SMART Earthlings needed for your Tech. Help!!!!!!
0I have a new Roku 1, the type that work on standard tv's, I have tried to no avail to get the Android Remote app. to work. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Pro Tab 8.4. My router recognizes the roku but the app. keeps saying that no roku devices have been detected. I've called roku and the woman repeated back to me what I had just told her, about both being on the same network. She kept putting me on hold and basically was reading from a script. Please help, don't make me call roku again.😨

Only advice I have:
@MrGlass yeah that's kinda how alot of my tech. support calls go. I wish I had a magic word.😯
@growyoungagain return it and get a chromecast? My chromecast works perfectly.
@MrGlass
1st Gen or 2nd?
@MrGlass I can't I only have the standard tube tv's(because they still work great and a fundage prob.) and the roku 1 with the rca connectors is the only streaming device that is for standard.
@FroodyFrog 1st gen. Been considering an upgrade but it works perfectly as is.
@MrGlass Interesting. I have Roku 2's on my tv's and they work great. Bought a new chromecast last week at Bestbuy for the purpose of 'casting' video that I took on my Moto X 2014 to show my wife on the big tv because she wasn't able to be at one of the kid's games and I took some video. Anywho, it was really jarbled and disconnected quite frequently. Afraid I'm going to have to return it. My router is old as they get but everything else works perfectly in my house. Not looking for any tech support, just wondering if I'm doing something wrong since you're familiar with Chromecast?
@MrGlass I thought it was a hard drive thread....
@ugadogch It all depends what app you were using to cast. Chromecast works best when your "casting" is actually just a remote control, and the chromecast connects directly to a streaming site. Thats how the youtube & netflix apps work, and for me they have worked flawlessly.
Streaming a video recorded on your device is also possible, but depending on your phone, your router, and the software your using it may not perform well. It also matters what format its recorded in - if you take an HD video, your phone will probably have to stream out an HD video, and it will have much more trouble. If you have a smaller format, (I have some podcasts encoded for mobile, for example) it might stream perfectly fine.
TLDR: Try uploading it to youtube (even on a private account) and streaming it through that, I bet it will work.
@MrGlass Thanks for the great info. I'm sure the vids are in some kind of hd and that explains it. I bought the chromecast thinking it would be like a wireless connection straight from phone to tv. Thanks again!
@ugadogch Yeah, it can go straight from phone to tv - but its much easier for the machines to get it right if they go from the cloud to the TV. I could explain, but you might need a computer science degree :)
1) Does the Roku work fine without the app? i.e. can you watch streaming content using the remote?
2) Are you sure the devices are on the same subnet and there's no firewall or DMZ issues? IIRC, the Roku 1 is wired-only, no wifi.
@nadroj I can watch streaming content using the remote as fine as a roku works.(lagging, loading, retrieving) I will need the android app. soon as I have read countless comment of the roku remote quitting shortly after you buy it. All I know is that my tab., roku, and router are all on the same network, I don't know how to check for the other things you mentioned.?? My big question for roku support was does the app. not work on standard tv's-this was not answered, but I think it might be the answer.
@growyoungagain my original (like really original like N1000 model) remote works fine as do my 2xs and 3 remotes... if you think it is dead, just change/charge the batteries, I have never seen a roku remote die. :)
I'll try to help... but I will need some information first...
when you say Roku 1 do you mean model 2710 (it's on the bottom I think)
how is your Roku connected to your network, by ethernet cable or wifi?
if it connected on wifi is the ssid (the wifi network name) the same on the roku and android device?
3a. If the roku is connected with wire (ethernet), make sure in your router you don't have "Wireless isolation, AP Isolation, Station Isolation, or Client Isolation" enabled... the name can change depending on the brand/make of router but the general idea is that there is a mode that keeps all wifi connections separate from wired connections, and you will want that to be off so your app can talk to the roku. If you are unsure tell me the make/model of router and I can look up the name for you.
@thismyusername yes it's the 2710 and it's wi fi connected, there are no hdmi/ethernet ports on my tv's.Both ssid's are the same. I've gone into settings on router and roku.
@growyoungagain
Yea the 2710 doesn't have ethernet just making sure! (they have called several models the roku 1 over the years ;) )
When you are in the app select menu (upper right) then select "switch device"
Does it pop up as if it found the roku like this:
Or nothing? If nothing leave the app on the switch device screen and on the Roku do "Home, Settings, System, System restart" and see if it pops up.
@thismyusername I'm using the android app from google play and there is'nt a menu option anywhere😣
@growyoungagain weird... I am also using the roku app from google play... this one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.roku.remote&hl=en
I would uninstall the app from the android device (settings, apps, Roku, uninstall) and the restart the device (hold power until "power off" appears, click power off, wait until device goes dark, and power it back up)... then re-install the roku app.
