Farewell, Onkyo Electronics.
https://m.slashdot.org/story/399852
Onkyo also owned Pioneer Electronics, so two well-known brands are disappearing. That means the up-market Pioneer Elite brand as well.
The old Woot regularly sold the discontinued prior-year Pioneer receiver models, and the Onkyo has appeared here on Meh as well.
The biggest feature of these mid-range receivers was for cable management and remote consolidation. They will be missed. There are rumors Denon may be interested (an offer to buy Onkyo in 2019 failed).

When my wife and I used to do student tours in Greece we would always make a DVD of the highlights for the kids. On one trip our son met us for part of the trip while on a break from college and he and one of the other students ran a foot race across the stadium in Olympia. Of course we had to use that track for the background music!

R.I.P. Andy Fletcher, Depeche Mode Founding Member Dead at 60

“We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member, and bandmate Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher,” Depeche Mode announced in a statement on Thursday, May 26th.
No cause of death has been released.
The origins of Depeche Mode date back in the late 1970s, when Fletcher and schoolmate Vince Clarke began playing music together. They soon linked up with Marin Gore to form a synth group named Composition of Sound, and then, after recruiting David Gahan to sing vocals, rebranded themselves as Depeche Mode. Clarke left the group following the release of their debut album, 1981’s Speak & Spell, and was replaced by Alan Wilder.
Fletcher was the only Depeche Mode without a songwriting credit, and did not sing in concert. In D.A. Pennebaker’s 1989 documentary about the band, Fletcher famously joked about his musical contributions, saying: “Martin’s the songwriter, Alan’s the good musician, Dave’s the vocalist, and I bum around.”
As a member of Depeche Mode, Fletcher appeared on all 14 of the band’s studio albums, from 1981’s Speak & Spell through 2017’s Spirit. He also participated in every one of the group’s world tours. For his contributions, Fletcher and the rest of Depeche Mode were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

Alan White, the longtime drummer for prog-rock legends Yes, has died at age 72. The veteran musician, who was also a member of John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band, passed away on Thursday (May 26th) after a “brief illness,” according to a Facebook posting by his family.
White became a member of Yes in 1972 and remained their drummer until his passing. He joined the band for their tour in support of 1972’s Close to the Edge, replacing original drummer Bill Bruford, and made his recording debut with the band on 1973’s Tales from Topographic Oceans. He played on a total of more than 40 studio and live albums released by Yes, including their most recent full-length studio effort, 2021’s The Quest (the band’s 22nd studio album).
Prior to joining Yes, White was recruited by John Lennon to be part of the ex-Beatle’s Plastic Ono Band, and performed on eight songs on Lennon’s Imagine album, including the iconic title track. He also played drums and piano on the stand-alone Lennon single “Instant Karma,” and contributed drums to fellow ex-Beatle George Harrison’s album All Things Must Pass

I have reached an age at which so many of the iconic bands I grew up with are losing members right and left…
Ranan Lurie, Israeli war hero and world peacemaker who set records as the world’s most widely syndicated political cartoonist; father of Rod Lurie
https://www.dailycartoonist.com/index.php/2022/06/09/ranan-lurie-rip/
I’m going to call BS on the very first attribution, as if it was their primary character or achievement of most importance. Why else put it first?
There was nothing in the writeup that mentioned any such “war” participation, nor “hero” status to justify the claim, much less being the very first thing one reads about the man.
I am not at all criticizing his peace efforts, nor his regard as a cartoonist or artist.
I am criticizing the press infatuation and frankly, “yellow journalism” in its baseless glorification of “war”, regardless of the merits that only the “victors” of whatever war is being referred to can have “heroes”.
I doubt they would use the same reverence for slain Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh with an equivalent introduction as a “Palestinian war hero and journalist”. Please someone prove me wrong.
@mike808 That was my bad, if you look again at the very top of the article, they actually listed “editorial cartoonist & political caricaturist” as his primary descriptors.
This piece is excerpted from a much more comprehensive obituary in the NY Times, but since they have a pay wall, i linked to this site. I believe that because this is a cartoonists site, they concentrated more on his career, rather than his complete bio.
I assume the Times was using the qualifier “Israeli” to indicate that he is regarded as a war hero in Israel, which i always consider a subjective status in any case.
I found a more detailed obit that isn’t behind a pay wall that you might find more informative.
https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2022-06-10/ty-article/.premium/world-renowned-israeli-cartoonist-ranan-lurie-dies-at-90/00000181-4ca5-d968-afad-5de7b6870000
@ircon96 I just found it a very odd way to start an obit and then provide nothing to support the attribution that was so important, they felt it needed to be mentioned as the very first thing you learn about the man.
TBH, they could have completely omitted that phrase and it wouldn’t have changed anything, other than not asking the WTF is this even here? Lousy editing, IMHO.
