It started to snow.
The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven.
It looked like a Grandma Moses Print.
So romantic we felt like newlyweds again.

We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape.
What a fantastic sight!

Moving here was the best idea I’ve ever had!
Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again.
I did both our driveway and the sidewalks.
This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again.

The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks.

The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again.
I didn’t realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I’ll certainly get back in shape this way.

Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt.

Roads are too icy to go anywhere.
Electricity was off for 5 hours.
I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm.
Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her.
Guess I should’ve bought a wood stove, but won’t admit it to her.

Electricity’s back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night.

Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they’re too busy playing hockey.

Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they’re out.
Might have another shipment in March.

John was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white sh-t fell today, and it’s so cold, it probably won’t melt till August.
Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to go pee.
By the time I got undressed, went to the bathroom and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel.
Tried to hire John who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he’s too busy. I think the a–hole is lying. December 23

I only own a snow shovel but my elderly neighbors own a snow blower . Every snowstorm I claim I need to borrow their snowblower. Then clear both of our driveways. It allows me to force the elderly guy to not mess with snow removal while preserving his pride .

@blaineg@CaptAmehrican THAT is how you borrow something. I pretty much make it a point to return things I borrow in (hiiopefully) better shape than when I got them. Last time I borrowed a truck to haul something a short distance I filled it and cleaned it up before I returned it.
Last time I loaned out my 20yr old chainsaw (a Stihl) the guy that borrowed it had it tuned and sharpened before he gave it back. Needless to say, I would be happy to loan him anything else he might need…
If it’s light and/or low quantity, or late at night, I will shovel. Up until 10pm though, you’d better believe if there’s any sizeable amount I’m going to run that snowblower until I’m out of gas
This part of Texas, we don’t need shovel or blower for snow – just wait a couple of hours and it is all gone. In the meantime, enjoy if for a while, because it’d have been a few years since we last saw it. Maybe once every ten or fifteen years, snowfall will sit on the ground overnight.

@hchavers Yeah to all of the above but also make sure you drive over the speed limit about 6" from the bumper of the car in front of you. Then if you have to put on the breaks be sure to jam them on and then try to steer out of the slide/tail spin. Be sure to floor it from a dead stop occasionally too. Then while you are waiting for the tow truck you can build one of these with your bare hands Yeah that should about cover the entry in how to have a wreck driving in the snow keeping safe driving in the snow.
@TheCO2 When I was working on my old snowblower a few years ago, I found out I could buy an entire carburetor for about $10, that was considerably cheaper than the individual parts I was looking for.
Depends, if it’s just a skiff of an inch or two, the EZ Plow snow shovel.
I highly recommend it, but it’s getting hard to find, and the price keeps going up. I suspect they don’t make it anymore, and they’re just working their way through their inventory. Brilliant design though.
For heavier stuff, the snowblower. I’ve got a corner lot with 5 foot wide sidewalks. And an absurdly crowned road at the end of the driveway, so there’s always a small lake as well as the snowplow mess to deal with.

A plow would’ve been preferable, back when I lived in Chicago. But now that I live on the Pacific coast, my days of shoveling snow are done. For the moment, anyway.

@ahacksaw I bought an electric (AC) Ryobi “snow shovel” on black Friday on a whim. It was down to $50. I figured at that price it could be handy working around the cars, and other bits the big snowblower is too clumsy for.
The little thing is amazing, it was throwing snow on the roof on my first try, and when I aimed it away from the house, it was easily throwing it 50’!
So here is the thing in states where it snows most people can deal with snow and don’t get the largest snowblower available. In places like the DMV where snow happens irregularly and usually not in large quantities people buy massive two stage blowers for their 1 car driveway and it’s really funny because they pay more in maintenance from leaving gas in the carb then they ever get usage out of the thing.
@bleedmichigan When I lived in the DMV I eventually bought a snowblower. I did have an 80-100 yard up-hill driveway to clear, though.
When it snowed 24+ inches, I was glad I had it.
If I had lived in a normal residential neighborhood, I would have stuck with the shovel.
That’s the farthest north I’ve ever lived, and the farthest north I ever want to live. My truck still suffers side-effects of the excessive salt they put on the roads.
How would a person from Michigan handle this situation?
@Limewater my experience in MD snow near college park has been limited to a max snow fall of about 4 inches at one time. I have heard there have been larger storms but not in the past two years. When that “blizzard” as my neighbor called it happened last year I put the car in 4wd and went to the grocery store. It was just me and two employees. In Michigan I would not shovel unless we had more than 6 inches of snow.
@bleedmichigan Yeah, there’s not generally a lot of justification for 4wd where you are now. That’s probably a big difference. Though I’m sure a lot of people in Detroit or Boston don’t have 4wd and manage…

I took out my cross country skis and skied down rt 29 to the beltway, stopped a few times to help stuck cars, and since it was empty and unplowed decided to ski on the beltway for 1 exit. The only people i saw during this stupid excursion were either the folks stuck i helped or the one dunkin donuts i stopped at for coffee and a donut. They had stayed open and every cop and plow driver around was there.
How would a person from Michigan handle this situation?
You then wash the car, especially the underside, the first day it is above freezing. As a side benefit you will then have ice on the driveway the following morning. Does help with the rust from salt situation though.

In places like the DMV where snow happens irregularly and usually not in large quantities people buy massive two stage blowers for their 1 car driveway and it’s really funny because they pay more in maintenance from leaving gas in the carb then they ever get usage out of the thing.

@bleedmichigan When I lived in the DMV I eventually bought a snowblower. I did have an 80-100 yard up-hill driveway to clear, though.
When it snowed 24+ inches, I was glad I had it.
If I had lived in a normal residential neighborhood, I would have stuck with the shovel.
That’s the farthest north I’ve ever lived, and the farthest north I ever want to live. My truck still suffers side-effects of the excessive salt they put on the roads.
How would a person from Michigan handle this situation?
@Limewater my experience in MD snow near college park has been limited to a max snow fall of about 4 inches at one time. I have heard there have been larger storms but not in the past two years. When that “blizzard” as my neighbor called it happened last year I put the car in 4wd and went to the grocery store. It was just me and two employees. In Michigan I would not shovel unless we had more than 6 inches of snow.

@bleedmichigan Yeah, there’s not generally a lot of justification for 4wd where you are now. That’s probably a big difference. Though I’m sure a lot of people in Detroit or Boston don’t have 4wd and manage…
@bleedmichigan @Limewater there was one year about 15 years ago we got about 30 inches of snow. I took out my cross country skis and skied down rt 29 to the beltway, stopped a few times to help stuck cars, and since it was empty and unplowed decided to ski on the beltway for 1 exit. The only people i saw during this stupid excursion were either the folks stuck i helped or the one dunkin donuts i stopped at for coffee and a donut. They had stayed open and every cop and plow driver around was there.
@bleedmichigan @CaptAmehrican I’m thinking we didn’t live that far apart. I lived in Laurel, off Highway 216, between 29 and 95.
Though I didn’t live there fifteen years ago.

You then wash the car, especially the underside, the first day it is above freezing. As a side benefit you will then have ice on the driveway the following morning. Does help with the rust from salt situation though.
