around? Which part of the product goes tits up?
@chienfou Sonos has a 30-day return policy (used to be 100-days) that allows customers to actually use the product. I suspect that’s where the vast majority of these come from.

@richrauch Where does one come about “donate a $300 soundbar to Goodwill” money?
@richrauch I will never understand people that want to fuss with their phone to connect to a speaker at home every time they play music.
@killians1978 @richrauch Yeah, I’d volunteer to take it off your hands.
