Selling or Recycling Office Furniture and Equipment
3Does anyone have advice on where to recycle or sell used office furniture (e.g. desks, cubicles, chairs)? What about tech items (like servers, network racks, Avaya VoIP phones, etc)? I think the business would like to recoup some of their expenses but if recycling is the single option, they’d prefer not to have to pay for the expense of it having to be carried away.
Local or national resources would be helpful. It’s going to be for multiple offices across the country.

If it comes down to recycling because you can’t sell it… Give it away?
@RiotDemon I am not sure we can. If we could, I think my coworkers would love to take stuff home. They need some sort of certificate where it says things won’t be in a landfill or something.
@njfan I mean I’d happily sign some sort of agreement that I would responsibly care for my adopted server and feed him plenty of electricity and if I was no longer able to, re-home or return him. And take appropriate action at his EOL. If there’s any way to write something up so the employees can take some that would satisfy the requirement lol.
I “recovered” an IBM server from circuit city when they closed that had dual socket 3.4 GHz Intel’s and a 6 bay hotswap array of 74GB 10K RPM drives. It was pretty dated then but We used it as a game server and a few other things. Last thing I was going to try years ago was to turn it into a server for the animal shelter but it’s way past that now. Thankfully the solid waste district takes ewaste and just sells it to some recycler vs it going in the dump.
@njfan @unksol I am still using a 1992 laser printer. My department was throwing it out for something newer, fancier and faster. So free to me. The paper tray is broken and won’t stay glued so I have to prop it up and it only does one thing - print. But it does that well and fortunately for me HP still makes the cartridges.
Rasmus auctions.
I have bought stuff from them in the past and they do all sorts of online auctions for buisness closings ect
@CaptAmehrican Ooo, very nice. Thank you!
@CaptAmehrican Wow!
Anyone here have a restaurant or catering business that needs some additional equipment (or maybe just a large home kitchen or patio)?

Closes in < two days – some items currently have 0 bids or bids < $1.
(You have to go to Virginia to pick up items – don’t know if they’ll quarantine you for two weeks, though.)
When I obsolete office furnishings I donate them to a local charity shop (in my case the Kiwanis organization). The organization has volunteers who come remove the stuff from the office and deliver it to the shop. They provide a donation receipt upon request which I can use as a deduction if I choose to.
Win for me as I do not have to store or transport the stuff, win for the charity because they get goods to stock the shop and raise funds. I’ve never bothered to write off the donations, but that is certainly an option for a bottom line minded company.
Pretty specific to north northwest washington, but this is where I go for used file cabinets, office chairs, etc. gbrosnw.com
@walarney We do have an office in Seattle which we are looking to eliminate. Thank you!
I see lots of office Furniture at our Local Habitat ReStore. (my brother outfitted a whole home office - Desk, Chair, Horizontal File Cabinet, Steel book case, etc… for under $100)
retail sites run by Habitat for Humanity, 100% Donations, all sales benefit Habitat, and their local projects.

@boc Thank you! They went the auction route for a couple of the offices.
Hey! Maybe you can look for companies in your area and try to offer them your furniture? Maybe for less price, but both sides will have a win-win situation
wisetekmarket.com for the electronics, habitat restore for the furniture.
Repurposed Materials may buy or take donations to avoid wasting resources [by having them be recycled], and then re-sell to someone who might otherwise buy new things.
