It’s been about a month and a half since we left our sticks n bricks home and hit the road for a year or two (or more?) in an RV. There’s something to be said for having your bed and (some of) your stuff and your pets with you as you travel and thus far, that something is “WTF broke now?” I have been assured by old hands at this that it will get better.
@LinnE I did that about 20 years ago on a “New motorhome” and yes, there were an amazing number of items on the to-fix list. Luckily most were minor. Best way to get them fixed was to go to the factory which was 2000 miles away, which we did because it was a good excuse for a trip (and why else would anyone go to Alabama?..)
but over time you either fix the things or learn to live with how things work or how to make them work well enough to work for you, so it does get better.
If I can work it out (time and logistics) always the train. I love trains. Otherwise planes. I hate driving long distances, especially as the driver. 90 minutes is my max before I need a break when in a car, but no one else wants that so I’m stuck for hours.
I know exactly how I’d like to travel long distance. But since we’re fresh out of Saturn V’s, I’m fresh out of luck.
I’d settle for a Concorde, though, for lesser distances.
being from rhode island, long distance is anything beyond twenty minutes. we still go by car. probably the longest drive is to see my family which can take up to two hours one way if there’s traffic. i hate every second of it but it’s worth it for the time i get to spend with them. (36 today and i’ve never not woken up at my parents house on christmas!)
longer than that? don’t know, wouldn’t be interested.
@chienfou Because I’d probably sell out Amtrak for Delta >.>
For real though, it’s comparing apples and oranges. The plane will get you there much faster, but the train will give you much better food and service, and the scenery is better.
@PooltoyWolf One of my favorite train trips was Rome to Paris with a school group. All the kids had never been on a train before, much less on a sleeper. Since I spoke French the steward put my wife and I in a separate space and brought us a bottle of Champagne… Good times!
well what is long distance to a person? we take our dog with us so we use our car for trips. we just did florida so it was about 1250 miles one way. the very seldom trips without our dog are via plane.
Shouldn’t the third choice have been automobiles?
@tinamarie1974 Aw! Now you’ve made me miss John & John.
@tinamarie1974 agreed
Anyone else avoid trains, motorcycles, and buses for transatlantic travel?
@shahnm Bicycles leave something to be desired as well.
Cruise ship when I want to relax, submarine when I want to be discrete.

TARDIS
Only transoceanic by plane, I prefer to drive anywhere else over the ridiculous gyrations forced by TSA and cattle car airlines nowadays.
@olperfesser Who doesn’t love security theatre?

We soldier on.

Road trip! For us it is less about the destination and more about the journey; we love the road less traveled.
How about no travel, ever!
Teletransporter
If you truly mean L O N G distance travel, then definitely interstellar rocket ship with warp drive!
(Of course, “long” is a very relative term…)
@phendrick There is no “warp drive.” Space must be folded.
Many machines on Ix.
@cadmore @phendrick I can never get the corners folded straight! I think it’s all those pesky strings…
@cadmore I thought folding was warping (except in poker).
@cadmore @ybmuG That comes from trying to iron out the corners on manifolds, instead of just regular sheets.
Define long distance…
Car
Somebody else drive…

Out of body!
No matter how far, I prefer first class.
RV There yet?

@mehcuda67 Sorry, fresh out of those, too
@mehcuda67 @ybmuG I’m pretty sure there’s still parts of at least one in storage some place with the NTSB…
@chienfou @mehcuda67 @ybmuG There is a group trying to raise money to restore a Concorde to operation for passenger flights.
@mehcuda67 @PooltoyWolf @ybmuG I’d fly that!
@mehcuda67 @PooltoyWolf @ybmuG
If @chienfou is piloting, I’m in.
Minivan and nothing else.
Boat
@CaptAmehrican Yes l want that for lots of trips. Although you’d need a trailer to get it to, say, Joshua Tree or Pike’s Peak summit.
@CaptAmehrican @Kidsandliz Not necessarily, there are options depending on whether you want to get there quickly or comfortably.

Train. Clickety-clack, Salt Lake City at 6 in the morning and kids come out and wave at you when you roll past their house.

@jerk_nugget Happy Birthday today?
@phendrick thanks!
Can’t believe @pooltoywolf hasn’t chimed in for trains yet!

OWLS! TOWELS! JOWLS! AWESOME!

So no votes for the Titanic?
@tinamarie1974
@therealjrn @tinamarie1974 Service would be pretty poor now, since they only have a skeleton crew.
