@emilyap I'm more of a Vice guy, because the HBO show has all these nerdy guys going to war zones and gang turf and I'm all OMG DON'T DIE, but Vox has a lot going for it.
I'll give the new guy a shot. Otherwise, I'll just look at news.google.com and tell myself jokes about how crazy some people are. Stewart was great at coming up with analogies to put things in perspective. That will be missed.
I will be sad. I will also not be able to watch it until tomorrow. (OR whenever CC updates their website) Jon Stewart is a breath of fresh air and entertainment in a sea of bullshit. I may not agree with all of his politics, but he's going to be missed.
I'm not sure if Trevor Noah is going to be able to scratch that same itch, though.
@Thumperchick I'm optimistic, but it does seem like he wants to skew for the millennials with the Buzzes and the Feeds and all that. It might end up being a great show that I'm too old to appreciate.
Larry Wilmore's Nightly Show is coming along nicely. They had a rough start as they tried to find their voice, but it's become well worth watching. And of course there's John Oliver. But his half hour show is not on often enough, nor is it long enough. I never thought much of him until he took over The Daily Show for Stewart last year. He knocked it out of the park.
@Teripie I kept trying to get into LW, but it just didn't hit for me. It's been a while since I checked it out, though - maybe I'll give it another shot.
@Teripie@Thumperchick I'm 100% on board with John Oliver and love the show. Last Week Tonight is my first priority of the HBO Sunday night line up (including when Game of Thrones was on) and it's so nice to hear a sane person talk about these issues and use common sense. Plus the writing on that show is so damn good.
@Teripie - I've been enjoying Wilmore since the beginning. I recently got a cheaper cable pkg - saving $30 a month. I don't get many channels, but now I have HBO! Go figure. So I get to see John Oliver, but I agree it should be an hour. I wasn't a fan of his stint on The Daily Show, but he's really found his strength.
@Teripie I have to admit I hate John Oliver's delivery. He rushes, he stumbles, he never stops to let us take a breath. The metaphors are either awesome or just tortured, and I know from the first one he uses each week how the rest of them are going to go. I stopped watching The Daily Show after a week or two when he filled in for Stewart and I really think the same problem is there on LWT.
But the writing is good enough that it's always worth watching. (Stewart's head writer left to work with Oliver, so that's understandable.) And I agree with @JonT about hearing a sane person talk about these things. I literally just wish he'd talk slower.
And I've been a huge fan of The Nightly Show from the first episode, but you're also right about it finding its voice slowly. Still, the night he went to Baltimore and bought the gang members pizza to talk about the unrest? Brilliant moment and one of more than a few on that show. I also loved when he brought Bree Newsome onto the show after her Confederacy battle flag takedown, but the segment turned a little silly by the end. I'm actually thinking of a quick trip to NYC this month to catch a taping of his show.
@Teripie I absolutely adore John Oliver. My 13 year old does too. I know some people would frown on that, but although he giggles like a mad hatter at the bawdy humor, he also asks a ton of questions and ends up doing his own research on things they cover. We just caught up on a few episodes tonight. He watched a clip on his phone while he was at his dad's and came home insisting that I watch the episode right away. I love that, love that it makes him think.
@Teripie I wish it were longer too -- the discussions just start to get good and then good bye. Just like I wish TDS had been longer --the interviews. I know longer versions were on the net, but still. Good interviews are hard to find.
@JonT Oliver is fantastic on Last week. The main topics are really well put together, and I have fallen far every map highlighting trick they've pulled. I'm fite with it once a week, helps keep it fresh IMO.
@editorkid "The Nightly Show" is a parody of panel shows so, there's always one opinion that is neither yay or nay but, an obscure pov that is supposed to put you off and into one of the other seemingly logical views. It took a min to recover and realize what Holly Walker was doing but, became much more amusing towards the end.
@editorkid@jaremelz@ceagee@Einherjar13@KDemo@JonT@Teripie@Thumperchick The first episode we tried to watch of Oliver's show was just awful, but I've seen a few excellent clips since. Everything I've seen from Wilmore has been great. Honestly, I loved TDS and TCR, but we really didn't watch them much (watching them on Hulu takes some of the urgency from it . . . and it just makes from sense in that context to watch them whenever--which ends up being about one a week, based on what goes viral or hits a particular topic of interest).
@Teripie Last year, HBO's president of programming, Michael Lombardo, said there had been talk about eventually expanding Last Week Tonight to an hour, or to more than once per week.
@joelmw Do you remember which episode it was? There were a couple in the first season that fell a little flat. Give it another try, the main segments have for the most part been very on point.
@joelmw I have to watch LWT on the net later, no HBO here. TDS I watched from Craig Kilborn days. I really like Kilborn's 10 questions. I remember thinking that Stewart was a bit awkward at first. He was nervous on interviews as I recall and funny someone said JO talks fast cause JS did at first. Once JS got his feet wet and started making the show his own, it was so much better than CK. He took it to another level. Several other levels.
@Kevin Once Max kept the drum steady at the end of that song, I knew what was coming next. It had to be. Love that he gave JS the sticks. I would love to see them in concert again. It's been too long.
I like Vox a lot.

I'm bereft. Devastated. Yes, verklempt. They're showing old episodes all day today.
Larry Wilmore's Nightly Show is coming along nicely. They had a rough start as they tried to find their voice, but it's become well worth watching.

@editorkid Love the "Blacklash: The Unblackening" segments. One of my favorite skits:
@Teripie That puts me away, especially Holly Walker's part. All great stuff, but she left me gasping from the laughs.
@Teripie I absolutely adore John Oliver. My 13 year old does too. @joelmw I want to say the first couple were a bit clumsy. It has improved by leaps and bounds, though. LWT is a must watch for us now.
@joelmw I have to watch LWT on the net later, no HBO here.

I fell asleep.
@ThatsHeadly SPOILER ALERT
Anyone on the East Coast - how sad was it? Won't be on for 2 more hours on West Coast.
@KDemo I've got so much to do in the morning, yet I'm compelled to stay up. Fighting the zzzzz's for him!
@jaremelz - Wouldn't miss it. Did you know he's moving with his family to a farm he bought in New Jersey for rescuing farm animals?
@jaremelz But if you're not going to make it and you want to know what happens, here's the story.
@KDemo I did, and it makes him all the more amazing. I have very few people that I idolize. He is one.
@KDemo I kept it together until Cordry.
@jaremelz Not going to get easier. Funny, though.

Thank you Jon Stewart, for making us laugh about things that made us want to cry.

You can play Land of Hopes and Dreams at my funeral...
@Kevin - So moving.
@Kevin Once Max kept the drum steady at the end of that song, I knew what was coming next.
It had to be. Love that he gave JS the sticks.
I would love to see them in concert again.
It's been too long.
A nice first-person writeup from someone who scored a last-minute ticket.
