Production / editing equipment and software (photography)
12As I know there are more than a few of my fellow Mehmbers that either work in video production / broadcast and / or dabble as a hobby (also in photography) - I have a decent bit of sound and video equipment / editing software I need to liquidate prior to January 1st to avoid paying property tax, and it isn't stuff I want to hang on to, but it is really nice brand new or seldom used (as in once or twice) gear . . . everything from excess camera bodies, glass (some vintage), mics and even a small jib, friction slider and grip stands to over $4,000 (retail) of brand new shrink-wrapped Digital Juice canvases, wipes and transitions, reveals, lower thirds, sound fx, etc. - tons of their software - most all for Premiere / After Effects (a wee small bit for Vegas [and probably even a never regged copy of Vegas too]) and all will work with the archived versions of their Juicer which you can find online (if you didn't transition to their online system last year - BTW, unless you know exactly what you're doing and what this is, you don't want it). Anyway - I'm willing to blow the stuff out on the cheap just to get rid of it and I thought I'd see if anyone here might be interested before it hits CL or feeBay. If there's enough (any?) interest from the community, I can either 1) throw up a delineated list here over the next several days or 2) you may email me directly at kcrgb@hushmail.com - Thanks!

I'm a dabbler. I'd like to see a list, started to email you but if you're going to make a list might as well share it here unless for some reason that's not kosher.
+1 for list.
I'd like the list too - though more for curiosity.
Another +1 because I need to spend less at B&H.
I'll be a +1, even if just for my own curiosity.
I'll work up a comprehensive list and post it here in the next couple of days. It's long, please be patient. (I may separate by category and complete the postings over a couple of days).
Definitely interested; I've subscribed to this post. I'll shoot you an email, too.
Your ideas intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter
@pavlov Glass...Mics...Canvases...
what do you have?
@Pavlov I'm into photography and hoping to get some more equipment - lenses/flashes/etc. Anything on your list that would fit a Canon would surely interest me - it sounds like most of what you have is for video though.
Please @ mention me when you post your list :)
i'd be interested in some Nikon glass if'n you's has any.
@carl669 No Nikon glass, sorry - but I do have a bit of pretty sweet, amazingly sharp m42 screw mount vintage glass you might possibly be interested in if you shoot in manual (or for video use on DSLR) - the DOF is razor thin (if you want it) and the bokeh is breathtakingly beautiful. They are, as I am sure you know, easily adapted with any number of rings you can find on the cheap on eBay or Amazon.
@Pavlov Alright, time to break out the Spotmatic!
@brhfl One of the better, more reliable cameras ever to be mass produced, IMHO. The Super-Takumar glass for these cameras (especially those with the radioactive Thorium) yield superb image rendition on modern DSLR that you just can't duplicate in post. For video work on say, an APS-C Canon body, or a BMCC, or even a (micro) 4/3rd's body, they're just astounding. I just have, well, a problem when it comes to buying glass and need to pare down - plus I'm going to pay tax on some of these lenses that may end up being more than the lens is worth in the secondary market based on the odd and antiquated valuation / depreciation schedule in my State.
@Pavlov Yep, well said. I was just barely kidding – I think I have 3 Spotties as well as 2 Fujis that take m42.
I'm having a list worked up - will post in three stages: Software / hardware, then camera bodies and glass, etc. along with sound, and then studio miscellany (lighting, jibs, etc.)
So is "Glass" the cool way to say lens?
@medz yes. and instead of 'camera body', i say 'limbless torso'.
@medz Technically, all camera lenses are photographic objectives. Generally, when people say (or write) "glass" they are typically differentiating a preference for actual coated glass (and usually also metal mounts), and not plastic (such as that found in Canon's "nifty-fifty" - which BTW, is a hell of a decent lens for the money and for being plastic). "Glass" also differentiates from specialty objectives, such as pinhole, etc. - when you say "glass" you generally mean actual glass element(s) contained within an objective.
@medz This should answer any questions you might have:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Glass
@Pavlov Never heard it called the "nifty-fifty", but that's an awesome lens. To get down to 1.4 was not worth a few hundred $ extra for me.
It's plastic though, huh?
@luvche21 Nifty / Thrifty Fifty . . . Yes, it is plastic. Stopped down, it is a remarkable lens, considering it sells for ~$100.
@Pavlov I've definitely gotten my $100 out of it too over the last few years.
But since it's so awesome, I really don't want to spend more on a different lens considering it will be much more than $100
Totally in. Looking for software solutions to dress up a 4 year time-lapse.
