@brochenzo Dishwashers abrade the edge of the knives because the water and detergent are jetted onto the surfaces at a high velocity. Same reason you're really not supposed to put non-stick pots and pans in the dishwasher (in that case, the coating is blasted off by the jets). Also, metal knives will eventually rust if not carefully dried. And a rusty knife cannot hold an edge. Ceramics (well, make sure the glaze is dishwasher safe first, but most food safe ceramics will be, I think), non-delicate glass, plastics and metal that you don't mind getting a smidge rusty are all okay for the dish-washer.
@DannoHung Actually... there are a lot more things you might not want to put in the dishwasher. I can't really enumerate them all, but if you want a knife to stay sharp, hand wash and hand dry it.
@DannoHung If the knife is made of high quality stainless steel, as long as you don't leave the cutting edge in contact with other things like glass or metal, the dishwasher typically won't affect it. It might leave spots which don't affect the blade. If the tempreture in the dishwasher doesn't stress the stainless inner liner it won't stress the probably much higher quality stainless of the knife. What it will do is destroy the wooden handles.
Lefties take note - these handles are designed for right-handed people. Obviously, a left-handed person could use them, but the curved part of the "D" is designed to fit against the palm of the right hand so it would feel slightly odd in the left hand. Here's some info from Shun.
I thought long and hard about it meh, and I decided that instead of buying these for $240 I would try to negotiate for a better price. I am comfortable starting off at $8. I await your response!
@JonT does that also include my helicopter? I dont have $240 for nice knifes unfortunately. Feel free to ship that goat prize and heli any time though. Its just slowly eating away at my soul.
Think about that $8 offer though, im willing to budge a little, not much, but a little.
@lisaviolet Pretty sure nobody really knows if goats get prizes. It was brought up months ago that goats might get prizes. I just keep bring it up since @JonT said he was gonna send them back in September...NEVER FORGET!
"12/7/08 unixrab: Your order for 1 Shun Alton 7 Piece Cutlery Set Including Bamboo Block on 12/04/2008 has been recently shipped via FEDEX Your tracking number is: 068666420."
Great knives! You can't abuse them like you can with thicker German blades, but you won't find a sharper, longer lasting blade out there. Plus they look spectacular. If I didn't already have two of these knives I would be jumping on this deal. Oh well... Those of you that enjoy cooking and should really give this deal some thought. No kitchen should be without a sharp chef's knife.
If my SO hadn't just bought me the slightly better/fancier Shun Premier Damascus chef's knife for my birthday I would definitely get these. It's my first good knife and the difference between it and the cheap Ginsu I was using is incredible. If you've never used an expensive and well made knife, it's hard to convey how different it is.
Anyone that wants to get serious about cooking at home should seriously consider these.
Ouch on price in general, but the truth is a good knife is worth its weight. I love my Henckels, and also like Wustoff's. Use a crappy knife and you won't know any better, sort of like being poor and not realizing how good life is when you are rich. Have a taste of the good life and you'll want it. Use a good knife and you'll want it.
Good price and the right selection of blades. Would like to add Shun to my block, but can't do it, especially this close to xmas. Great gift for most cook types that like to use a good knife.
this is the hardest non-purchase yet on meh. i've never had a Shun, never even used one. i'm sitting here telling myself that my Globals work just fine.
I love all my Kai/Kershaw/ZT knives, so I was really close to picking this up to have a few Shun kitchen knives, but I think it's a strange set. Seriously, how often do you need a Panini Knife?
@neuromancer While I wholeheartedly agree with the need for a serrated kitchen knife, does anyone really need a bread (sorry, panini) knife made of fancy VG-10 damascus steel?
@neuromancer a sharp knife made of good steel will beat a serrated knife every time. The cut will be more accurate and cleaner. Serrated knives destroy half the slice into crumbs.
@Vargas Even if you assume that serrated knives are perfect for bread, do you really want to have a 6" one? I have had many loaves of bread that are at least 9" wide. Calling it a panini knife is hilarious but... that's really what it's good for.
