I can probably count the number of shows I’ve stuck with on one hand. This one is SO good.
Shades of Groundhog Day - possibly Memento? But so much more intriguing.
I’ve watched it as part of resolution to watch some streaming shows while everyone is talking about them instead of a few years later. I liked it. I don’t quite get why so many people on Twitter were insisting she should get the Emmy. She’s very good but so are lots of other actresses in other shows.
So far the only other show I’ve been able to keep this resolution with was Homecoming. Is it a coincidence that Homecoming and Russian Doll are both half-hour shows? I don’t think so.
@Pamela Yeah - like that! Sometimes you see something that resonates with you and you want to share the experience with someone and compare notes.
Maybe Natasha Lyonne is getting credit for being a creator, writer, director, executive producer, and actor in the show?
(I don’t think she wrote any of the music, but who knows?? )
I always seem to watch things belatedly as well. My only other semi-timely one was the first season of Stranger Things.
@OnionSoup this seems to be a feature of most of the netflix originals in general… they sorta have to stretch out the story to meet the binge-able criteria netflix demands
I watched it. Reminded me of the OA (which I never finished), in that I get the feeling it was written as a series, without an end in mind. That feeling might have come from the misdirects and goes-nowhere tangents sprinkled in for flavor – not into that kind of thing.
I don’t regret watching it though, in total. Was funny.
@InnocuousFarmer supposedly they had a three season arc in mind before they first shot the OA. There is a plan for where the series is going and a planned end… Supposedly.
I really enjoyed it, even though I have had “Sweet birthday baby” stuck in my head for a week now. I like dark comedy and I liked the overall message, or what I interpret to be the message. The only problem is now I need to find something new to binge.
I saw the trailer last weekend. It looked interesting, added to watch list.
Yesterday afternoon I fired it up and streamed away. The first 3 or 4 eps were interesting. Enough to compel me to continue.
That’s where it started to go flat. By ep 8 I was struggling. By the end of the series I was just glad it was over. It was feeling like it was chasing it’s tail, struggling to get enough episodes for a full season.
Maybe this just isn’t ideally suited for binging? I admit, Lyonne’s character was beginning to grate on me a bit by the end, so maybe this is one I should have taken in doses.
@ruouttaurmind - I watched one or two episodes at a time. Don’t have the patience for bingeing. Maybe that made the difference. I liked the metaphysical aspects, and uncovering clues. I’ll admit I did a little googling over the significance of the book. There are different ideas - it shed more light.
There is talk of additional seasons, I can’t imagine where it could go from here.
I guess that’s the point.
@ruouttaurmind I think I only have one episode left… I don’t binge… I pace out my shows.
I think the show gets better when the guy joins in. The star character irritated me more in the beginning, but less as the show has persisted.
I like that it gets deeper than just “ha-ha we’re taking drugs, how funny” at the beginning. It gets better and the characters show they have rounded personalities, not just all sleezeballs by the end of the show.
@Kidsandliz@ruouttaurmind Pretty sci-fi. Each day she sheds her skin and becomes a smaller copy. By the 5th episode, she was around 3 feet tall. I wonder how far this will go…like Ant Man in the quantum realm kind of thing…
I’m in progress, and it’s pretty good. I also like that they’re half hour episodes. I don’t know much scripts differ between 30 and 60 minute programs, but it the show reminds me of “Nurse Jackie,” another New York based 30 minute program.

@OnionSoup
I finished watching this afternoon, and I thought the same thing. Then I thought it could be like “American Horror Story” with the same actors, but a different story. Or maybe it can be the same story but with the focus set on other characters.
@eonfifty@OnionSoup Yes, I think I can get behind the AHS approach. Same cast, different plot would be good. And this time, without the annoying tagline and repetitive soundtrack.
That’s essentially what Black Mirror did. Lots of returning actors in different roles, several carryover themes… yes, I think I can support this idea.
@OnionSoup There was a scene with an empty apartment, so I’m assuming the clothes in the closets and dressers were gone as well…
Unless you mean off their bodies. In which case I assume this is due to social norms and content rating restrictions. Shame, really. Bit of nudity ain’t never hurt nobody.
@medz of course I was talking about clothes on bodies. It ruined the immersion to not have people semi naked. It was unrealistic to me that random things would go missing except clothing on people.
I couldn’t get immersed in the story line… It all seemed realistic, the lack until things started disappearing, but never people’s clothes. Then meh… All totally unrealistic.
10/10 story if people lost clothes.
/I am of course just joking incase my tone wasn’t obvious. Good show.
I don’t get Netflix. Lend me your password?
@sammydog01 No Netflix? I don’t know what I would do without Netflix now.
@mfladd I watch Dark Shadows on Amazon Prime. Almost 1000 episodes to go!
@sammydog01 Ok, you might be a while with that series.
@sammydog01
I think T-Mobile customers have Netflix thrown in for free.
@sammydog01 - You bet! I’ll be happy to share! Meet me in the back alley in 20 minutes.
It’s on my to watch list!
@mfladd - Hope it’s not too far down your list. I guess I’d call it a dark comedic mystery? Really worth watching!
I saw the trailer when I launched ‘flix this morning. Added to my list for next weekend. Looking decent if the trailer is any indication.
Yeah. It was ok.

Russian dolls are so full of themselves
@hachover
The first few episodes were rather mediocre, but it gets better. I’m at about episode 5.
@OnionSoup this seems to be a feature of most of the netflix originals in general… they sorta have to stretch out the story to meet the binge-able criteria netflix demands

OA was good but sooooooo many plot holes.
@OnionSoup Plot holes!
That’s what I meant. Misdirection and plot holes. Tangents can be nice as long as they don’t have false implications.
@InnocuousFarmer @OnionSoup I actually loved the OA… until the last episode. I’m hoping the first episode of the second season changes my mind.
I really enjoyed it, even though I have had “Sweet birthday baby” stuck in my head for a week now. I like dark comedy and I liked the overall message, or what I interpret to be the message. The only problem is now I need to find something new to binge.
@LadyLeela - omg, that song! Gotta get up, gotta get out . . .
Watched it. Enjoyable.

Russian Doll. This. Right?
@Kidsandliz Yes, actually. That is a summary of the plot right there. Truly.
@Kidsandliz @ruouttaurmind
@Kidsandliz @ruouttaurmind Pretty sci-fi. Each day she sheds her skin and becomes a smaller copy. By the 5th episode, she was around 3 feet tall. I wonder how far this will go…like Ant Man in the quantum realm kind of thing…
@medz @ruouttaurmind Now that is a hoot that what I uploaded as as joke actually is related to the plot, sort of anyway.
I’m in progress, and it’s pretty good. I also like that they’re half hour episodes. I don’t know much scripts differ between 30 and 60 minute programs, but it the show reminds me of “Nurse Jackie,” another New York based 30 minute program.

I haven’t seen last episode yet, so maybe something changes… But…
You know Netflix are thinking “this did really well, let’s make a season 2”
To me, even though I like the show, I can’t see season 2 being a good idea. “Oh no! We’re stuck in a loop on a different day now”. It wouldn’t work.
@OnionSoup

@ruouttaurmind
I can still hear that song
Spoiler… Don’t read if not more than about 4 episodes in…
So you know how things and people slowly start disappearing after a while… I couldn’t help wondering… Why isn’t anyone’s clothes disappearing?
Just me?
@OnionSoup There was a scene with an empty apartment, so I’m assuming the clothes in the closets and dressers were gone as well…

@OnionSoup I think of the person is a single item. Clothes included.
