Depends on the friends and the event. Fancy, pork loin with roasted potatoes, salad, carrots and home made rolls. Something less formal burgers and dogs on the grill with roasted veggies and some adult beverages
Which friends? Different friends like different foods. However I have been on a kick to learn pate a choux dough so probably ice cream filled cream puffs for dessert
@CaptAmehrican choux is much easier than people think. As long as you follow the instructions like not opening the oven door in the middle to look at it, they come out easy.
I made some with just fresh whipped cream and they were so delicious.
Now I need to make some but I don’t have any cream… I guess I could eat them with ice cream. Super healthy.
Salad is just too much work. You know? You gotta get the ingredients, wash everything, dry everything, mix it together, dress it. Then I go to eat the salad, now I have to make a small copy of the salad on my fork. For every bite. I have to be like, “Okay. Lettuce, onion, cherry tomato, cherry… Forget it. Mushroom, pepper. Gotta make another small salad. Here we go. Lettuce…” “How’s your salad?” “It’s 17 small salads that I had to make.” That’s probably why in a restaurant the waiter’s like, “Are you still working on that salad?” “You’re goddamn right I’m working. I’m exhausted. Take this thing away from me.”

Really, though, I was just making a Simpsons reference.
Enough food for 18. Either hot roast beef sandwiches or bbq burgers and dogs (with lots of sides like home made salsa and chips, macaroni salad, and potato salad), Italian (pasta, meatballs, and sausage), or Mexican (tacos or fajitas). At least two home made desserts.
Mexican! Fajitas, Burritos, Tacos. With all the fixin’s. Salsas, Pico de Gallo, Rice, Beans. And margaritas, too!
All made from scratch. (Yes, it’s sad but true, I even make my own refried beans from dried beans.)
If I had that many people over, it would most likely be a pretty informal event.
Meaning most likely we would be doing party food like chips and dips, wings, etc. But since the question clearly said “dinner” and I would be serving, I will say grilling out burgers and dogs.
Sous vide leg of lamb (medium rare) with rosemary (fresh from garden), garlic, onions, and butter… then finished on the grill.
Great northern beans, with finely chopped onions and mushrooms, plus the liquid from the lamb when I cut open the sous vide bag.
Fresh salad (Romaine hearts (bought) with cucumbers, tomatoes and gr. peppers (from the garden)
Cheese course with 6 different cheeses served with croissant and butter
Fresh peach cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream covered with a bourbon-peach jam sauce (with some amaretto added for good measure) then a dollop of whipped cream.
Dinner served with a nice Cote du Rhône, dessert served with coffee.
Meal lasted about 2 hours.
Attendees were 2 women born in France, one guy from Lebanon, SWMBO (born in Germany while parent stationed overseas…) and a dual national Franco-American born in US of French parents…me)
Average age was about … wait I better not say…
@tinamarie1974
mostly Frang-lish… French phrases with English words thrown in, or straight French then straight English. SWMBO doesn’t “speak” French, but can usually follow the conversation due to 44 years of exposure and her Latin teacher background. Anything that doesn’t seem to click with her gets repeated in English usually. Makes for a pretty interesting meal!
(BTW the Lebanese guy speaks fluent French, and can hold his own in several other tongues as well)
@macromeh
If you have a chance to sous vide it I would HIGHLY recommend you try it again. At $25 a piece of meat the last thing you want is to overcook it!
@tinamarie1974 It truly was. The other French lady (besides my mom…) just lost her husband right before the whole CoViD thing blew up, so she has been really cooped up. It was a great diversion for all involved.
We will do it again sometime, but maybe a touch less elaborate… or maybe not!
@chienfou this is prob what I’d make-
Pretty boring but whatever.
Lasagne or a fun pasta. Prob lasagne so there’d be lots of leftovers. Caesar salad made with delicious homemade dressing, Garlic Bread Fantastique (a good recipe I found on allrecipes years back, and for dessert a skillet chocolate chip cookie in a cast iron pan served with vanilla ice cream.
Also, doing a nice prime rib on the old rotisserie Is fun too.

@narfcake You don’t win friends with salad.
@Limewater @narfcake
I’d be won.
@Limewater @narfcake @f00l it all depends what’s on the salad…
@f00l @moonhat @narfcake
Really, though, I was just making a Simpsons reference.

F-friends? What are these friends you speak of
@lichme a friend is someone who you try to convince on Facebook that your life is better than theirs and you’re more accomplished.
I just can’t think of a reason why one might invite such a person to dine with them instead of just sending them a picture of your food.
@lichme isn’t carl your friend, Lich?
@moonhat No, he tried to eat my hands
@carl669 Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarl!
@lichme @moonhat
liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiich!

Yes definitely

Trick question. Nobody old enough to cook for five friends actually has five friends.
@Kenbo
Boy what an ageist thing to say … (see below)
@chienfou Ageist, yes. Delusional, no.
Just did this for lunch for 5 yesterday in fact:
Dinner served with a nice Cote du Rhône, dessert served with coffee.
Meal lasted about 2 hours.
Attendees were 2 women born in France, one guy from Lebanon, SWMBO (born in Germany while parent stationed overseas…) and a dual national Franco-American born in US of French parents…me)

@chienfou so what language did you speak at dinner?
@chienfou Oh man, just reading the menu got my mouth watering! I haven’t done leg of lamb for way too long.

by the way… When do we get to see YOUR answers to these questions @Moonhat ??
@chienfou I have answered a lot of them I think. I will do this one.
@chienfou this is prob what I’d make-

Water!
@cinoclav Clavvy, what is it? It’s not showing up
@moonhat I see it just fine. It wasn’t linked, it’s a picture I uploaded so you should be able to see it. How about this:
@cinoclav well sure, NOW it’s visible
BBQ.
Actually, I got alla this pasta to use up.
Cajun Penne with fire-roasted bell peppers.