@JonT You make a good point. I could grind off the serration and shape my own bevel. Only problem is knives are tempered harder towards the spine of the knife. Which means it won't hold sharpness well. This is indeed a sad day.
@coleslaw9 I would love a set like this, but the last time I had an expensive kitchen knife, I caught my roommate trying to open a can of chef boyardee with it. I can't have nice things.
@coleslaw9 I had wanted a Shun knife for a long time and like I said earlier in the thread my SO just bought me one for my birthday and I'm so happy with it. Good knives matter to people that like to cook a lot.
If I didn't have a custom made kitchen knife set I'd be all over these.
VG10 is an excellent steel. My pocket knife is VG10 and I abuse the heck out of it. After a year of abuse (including multiple drops on concrete and cutting wiring on a weekly basis) it finally needs to be sharpened.
Ooh, tempting but we just spent the kitchen stuff budget on new pots and pans. I'm also still using the hell out of my Kai Tan Ren set (think Shun's old starter set) and my friends still bicker over uses my knives if we're cooking together. If I were due for an upgrade, I'd snap these up in a heartbeat. Not the block though, my counter space is precious and knives belong on the magnet.
Shun knives are nice but am I the only one who is irritated by the fact that the block is considered a piece? Four piece? DAFUQ. That's Samurai for "bitch, you crazy."
$240.00....Wowee.....that's more than I have spent in total with meh in all of 2014.....to include vmp. That's two months car payments for me..... Obviously I am mixing with folks above my pay grade. Will check back after Christmas for the $5.00 thingies.
Have the cash, have the desire, just don't seem to ever have the time to do that much cooking. I'll probably regret not jumping on this. I do have a decent Henckels chef's knife, but the matching set would rule. Argh...
man I do love incomplete knife sets............... NOT...... and I don't like my mother putting random knives within a german knife set block I don't need her trying to fill the void of another block..... how about you just sell me that panini knife its crazy curves is catching my attention
Meh, with regret. Have been looking at a set of knives for kitchen but suspect Wonderful Wife may have a set stashed for me at Christmas. Don't want to double-dip. I'll probably regret not getting them, though.
Oh so tempting... Nah, just screwing with you. I'm perfectly content using the circa 1989 steak knives Mom got from Reader's Digest. For about 6 months, every condensed book came with a free knife.
I've used nothing but Shun knives for years. These are the best knives money can buy hands down. I don't care that I already own everything in today's deal I bought it again because I've never seen that low of a price.
Seriously - a now-cliched quotation gets more (way more?) votes than the clever J Peterman sendup? That was just about the best one-time character (outside of the Soup Nazi) to appear on the show. Not to mention Frank's "flashback."

@mediocrebot betcha can't beat my $5 goodwill cutcos. Sheetrock didn't stand a chance...
@mediocrebot I have had this set (sans block) for years. Best freaking knives ever - lasted far longer than the boyfriend who gave them to me.
Not baby arm compatible. @Barney loves purple
@Twiggy115 I love purple.
@ledieudufromage $5 Cutcos? Jealous. I sold Cutco for a while and that's an amazing find.
ehhh, I think i am gonna stay with my IKEA knives
@ninkorn throwing away my IKEA knives was such a good feeling
woot flashback ..... meh
I can barely afford store brand knives, let alone these. Meh.
People are going to freak about the price.
"Steel Degrasse Tyson" made me laugh.
I feel like I'm a garage sale and they have a partial knife set in the middle of the nice stuff
"That's not a knife, that's a spoon."
@stoopkid "Ah, I see you've played Knifey-Spoony before!"
Think I'll stick with my Ginsu, even though it's not purple.
@heartny I love purple.
@heartny My ginsu are purple! :)
Yikes. That's an expensive knife right there.
this might make a record for least number of purchases, good job lisa.
No.
Why is the Chef's knife dishwasher safe but the other two are not?
What about the block, is it dishwasher safe?
@Comedian No knife is truly dishwasher safe unless you want to spend a lot of time resharpening your knives frequently.
@DannoHung why is that? ELI5
@Comedian You also have the extreme heat (and cooling) which stresses the metal blades.