What kind of android device are you using? If the device has a menu key try that instead of the on screen one...
@growyoungagain It looks like you're using your phone?
@thismyusername Samsung galaxy pro tab 8.4. Made in 2015.
@thismyusername this. Wireless isolation can keep every wifi thing from talking to each other directly.
@growyoungagain yea re-install the roku app after uninstalling the roku app and rebooting the galaxy tab, it is very odd that there is no menu button showing up (that device has a hardware back and recent apps buttons but no menu button so the on screen one should work).
Also on the roku might make sure it has the latest updates (Home, Settings, System, System Update).
@thismyusername I did all that and even restarted the roku and updated it, I pushed your link and got the same roku app that I've been trying to use. They all must be communicating, because I'm able to watch Netflix etc. using the physical remote and then go from tv to tablet or tablet to tv and it begins were I left off. I dunno, but hey thanks alot for giving it the post-grad. try.😀
@growyoungagain double check your router, if you have wireless isolation on it could be keeping them from talking.
I still think it is weird that you have no menu button in the app even after a re-install, how are you supposed to get to settings with no menu button?
If you didn't bother to uninstall, reboot and re-install the app I would hope you would give that a try. Won't take that long and if something went wrong on the initial setup it would probably fix it.
Good luck.
@thismyusername I got it to work! The bloody app. works now. I kept going into my router to try and find anything to do with security or firewall.I hit a button called Access Point( I now call it the evil button) and it disabled my wi fi. I could'nt go back into settings to undo it because I no wi fi. Major stressor. Long story short I ended up doing a factory reset on my router and after everything was rebooted the app. worked and it's pretty slick. Thanx again for your help!!
@growyoungagain DON'T PRESS THE INTERWEBS BUTTON!!!!!!! YOU TURNED OFF THE INTERWEBS! :)
Seriously good to hear you got it working... but if you are anything like me you'll end up using the remote more often.
see if you can find the IP address of the Roku. I'm not at mine right now, so don't remember if there's a setting for it in there or not. I use the app FING to check. Then hit the "Connect Manually" button.
@regnowsin I used the Fing app. and found out that my roku was not on my network. Thanx for that suggestion!
@growyoungagain Awesome! Glad it worked. I don't know how many times that has saved my butt.
I've had various issues with my Rokus over the past couple years. I have two of the 2's. XS and XD. Both occasionally have problems with the app. Even having it connected manually sometimes wouldn't work. Sometimes rebooting the router temporarily fixed the issue, sometimes not. But two years in and the actual remotes still work (granted had to replace batteries a few times). I also use my xbox and firestick, so really only use one of the Rokus now, but it's the oldest one.
I really wish that xkcd comic were true. It would make life so much easier.
Long long ago, back when I was teaching CCNA and CCNP classes for Cisco (and thus knew as much or more about TWC/RoadRunner's system than their techs did), I'd simply say "Ok, just a minute" when they asked me to reboot. After about 60 seconds, I'd play the standard Windows startup sound... and move on to the next hoop. I found this to be a faster and much less painful way to get to a person who understood terms like DHCP and upstream router.
Fortunately, I've not had to call them about Internet access issues in years and not having any TV or phone services from them means that things are simple and fairly cheap. (I've never understood how "home phone" makes any sense from companies like TWC and Verizon... why pay them for services that I can get for less elsewhere?)
@baqui63 The only reason I have a phone from them is they offered a bundle that included the phone for less than I was paying for just TV and internet. I had to drop services temporarily to qualify for the bundle, and they actually charged more for internet alone than internet with local channels. I don't understand how that makes sense.
@jqubed they've claimed that to me as well, though when I've pushed them for the bottom line pricing it never seems to actually be true, though I will grant that there can be occasional (though temporary) promotional pricing that may make things no more expensive if TV is included (no TV here).
I cannot speak for the rest of the country, but here in NY, there are almost no taxes on internet (only a tiny franchise fee and salestax on the cable modem rental), while phone and TV are taxed fairly heavily (I'm using the term tax for anything not included in the advertised price, whether called a fee or surcharge or tax)...
them: "... but you'll save $5/month if you also take the home phone."
me: "And what about when you add the taxes and fees? How much more (or less) is the bottom line price?"
them: "Well, er... ah..."
me: "Yes?"
them: "Well, it costs $12 more per month."
me: "How is that less then? When it costs the same or less, please call me back. Until then, no thank you."
Does the Roku 1 allow for the android remote? I have a few 3s and they all do but I've never tried it with a 1.
