@jasneko @sammydog01 Oh, too bad - can you resubmit those designs in a different contest sometime? I did vote for your new one. And - very interesting … for the first time I saw three shirts disqualified because “no Peanuts!” Is that now a thing? Or just for this derby? I’d be so happy if it’s for all contests here on out because it’s gotten to be so lame and automatic for people to do Peanuts shirts.

You are correct!! No more Peanuts at all due to takedown requests for all of them - the past shirts should be taken down too. I wondered why there were some strange blank spots in the top 20, and then later I saw the news in an artist forum.

I have been confused all this time anyway at all the use of other people’s characters. When I first joined the derby and for many years it was SO strict about only original artwork (or occasionally allowing parody but it had to be only the suggestion, not an outright copy).

@jasneko @Kyeh @sammydog01 Yeah, things were definitely different back in the earlier years. Besides the editors, the contract was that Woot took exclusive rights to the designs, almost meaning they owned it – which meant they were much more conservative in what parodies were allowed. With all rights relinquished in later years, Woot was basically “we don’t own these, we’re just printing them”, and things got more lax with IP. It didn’t help that the many of the daily shirt sites were playing the IP infringement game too and took sales away from Woot.

@jasneko @sammydog01 I’m SO GLAD! It was at the point where there were always more Peanuts shirts than probably any other theme and I couldn’t understand how they kept getting away with it. Was the complaint from the Peanuts estate? Now they need to start working on banning more unoriginal characters. (Muppets, Monty Python.)
I’m happy that you’ll be able to reuse your rejected designs too.

What I find irritating is that I can’t use safari to check out as the page doesn’t load correctly. I have to remember to sign in on firefox (which I forgot to do and so had to copy/paste urls to load my cart on firefox that way. You’d think if you sign in with the same signin it would stay in the cart. Apparently not.

@jasneko @Kyeh They’re kind of playing the “if we get caught” approach. Not the way I’d do things, but if the other crowdsourced shirt sites are doing it …

@Kyeh This is an aspect I’ve noticed with @jasneko: very seldom will she rely on the IP of others for her designs. About the only time is when the derby calls out for such. The majority are of her own creation.

(One of these days, I still need to do a count whether I’ve surpassed the 4 month mark yet.)