An awesome deal that I can't afford. Meh
This is a really good deal and really good knives. But meh, anyway. Already have my trusty favorites.
Chef knife only and I'd be all in
@heli0s You can just throw the other 2 away
@heli0s I'll buy the paring knife from you for 30 bucks! My Shun block only has room for one more small knife.
We have fancy German knives. Just got a new santuko knife. Otherwise I'd be on this.
@Headly fancy German knives are the best! have had the same set of Wusthof knives for over 30 years, wouldn't trade them.
$240 for knives? Did Meh just pull a Woot 2.0 on us?
Who has an extra $250 to spend on themselves this close to Christmas? Not this guy. Mehberries.
@BootlegCraig not I that's for damn sure. But they are real nice knives. I bought the chef knife for my daughter and son in law as a wedding present.
@BootlegCraig Being an asocial recluse has its advantages...
Why can I only buy 3 sets? I need 4.
You're right... I'm not going to buy these knives.
Lefties take note - these handles are designed for right-handed people. Obviously, a left-handed person could use them, but the curved part of the "D" is designed to fit against the palm of the right hand so it would feel slightly odd in the left hand. Here's some info from Shun.
@SinNYC My southpaw wife wouldn't approve. Meh.
@SinNYC Just go to your local Leftorium
I thought long and hard about it meh, and I decided that instead of buying these for $240 I would try to negotiate for a better price. I am comfortable starting off at $8. I await your response!
@studerc $240, free shipping, and a goat prize. Final offer.
@studerc I'll take your $8 and slice it to $7...
@JonT does that also include my helicopter? I dont have $240 for nice knifes unfortunately. Feel free to ship that goat prize and heli any time though. Its just slowly eating away at my soul.
Think about that $8 offer though, im willing to budge a little, not much, but a little.
@studerc $9 ... plus $231.
@studerc I'm in for the $8 set! In for 3 at that price.
@JonT Do all goats get goat prizes?
@lisaviolet Pretty sure nobody really knows if goats get prizes. It was brought up months ago that goats might get prizes. I just keep bring it up since @JonT said he was gonna send them back in September...NEVER FORGET!
@studerc I won't!
Shun makes great knives but the VG10 line chips rather easy. So Meh.
these really are awesome knives... too bad they cost more than most of us'll ever spend on 'em.
"Stick around!" - Arnold Schwarzenegger, PREDATOR
Are the knives really named shun, or are those instructions on what to do with them?
I'm thinking the heart monitor watches are starting to look good.
Gonna stick with the Wustof.
if only it was 2008.... & woot.com ........
"12/7/08 unixrab: Your order for 1 Shun Alton 7 Piece Cutlery Set Including Bamboo Block on 12/04/2008 has been recently shipped via FEDEX Your tracking number is: 068666420."
@unixrab how much?
@brochenzo 5 Knives, The block and a Honing Steel: $276.00. .... however:
Those look so nice...
...this is a website for cheapskates. It's meh.
@JonT Can confirm, these really cut through the plastic wrap on the DiGiornio with ease.
@Stallion This sounds more like reasons for me to never buy a good knife...
@Stallion Like living under a Rock. By the way, leave my rock alone!
These are awesome knives and I own several, all of which I got for free. If I hadn't spent all my Christmas money already I'd totally hit this up!
Add me to the camp of "would purchase but too poor at the moment to purchase".
I love all my Kai/Kershaw/ZT knives, so I was really close to picking this up to have a few Shun kitchen knives, but I think it's a strange set. Seriously, how often do you need a Panini Knife?
Hardest meh ever :( Someday I'll be rich.
Boo serrated knives. Would definitely buy if I didn't have to waste extra money on a serrated knife.
@Vargas the serrated knife is so you can cut things like bread without crushing it. I guess not every kitchen needs on, but i use mine all the time.
@brhfl i believe a fillet knife is more appealing than a bread knife.
@Vargas ...but these are sharp knives made of good steel that are serrated...
Want. Just waiting for my ship to come in. I'd settle for a raft.
@KDemo That's funny.
"I've always wanted these knives" said NO ONE ever...meh
@coleslaw9 I would love a set like this, but the last time I had an expensive kitchen knife, I caught my roommate trying to open a can of chef boyardee with it. I can't have nice things.