I haven't a clue about what you are talking about, @Pavlov, but I do like to read lists!
@Barney
@Pavlov Now that's a list I can understand!
@Pavlov - I am with @Barney on this one. LOL
@Pavlov @Barney Barney's top ten list (backwards).
@sligett Anyway you look at it, purple is number one.
Cant't wait to see your list, especially the vintage!
Any prime lenses? I'm shooting on a Mark II and III and a 7D. I'm looking for a 50 mm and anything approaching fisheye.
@irishbyblood Yes. The listing is going to take a few days to compile, I hope to have it up this weekend, I'll tag you when it is posted.
For Canon, I do know that I will be letting go my Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* ($3,500 range - NIB sealed), my Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 Apo Planar T* ZE ($4,000 range, open box, mounted for one shoot) and my Canon EF 50mm F/1.0 L USM ($5,000 range - she's absolutely MINT [purchased when they discontinued in 2000]). I may have some lesser L primes and assorted manufacturer EF mount primes as I go through things after the studio sends me the final list and I make my cuts.
@Pavlov Thank you. I'm sorry you have to sell it, but maybe the good news is your property value skyrocketed along with the tax.
I'm not used to L series being described as "lesser", but in the company of Zeiss it sure is! I've got an L series 50mm, but not the F/1.0....jeez man, you've got some really, really nice stuff.
I was a broadcaster for 20 years, local/national and now just consider myself a storyteller for my current employer. Back in the day I did a lot of sports freelancing, mostly as camera. Lots of NCAA basketball, hockey, MLB, NASCAR and Indycar and associated feeder series.
@irishbyblood We fully transitioned stills to medium format this year (Phase One) and I can't ever see going back to DSLR full-time for still image capture. That said, I'm not going to throw out all my Canon gear yet, either. DSLR will still have a place here for some things, and you'll have to pry my workhorse Canon EF Cinema Prime Lenses from my cold, dead hands. The C100 Mark II with a Ninja 2 gets used and requested almost as much as our Arri rigs - hell, the C100 is even spec'd on the bid sheet by some clients due to the cost savings over using Arri on a lot of commercial work.
I don't have to sell, but I really don't need to keep a lot of this stuff either (and a lot of it is either duplicated or one off that was used once and never used again). For the longest time we would keep most of our of gear as personal property between myself and the other major stakeholder and rent it to the corporation, but the tax man got wise and the accountant says we need to convert the property to the S-corp. It is a mess, and if I can limit the burden on the corporation, I'm better off for it in the end. So instead of migrating some property to the corporation at the end of this fiscal year, I'd rather just liquidate it now, as personal property.
Yes, some of the gear is really nice, but I have Focal brand (the old K-Mart house brand) lenses I need to re-home too . . . it runs the gamut around here. There will be stuff on the list that might be a mortgage to some people, and there will be $10 and $20 items also. I'm hoping to post a comprehensive list this weekend some time, Monday latest.
@irishbyblood I've been wanting to get into sports production for a while now, just as a side gig, but haven't made any good connections for that. In my 8 years of local TV I've done just about all you can behind the camera except produce, though, so I'm pretty versatile. One co-worker put my name in to a company he used to freelance with, but they were already fully staffed and haven't brought me in for anything.
@Pavlov Love the medium format output. The transition had to be costly, and all of the excess gear now...wow. I apologize for making assumptions about the tax thing! Those Cinema primes...dang. It must be a joy shooting with them. My employer has slashed my budget every year now since the "great dslr transition" of around 2010. I feel fortunate though to have the collection of Mark II and III bodies and L series lenses that we have. And a nice Kessler-Crane slider. I just like being able to combine my love of storytelling/creativity with a passion for the technology. Maybe one day an Arri or a Red will be a possibility, who knows.
@jqubed I wish I could help you! I've been out of sports production for 15 years now, and most of my contacts have retired or moved on as well. My only suggestion is that if you are passionate about doing it, use your ability and resources to find the people in the companies doing crewing and talk to them, hound them. Don't take no, offer to be a runner or maybe even shadow someone during setup and strike. Stay at it, be flexible and make friends with these folks. It can be a great deal of fun. The stories from the road I have...Good luck to you :-)
If you have time, make a copy of the list and keep it in a safe place.

