For many years, pretty much the only time I “smiled” was when performing a public-facing task at work. It was a defensive behavior that tended to keep the monsters from starting off by attacking me. (Honestly, that’s the best capsule description of what it felt like from the inside, even though I did not think of it that way at the time.) Then, a bit over three years ago, I finally made a personal decision that I had avoided for many decades. I smile a lot more now. Many of my friends have remarked about the difference.
