Removed from the bowel of our 20 yr old, blind cat this afternoon.
9Vet gave it to us because we chose not to send it out for testing. If it’s cancerous, there’s not much we can do at this point, anyway.
He was taken to emergency back in July to get an enema. He has back problems and arthritis and it’s hard for him to go. Daily lactulose and every other day subQ fluids have kept him regular since then.
This morning, he went in the master bath shower (super easy to clean up) and scooted like dogs do. I cleaned him off and the wash towel had blood on it. I figured he just scraped himself pooping.
But it kept bleeding. So, the vet said to bring him in. And here we are. Right now, he’s still in the carrier, on the bed, with pillows around him so he doesn’t knock the carrier over. He’s still pretty loopy from the anesthesia.

Poor baby. Hope recovery is uneventful
@tinamarie1974 Thank you.
My heart wishes you were facing an easier time w this kitty.
I’m glad you have each other for now.
@f00l Thank you. I have a chicken breast cooking in the instant pot for him right now. He won’t eat it all, i’ll part it out for him (and the others), but I hope he likes it.
That growth looks just like the pictures of polyps.
Wow, that’s really something. I’ve nursed a number of geriatrics through their later years - one had most of his large intestine removed because the muscle reflex to move things along was failing and blocking up and developing polyps, so I’m familiar with that part of the kitty anatomy.
Especially with the old ones, you’ll always do whatever you can to take care of them, because you know they know you’re doing it and you can see in them the expression that they are grateful for your care.
Wow - poor kitty! 20 years old is impressive; I had one live to be 19.
@Kyeh We got Mario on July 5th, 2012. His original forever home owner died in a freak auto accident when Mario was around eight years old. Her widower and kids took care of him after that.
The widower was good friends with my best friend’s husband. He met another woman who he ended up marrying (according to my friend, no one in their group liked her) and when they moved into a new house in the foothills of a southern california town, she decided he would be an outdoor only cat.
Foothills=coyotes. Twelve year old cat, new neighborhood, outside. My friend (who would catsit for him) called me up on July 4th, sobbing that he needs a home and her husband says no. We said we’d take him (she’s in the Ontario, Ca area, we’re in San Diego). She brought him down the next day.
The little dog they had was let into their new backyard one night and even though they’d been warned about coyotes and six foot fences, forgot about him. They found his collar and remains the next morning. In the backyard.
Mario has been a really, super awesome cat. He went blind a few years ago from hypertension. We’ve finally got his meds right. We hoped maybe his sight would come back, sometimes it does, I understand, but it didn’t happen.
To describe his walks through the house? Think of a robot vacuum. You know, how it bumps into things.
We’ll do our best to make his time left as comfortable as possible. He purrs on occasion and loves Purina treats.
WORKER BEES! HERCULES! TURKEY GREASE! AWESOME!
@Kyeh Our oldest lived to be 23.
@lisaviolet How lucky for him he ended up with you! Yeah, we have coyotes around here too, and the occasional mountain lion; I’ve even heard of people losing their cats to owls.
It’s so hard when they get old and frail; I hope he does get a little more enjoyable time with you.
23!!! That’s amazing!
On the way home from the vet’s, I said excitedly to my husband “hey, we can finally change the bedding!”
He spends the majority of his time on the bed and it’s been longer than I’d like to admit that the sheets and spread were changed. I sleep on top of the spread with just a fleece blanket because I get too warm.
It was nice to strip said bed. Real nice. That green spread is in the laundry room now.
And Mario is back in his spot on the bed.
@lisaviolet So cute. He looks quite content.
@Kyeh @lisaviolet Oh that poor dog!
@Bretterson @lisaviolet My sister said there was a coyote stalking around her condo area. Some neighbor guy took his girlfriend’s little dog out without a leash, lost sight of it, and it was never seen again. She never walks her dog without a leash, luckily, because around that time she got home and told her housemate she’d seen the coyote - and her housemate said “IT’S RIGHT BEHIND YOU!” And it was!
I hope your poor kitty will feel more comfortable after having that huge thing removed. I hope it wasn’t cancer so that he can recover and have a pleasant remainder of the rest of his life. Hope your and your sweetie have plenty of time to continue enjoying each other.
@Kidsandliz Thanks. He’s really a great cat. Five days of pain drugs. He finally settled down after we went to bed last night.
@Kidsandliz @lisaviolet poor baby! I’m glad he’s resting. I know how close you can get to your kitty (s), I really love mine. They give you total unconditional love…
Awww hugs and snuggles for him And for you taking such good care of him
