When the item is sold out, why not kill the time and move to the next item?

They probably plan to have higher profit items sold at times of peak visiting. If they automatically advanced it would throw their timing off.
And they want to differentiate themselves from woot!!
For the IRK’s as an example, it is most likely known they will sell out within seconds but they have a 5 minute timer. That is to encourage engagement in the forums.

They want to push it in.our face so we’ll hang around to grab one.
