@hchavers My mother wanted a vacuum for Christmas in 2014 or so. Lots of dogs, she likes the clean house, she didn’t want to do the research to find a good one and then go get it. It took her MONTHS to convince my dad that it wasn’t a trap.
I git a Shark a few years ago and the plastic parts started snapping off in short order. Never again. That’s why I bought the Dyson that this thing is a complete look-alike rip-off of and the Dyson is still going strong.
@ellett Yeah I have to say people complain that Dyson is overpriced but you can sometimes get good deals. Pricing this Meh deal at $179 it seems someone has “Jumped the Shark.”
@ellett@pmarin People say they’re overpriced because they are. An almost comparable Dyson stick will cost you about triple this price, even on sale, for a single battery with a shorter runtime, a smaller dirt capacity, and fewer accessories included.
I’ve had three Shark vacuums over the past seven years (I’m a sucker for a good deal on an upgrade), and I haven’t seen a single failure yet. I also have a second-hand DC58 Animal, which the previous occupant left in my home because a failed sensor prevents it from running for more than a second or two at a time - it’s about five years old.
My current Shark, an AZ1000W, can clean my shaggiest carpet on medium. When shopping back in April, I also tested a Dyson 216041-01 (Ball Animal), and even on its highest setting the brush roll couldn’t spin through that carpet.
@Aspirant_Fool@pmarin We’ve had vastly different experiences. I’ve had two Sharks and they’ve both turned out to be POSs. Your performance specs must be for an older Dyson. My V10 has a large capacity bin and will suck up anything I use it on. Not cheap, although Costco prices are decent, but you get what you pay for.
Anyone know what the difference between this and the seemingly more popular IF281 is? I can’t find reviews for this IF285 but there are plenty of the IF281 and the specs seem identical.
We bought a refurbished one of these a month or two ago and it’s been great for quick cleanups. If you have messy kids or pets it’s really convenient to whip it out without worrying about cords. Two thumbs up!
@RedOak It has two operating modes but likely still lacks the suction one may expect from a traditional high end vacuum. You may find the need to lug out the corded beast from time to time (although we haven’t yet).
If this IF285 is the same as the IF281 then this would be called the Shark ION™ F80 MultiFLEX® Cordless Stick Vacuum because the Shark® IONFlex™ 2X DuoClean® Cordless Stick Vacuum is from the IF200 & IF250 Series…right? Or is Shark’s website toying with me?
So is the one you’re selling today the IONFlex or the MultiFLEX?
@zachdecker Yes, the 5 hour rule is in place in our domecile. At least that’s what the ants tell me.
Maybe the metaphor is that sharks eat gold fish too?!?!?
I almost bought the re-furb version of this on w00t a couple weeks ago, for the same price. Glad I held out, Meh to the rescue with a NEW for the same $
Got mine in. I went with two. So far I like them! No defects I could find.
I charged all 4 batteries, and then did as the instructions said and fully discharge them all. Using only the “dustbuster” mode with no attachments, all 4 batteries lasted right around 44 minutes to the dot before petering out. I’m quite impressed with that! I know it will be less once the floor unit is attached and all, but that’s still quite impressive.
Also, I can’t get over how they looks like some kinda laser plasma-y sci-fi weapons from a Halo or Mass Effect game. The design is REALLY cool.
@Bandrik I’m glad I read this, because I sure didn’t read the instructions.
I broke out my unit from my IRK this weekend and despite not needing another vacuum I really like it. I’ll have to take it out to the utility room to discharge it because it drives me dogs nuts even more than other vacuums.
@djslack You’re welcome! I’m not entirely convinced having them discharge a full cycle is necessary, but the instructions made it sounds like the circuitry needs that to properly calibrate the maximum and minimum charge the battery can hold. Maybe it helps the battery meter be more accurate, i don’t know.
But yeah, i discharged mine in another room with the door closed with a stopwatch timing them.
@Bandrik Thanks. I read the manual afterwards. My take is “after you initially charge the batteries, make sure you run them all the way down before you charge them again.”
I’m not convinced that running that motor for 45 minutes straight is all that good for it. Sure, you may vacuum for that long but more likely than not you cycle it on and off some. It may be fine for continuous duty at regular speed.
I know on the boost mode it gets pretty hot pretty quick, and it seems like the 1 minute duration would be all it could take. But apparently they’ll let you override that by starting again immediately or holding down the button.

EDIT: Dammit!
“My wife will love this for an anniversary gift” said no man still alive today.

@hchavers @lwmctz Same - I begged for a Dyson Animal for Christmas one year, because dogs. Still one of the best gifts I have ever gotten!
sucks#3
ugh, Meh selling a Shark Vac again
Must be shark week
@Mescolito it actually was last week. Meh missed it. Guess that’s the Meh way?

@cjrhoades Same specs, but ours comes with the precision dusting tool & extension hose
@troy Thanks. In for one.
@cjrhoades IF285 - IF281 = 4
There’s your difference.
@cinoclav
That kind of sarcasm normally gets rewarded around here. Starred.
You have to squeeze the trigger the whole time you’re using it? Ouch.
@katbyter what makes you say that? I don’t even see a trigger in the pictures.
@windfish113 it looks like you have to squeeze the activator button constantly rather than turn on a power button.
@katbyter @windfish113 no you don’t, it has a power button
Cordless shark do do do do do-do.
@davidgro No.
OH MY GOD THEY KILLED GLEN!!!
YOU BASTARDS!!!

@tracergod what about for non-“quick”, regular cleanups?
@tracergod excuse me while I whip this out
/giphy whip this out
@RedOak It has two operating modes but likely still lacks the suction one may expect from a traditional high end vacuum. You may find the need to lug out the corded beast from time to time (although we haven’t yet).
Got one off morningsave a few weeks back, so far wife loves it and batteries seem to last awhile
@fahrbio Are we still talking about a vacuum?
2 power packs, so today’s item has twice the suckage.
@mike808 but also takes up twice the space in the fridge.
You’re three days early- I had the eight for a vacuum cleaner. NOOOOOOO!!!
@sammydog01 that does actually suck.
@sammydog01 Blame the
meh staffgoatPS likely they have taken all our guesses and marked those days out (grin).
/giphy dirty dirty house
Meh telling your house so dirty one power pack not enough.
I’m confused…

Here are reviews for the 285 which appears to only differ with the attachments included and color.

Too late to edit. Here is some more information about this

That is one of the more gimmicky product names I have seen. Just missing an “ultra”.
Just when dirt thinks it’s safe to acumulate, Shark pulls you back in
@arfdawg
I would totally still eat those gold fish.
Even if they’re a little crumbly, they are still good in soups or can even be crumbled up more for some breading.
@zachdecker Yes, the 5 hour rule is in place in our domecile. At least that’s what the ants tell me.
Maybe the metaphor is that sharks eat gold fish too?!?!?
This seems like a good deal but I just hand wash my sharks instead of trying to suck the dirt off.
I’m holding out for the “Sharknado”.
Would this be viable to replace my current floor vac?
@lowlypeon Um…sure…I guess. What is your current floor vac?
@therealjrn Ironically, a model IF285 Shark IONFlex 2X DuoClean Cordless Ultra-Light Vacuum with 2 Power Packs.
I almost bought the re-furb version of this on w00t a couple weeks ago, for the same price. Glad I held out, Meh to the rescue with a NEW for the same $
The 2X and the picture of the two vacuums on the first image really makes it look like you get 2 vacuums for this deal… Or I am just a idiot.
@darkzrobe me too until I looked at the 3rd through last pics.
Got mine in. I went with two. So far I like them! No defects I could find.
