Ship geeking and vhf 16
8This is the thread for ship info and my omg moments on things heard on 16.
Lady Washington went aground today. Nobody is hurt, coast guard says ship sustained no major damage but omg running Lady Washington aground is a major captain and crew failure.

Just to see what we’re talking about here:

Wow.
In a smaller craft, it’s called ‘finding bottom’. This is very different. Off to find news stories.
I had to look up VHF 16, and it reminded me of this commercial.
@Trillian what are you sinking about?
@jbartus I’m sinking about what to have for dinner.
@Trillian but that’s dessert!
@jbartus THIS is dessert.
We ran a certain, to remain nameless, 100 ton schooner aground in South Boston between Thompson Island and the shore (near where that little enclosed bay is). Fortunately mud bottom. Had to kedge off. PITA. And no, I was not at the wheel. And yes we got laughed at because there was the usual collection of smaller boats on schooner watch circling us.
Same boat, same captain (that would not be me) nearly demasted attempting to go under a bridge at high tide.
Different boat, different captain, nearly collided with a submarine. He didn’t see it on the radar (duh) and when he ignored me from the bow (I was on bow watch - rush hour on the Elizabeth River, Norfolk by the Navy base), I ran back and told him (that is when he said he didn’t see it on the radar).
Same dope wanted me to fend off a 10,000 ton tanker (under tug control, also on the Elizabeth river right by the navy base), while on the end of the bowsprit in 60 knot winds (sudden rain storm - we were not under sail). That I refused to do. Good thing I refused as a dumb ass so called captain of an around 30’ sailboat under power (headed the other direction and apparently was not listening to 16) with the mast bouncing back and forth like a top in waves, decided the prudent thing to do was cut between us and the tanker rather than between us and the Navy base (wind was blowing the lot of us into the Navy base). That thing nearly got tangled in the bowsprit, not to mention narrowly missed being crushed between us and the tanker. The words that came out of the mouth of the guy on one of the tug boats…my my my there were LADIES present. LOL.
I was on the HMS Rose once in NYC and the Eagle was docked nearby. The Brig Niagara was directly in front of us. Not sure exactly whom (think it was the Eagle but they used the Brig for access) too a very long ballon and attached it strategically to the lion figurehead… as the captain of the Rose was a bit laid back about the “rise and shine” time, it was maybe several hours (like maybe 10am or so thus many visitors on the dock) into it before we noticed. Radio chatter about this was entertaining after we finally got up and went to investigate why people were pointing and laughing.
And then there was the time we ran out of diesel between Marblehead and Salem, nearly hit Egg island, tore the sails in the storm (booms dipped into the waves as we rocked back and forth - drained the stove to get more diesel - EPA had shut down the dock in Boston)… that it was the middle of the night is what spared us from radio chatter about this… But can you imagine the headlines - Tall ship ship wrecked off of Salem. We would have been the laughing stock of Boston and the tall ship world.
@CaptAmehrican What boat are you on? Harbor Taxi, “tall ship”, or something else?
Oh yeah… I forgot about the NPS service movie being made on the James River for the “discovery of Puerto Rico” to be used in the visitor center at some park there. Susan Constance (which I was on), Lady Maryland, and the Godspeed. Tide is going out (we are anchored at the park just south of Jamestown foundation). We are swinging at anchor (and to pass time we are also engaged in a powered donut fight using a funnelator - nice hit on the black hull of the Lady Maryland. Always wished I had seen the movie to see if you could see it in the movie, we were also sending a tender between boats sharing snacks - I am sure that didn’t happen with the discovery of that island LOL) while they filmed on shore, the director kept telling us to stop swinging - which we eventually did when the lot of us went aground in the out going tide - not only that then all of us were listing to one side as the tide continued to go out (anyone who saw that movie who knew boats would have laughed their heads off). The Norfolk Rebel (tungantine) pulled the lot of us off. Listening to the captains discuss the film director during this was very entertaining. We also had bets going over the radio about whether or not we could even get pulled off during low tide.
@Kidsandliz black hull of lady maryland?? She is a pink and green boat.
@CaptAmehrican OK so which one is black that used to be (still might be) out of Maryland? It’s been a while… (early 1990’s). Not a schooner (rigged very similarly to the Susan Constance with big windows across the stern if I recall correctly). Mostly black, small amount of white. Went down the ASTA list and didn’t recognize any name. I thought it was state or city owned in Maryland.
@Kidsandliz
@Kidsandliz
@Kidsandliz maybe the sultan 1st pic or the Maryland dove 2nd pic
@CaptAmehrican Maryland Dove - it has to be her. I remember Maryland in the name and/or from Maryland but pretty sure Maryland was in the name. But I sort of remember more black on the hull. Rigging looks about right too. Maybe the white I remembered is the donut powdered sugar and sails? It was one day a long time ago… Maybe I am remembering the windows from another ship… possibly one of the Toronto Brigs maybe as I have spent some time on them (that was in the 80’s)?
@Kidsandliz @CaptAmehrican In case you’d like to examine her in detail:
@jbartus Well of course. You don’t think we’d have as much fun on putt putt boats do you? (Ignoring when we need to use the “iron genoa”).
Ok last week there was a vhf 16 drama about a boat shooting at birds. Today in paper is an article about a cop getting charged for shooting and killing birds from his boat on federal land.
@CaptAmehrican That just makes me shake my head. Sad. Glad the cop got caught.
@CaptAmehrican You getting to do any whale watching with whatever you are working on now?
