1x Sharper Image by Vornado AXIS 12 Desktop USB Airbar Tower Fan
@agnesnutter I am not a shill for vornado, I swear, but this fan is so quiet that my husband often forgets to turn if off because he’s forgotten it’s on. I was offended at spending so much, but it’s really nice: https://a.co/d/a2wzq4x
(But if vornado wants to pay me in fans, I live in a hot climate and don’t have AC and would happily stress test anything)
This looks pretty cool. A nice modern looking blower fan that could sit on my desk. I watched one of the videos on the Amazon reviews and when they turned it on it sounded like turning on one of the old 1U rackmount servers I used to manage. I don’t miss working in the server room so I’m going to pass.
@djslack Eek yeah super-tiny fans can be surprisingly annoying. I had a home security NVR that was basically a 1U size, and same thing, sounded like a very small propeller plane taking off, 24 hours a day. Put it in a closet but ended up only using it when I was NOT there (seasonal stay).
Im still reeling on the John diatribe…WTH? Who reads all this? They actually paid someone to write that? Asking “Rufus” over on the jungle if an ironing board can make a margarita is so much more humorous.
@KSchweitz@lehigh Question for our English language scholars (aka Grammar Police) out there: If something that is annoying can be an annoyance, can something that is harrowing become a harrowance? Seems like it should be. Fix that in our language, please.
@macromeh@theycallmemrmoo Damn, don’t normally read the long write-ups but I did just now because of the comments. Who was watching me the last 40 years? I like to at least tell myself that the work/life/whatever was changing and stimulating and educational and explorational. But some of the time it wasn’t. There was “harrowance” (new word we made up; search forums for details). And then you wonder how long you have to keep doing this. 40 years was the answer I guess.
Reminds me of one of my favorite Far Side sketches (sorry internetz can’t find it). Two scenes one guy is lounging on a desert island under a coconut tree, and one guy is working in a windowless office with a clock clearly visible on the wall so you know when you will be allowed to leave and come back and be at your desk the next morning. For 40 F’in years. Yup. It seemed to be asking which was a “wasted life.”
@Mandamm Translates to warehouse full of failed stuff from closed stores in failing shopping malls, bought for pennies on the dollar and liquidated here for 15 pennies on the dollar.
Looks like this is smaller than I’d imagined… as opposed to the last Sharper Image fan I got here which ended up being TWICE as large and probably three times heavier than it looked on the site.
@Perfect_Timing it’s not the first time in history something has been touted as being twelve inches and once in hand been reported to be smaller than expected.
@djslack@Perfect_Timing Of course. What else might people have been thinking? Also the Subway bread=cake controversy where the British government tested the bread for sugar content and it exceeded what would be considered “bread” and so said it should be taxed as “cake” instead which has a higher tax rate.

Sharper Image became so trashy that a fan company was able to buy them out?
Don’t suppose anyone can speak to noise level? I like my fans to be nearly silent.
@agnesnutter Update: sounds from Amazon reviews like it’s lacking (or, the opposite, rather) on the noise front. Oh well.

@agnesnutter came looking for the same thing. I’m not a …um… fan of noise.
@agnesnutter I bought 2, one has a waning hum, it goes up and down, extremely noticeable. The other does not.

I refer to those small loud fans as “angry bees”, since there’s usually many in each server for redundancy, and to make up for the size.
This costs the same as the real Honeywell tower fan that sits behind my desk.

@KSchweitz As an AARP-eligible mehmber I thought John’s diatribe was brilliant, funny, and yes a little bit harrowing.
@KSchweitz part of the enjoyment of meh is reading the write-ups . . . Just saying
@KSchweitz @lehigh Question for our English language scholars (aka Grammar Police) out there: If something that is annoying can be an annoyance, can something that is harrowing become a harrowance? Seems like it should be. Fix that in our language, please.
@KSchweitz @lehigh @pmarin I think you can fix it yourself. “The People” have literally destroyed literal, according to Webster.
@blaineg @KSchweitz @lehigh Like, Srsly?
@blaineg @KSchweitz @lehigh I’m working on “harrowance;” trying to use it in as many places as possible.

So Many Fans… Love Vornado. Still don’t understand the Sharper Image part of this equation.