@neuromancer apparently not if y'all are eating Chef Boyardee. Better than Wal Mart brand I guess...
@coleslaw9 I want those knives. Used them at a friend's house. . . they are freaking awesome. But I think i'll steal them instead of buying.
@coleslaw9 I had wanted a Shun knife for a long time and like I said earlier in the thread my SO just bought me one for my birthday and I'm so happy with it. Good knives matter to people that like to cook a lot.
@coleslaw9 I have always wanted these knives.
@coleslaw9 Many professional chefs have said exactly that.
Shun knives are nice but am I the only one who is irritated by the fact that the block is considered a piece? Four piece? DAFUQ. That's Samurai for "bitch, you crazy."
And to think I can buy almost 5 barrels of crude oil for 1 set of kitchen knives...
What? No video of them slicing cans and tomatoes? Meh...
@visualseed or even slicing a can of tomatoes....
$240 could buy a lot of speaker docs.
For once I'm going to be the Shunn-er and not the shunn-ee.
I therefore shun you, Shun.
No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
Awesome knives though.
I love purple.
$240.00....Wowee.....that's more than I have spent in total with meh in all of 2014.....to include vmp.
That's two months car payments for me.....
Obviously I am mixing with folks above my pay grade.
Will check back after Christmas for the $5.00 thingies.
I'm afraid I must shun this deal. Meh day to you sirs!
I never buy anything that might be used against me. MEH
"K.N.I.F.E.G.R.A.B.!"
This was actually very tempting until I saw the price breakdown and realized I could save money buying the only two items I'd use full price. Meh!
Have the cash, have the desire, just don't seem to ever have the time to do that much cooking. I'll probably regret not jumping on this. I do have a decent Henckels chef's knife, but the matching set would rule. Argh...
So much meh.
So close to a purchase. Unfortunately, the Chef's knife is the one I really want, and the other two don't bring enough to the party. Meh.
I'd be all over this if I hadn't just acquired some Henckels.
man I do love incomplete knife sets............... NOT...... and I don't like my mother putting random knives within a german knife set block I don't need her trying to fill the void of another block..... how about you just sell me that panini knife its crazy curves is catching my attention
Hoping for more of these high end items
Meh, with regret. Have been looking at a set of knives for kitchen but suspect Wonderful Wife may have a set stashed for me at Christmas. Don't want to double-dip. I'll probably regret not getting them, though.
@Sarahsda At this selling rate, if the wife doesn't get you a set I'd say there's a pretty good chance we'll see them again.
@Cinoclav Just for the record, if my wife doesn't get me knives, I'm blaming @lisaviolet
@Sarahsda There's probably a reason for that.
Oh so tempting... Nah, just screwing with you. I'm perfectly content using the circa 1989 steak knives Mom got from Reader's Digest. For about 6 months, every condensed book came with a free knife.
@bluedog I never understood the condensed books. I added a half-can of water, but nothing happened.
@Sarahsda Blame @lisaviolet for the lack of results.
@bluedog
@Sarahsda ahahahahhahaha! thanks for that. :)
ITT: people don't realize that good high quality knives are expensive.
Just stopping in to not buy these knives again.
These are nice knives at a nice price, but all my cooking is easy-prep these days, so a $20 santokubukuro is meh enough.
This gives me high hopes for the next fuku
@Vettvilling you should probably immediately lower those hopes, just to be safe.
@JonT haha well I have incredibly low hopes for actually getting a fuku so it balances out
@Vettvilling fair enough!
47 sets sold. But no one from my fair state of Indiana has taken a stab a them yet.
@ilovereality Knives aren't for stabbing.
@Cinoclav knife is for cutting.
@JonT Spoon is all you need.
@Thumperchick @JonT
@Cinoclav what's for stabbing, then?
@Lera Shanks are for stabbing.
Why am I still thinking about buying a set?
I kind of feel like I'm cheating on my Wüstohof set...
I love these knives. I want these knives. They are still a hint too highly priced based on camel best prices at Amazon.