Probably even your cheap is beyond my expensive since you'd likely only have really high end stuff... but I am looking for a used decent digital camera, preferably with interchangeable lenses and a flash. Up until slide film went away I was using my 1978 Olympus OM1 with several lenses and loved that thing (would like to sell that - the suggested places someone mentioned a bunch of threads ago aren't buying as they have enough of these). Now I have a 7 or 8 year old simple point and shoot digital which is nearly like owing what I had as a kid which was a Kodak point and shoot except now I can take photos and not have to pay for developing...
@Kidsandliz I've got a Panasonic kit (camera, 2 lenses and external flash) on the list that was purchased for a specific shoot which you might really like - and it is both affordable and of very good quality. I'll email you later this week or over the weekend as I finalize things.
@Pavlov Thanks... Hopefully I will sell some of the my stuff on craigslist by then. Unless you'd like an antique quilt in trade? I have 4 I am trying to sell along with a christmas (snowflakes) new, never used non-antique one (LL Bean one I think).
@Kidsandliz I would assume KEH was one of the aforementioned suggested places, but I'll just throw that out there (again) as a place to offload photo gear. An alternative idea would be finding an OM group on Flickr or even just an amateur/student film group, see if there's anyone in need of a deal on such a thing. They're wonderful cameras!
@brhfl Can't remember where I called/emailed. I will check them again. Thanks for your suggestions.
@Kidsandliz And if nobody is ultimately willing to buy it… In the holiday spirit, a local community college or high school might need cameras for students who can't afford their own. I've offloaded quite a bit of equipment this way myself, because I was so thankful to have these resources when I was young.
You gotta 4X5 digital film back to get ridof mehbe?
@cranky1950 No, sorry.
@Pavlov How about Speedotron Black Line Stuff?
@cranky1950 No, sorry again - I'll probably have some Paul C. Buff stuff we don't use any longer.
@Pavlov Nah man, too much invested in the other stuff. Thanks anyway. Hope your house cleaning goes well.
@cranky1950 Thanks - it is going well already, the Canon 50mm F/1.0 L USM I mentioned above has already sold to a member here (offer accepted of $4,750) and I mentioned Buff and several emails have jumped all over that - so the Alien Bees will probably sell prior to me having a chance to list them - I need to finish the list quickly so everyone can see it . . . I'm working on it as fast as I can!
Note to self: next time make the damn list first.
Do any of your cameras have pagination? If so, count me out.
@phatmass Fuck pagination. FIRE HOSE all the way!
@Pavlov @phatmass
@carl669 UHF?
@luvche21 yep
@carl669 I tried really hard to find a good one of Conan the Librarian (since I'm a librarian...) but this one will have to do:
I had NO IDEA so many in the Meh community were involved in still/motion production. Or maybe the community is just a heck of a lot larger than I ever imagined.
@irishbyblood I'm still looking for a super rich Catholic Mehican willing to donate to my website--so it's not THAT large.
@phatmass If you find one ask them to throw a few dollars my way to my gofundme please. I think you are looking on the wrong site for rich people though. Sure there may be a few since many people like deals, but I seriously doubt you will find very many based on all the 2 star, maybe if we are lucky 3 star, stuff that gets sold here LOL
I apologize that this thread went so long without an update.
Long story short - I had an inquiry about a lens I had listed above and then subsequently sold it - my Canon EF 50mm F/1.0 L USM - to someone that saw the posting here who contacted me via email. Sale went fine, then had issues with recipient claiming damage upon delivery.
It has been an extraordinary struggle cleaning up the mess and finally earlier this afternoon I got a call that the insurance company had settled - so both of us are made whole in the deal. I still do not know the disposition of the lens in all actuality as only the adjuster has examined it (I don't even know if the adjuster took possession of it from the buyer after he examined the packing material and the lens itself). And frankly, I'm done caring. It was a complete clusterfuck.
So, selling items such as this via this venue may not be the best idea.
I'm off on vacation and then travelling for a couple of months for business - I'll probably just convert the remainder of the property to business use.
Best wishes to all for a wonderful holiday.
@Pavlov Sorry to hear things didn't work out the way you had hoped they would.
Thanks for coming back to the thread and finishing it off, and for the original opportunity.
@dashcloud In hindsight, I would have been better off putting the items in our eBay store and then posting a link here with an offer of a discount for Mehmbers that won / bought the item giving them a a code for a percentage off to use during checkout. It would have provided layered, third party insulated buyer and seller protection. As it is, the one sale worked out in the end, but you're right - not exactly in the manner I had hoped. As it is, the issues of cleaning up this one transaction pretty much bogged down the process moving forward with any others . . . Live and learn.
