@Barc777@ItalianScallion@mediocrebot the AI did not do so bad (I think it intentionally mis-spells by the way). It did know Diogenes (of legend) was seeking someone with integrity, and being honest and noble. The point as I took the story was that there were none to be found.
@DavidChurchRN For once, I’m glad they use ordinary replaceable batteries. I’m going to keep a couple of these in my car. It’s likely that when I need to use them, I’ll want them to work asap. If an internal rechargeable battery has lost its charge, I’d be screwed. With regular batteries, I could carry a set or spares or even pop in to a convenience store and buy some.
@DavidChurchRN@ItalianScallion this is true. Especially a few notorious batches of battery-powered flashlights that quietly sucked all the power out of the batteries over a period of a few months. Some sold under a brand name by Costco, which left many of us scarred and distrusting.
Normally now in addition to a cheap door-pocket flashlight I usually have a small toolkit including either a Milwaukee or DeWalt light. And I have batteries for those to power the impact wrench or drill or whatever I might need. (I have had reason to actually need those, which might or might not be a good thing)
@DavidChurchRN The flashlight can probably be converted with a cheap plastic sleeve, assuming it’s got one of those holders for three AAA batteries. For the lanterns i don’t know.
I prefer rechargeable batteries, too. I’ve had a flashlight in the car for over a year. I check the battery every now and then, and it’s still got an almost full charge. I’m not worried about it going dead without use.
@DavidChurchRN@ItalianScallion If you shunt one battery (or all 3) with a small piece of heavy plastic, it will [help] prevent the batteries from leaking. Or losing charge. You’ve seen these shunts with any small devices you bought that arrive with included batteries. Lots of heat/cold temp cycles in a vehicle will hasten failure of the weakest cell. I use the edges from food vacuum-sealer bags/rolls that are about 3/8" wide, but you can use any similar pliable, durable, heavy plastic strip.
I tape a piece about 1-1/2 to 2" long to the battery, fold the loose end over the + tip of the battery, then insert to the battery compartment. If possible, it’s better still, to put the batteries in a tiny ziplock and store with the device. That way, no possibility of leaky cells damaging the battery compartment & connections.
@DavidChurchRN@drz@ItalianScallion
I have put some of my NiMh AA’s into a long-term storage emergency light, and they have maintained their charge for almost 2 years, so far, as checked by my battery check meter from American Science
& Surplus.
The secret is that I put them in so that they were all upside down to the intended orientation- making it impossible for any electrical circuit to be created/completed.
Does this make any sense, IDK, but so far it has worked for me.
The only caveat is to remember that you have done so, and switch them around before trying to use the light.
I forgot once and swore a blue streak for a couple of minutes before swapping the batteries out for new ones and recharging the ones that had been in it [unnecessarily].
@Barc777@ItalianScallion@narfcake@PooltoyWolf Given the polarizing nature of Fox I can probably propose some possible meanings, but just starting off with the “F” probably means it would be NSFW (though we seem to be more tolerant here…)
OTGH, the acronym tends to be used far more often for arrays of chip-on-board LEDs than for single-unit ones. I’ve seen SMD applied for that more often than COB. And that reminds me, I have a cheapass crap Farpoint all-plastic junk-driver 5000-lumen flashlight that I need to finish dismantling, so that I can replace the driver with something that doesn’t drain the pack to zero in two weeks. I had to cut the end off of the housing to get access to the battery pack, and it looks like I may have to engage in additional destructive measures to get the rest of it apart. (I hate electronic “soft” switches. Give me physically-disconnecting contacts anytime.)
The name dates to 1915, when William Fox, a Hungarian immigrant, left the fur and garment industry to start a motion picture company. The 1929 stock market crash, among other misfortunes, forced the Fox Film Corporation to merge with a competitor, Twentieth Century Pictures, to form 20th Century Fox in 1935.
How close are these to the ones sold a while ago, got a box of 6 or 12. They were the strangest design illuminated nothing just blinding when glanced at.
@edsa I have 2 lanterns just like the larger ones. Can confirm they’re only good for general illumination in a room (if you can get them high enough to avoid the blinding). When we have to use them I hang them from an existing fixture and comment that they let us see well enough not to trip or run into anything. Definitely not a good “work light”
@psushades I find that when all that’s needed is trip-hazard reduction, putting them near the floor also helps to reduce the glare issue. That skinny high-intensity hotspot can be really annoying.
@psushades@werehatrack Don’t know about these, but that matches what I’d expect. The cheap ones can be “harsh” and yet not light up an area very well. Better than nothing in a pinch. The floor idea seems good. Or drape something over it. Semi-transparent (what does that even mean?) Seems silly but it works (if light output is good enough).
Almost tempted to try anyway. The blue color would match my Tesla, and might be useful, unless the car was already on fire… in that case I’d need a blue fire extinguisher.
@AgentJay My sister says a person can never own too many flashlights (her her husband says you can never own too many screwdrivers… me it is probably you can never own too many cats - oh wait. My cats own me ).
@AgentJay@ItalianScallion@pmarin@Kidsandliz For me, not so much flashlights, but lights in general. My favorite aisle at the hardware store is the one with all the hanging lights - walking down it makes me happy! I sometimes consider getting an electrician to set up my hallway to hang about a dozen different beautiful hanging lamps so I can shower myself with light anytime I want.
For me, not so much flashlights, but lights in general.
Absolutely! Flashlights, lanterns, little flashlight things that are zipper pulls, strings of those tiny LEDs, and they can be electric or gas (isobutane, for camping).
@AgentJay@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@pmarin I guess the correct term is keychain flashlight, but I would attach mine to a zipper pull with a micro-carabiner or if the pull broke, attach it to where the zipper pull would have been. (Past tense because it had a soft rubber-like exterior that got sticky after a few years, so I threw it away.)

I’m not sure why “cob” is capitalized. It isn’t an acronym. It just means that the diodes are arranged like a corn cob.
@Barc777 COB = chip on board.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chip_on_board
@Barc777 @narfcake Correct!
@Barc777 @narfcake @PooltoyWolf Reminds me of (yet another) one of my pet peeves. The TV network is not “FOX”, it’s “Fox”. It’s not an acronym.

I have some of these from a prior sale. They are exceptionally ordinary, pretty much the essence of meh.
(Of course, this makes them much better than anything coughed up by Hell+Bowell.)
Harbor Freight for the win. Available every day and often on sale. And equally as Meh.
