Pour one out for Nitro Pepsi
10Officially discontinued at the end of last month, I’m down to the last four cans in my personal stash and I’m going to miss it so much
It was the only soda I’ve ever drank that I didn’t have to shake first to remove the excess ‘bite’ of carbonation that burns my mouth and nose. Nitro Pepsi was, for me anyway, the perfect level of fizz with a creamy texture that made it the only soft drink I kept coming back to. I’m sure PepsiCo made money on it, but not enough to please the shareholders and higher-ups, I suppose. Maybe Coca-Cola will introduce Coke Nitro soon…I can at least dream!

Never got around to trying it. I am still mad about Coca-Cola BlāK being discontinued.
@yakkoTDI That’s one I never got to try!
@yakkoTDI me too it was great! I loved the little coke shaped bottles too.

I can’t stand any cola
Dr Pepper all the way
@Star2236 Just for that comment, we’ll make you an honorary Texan. Just forgive our politics. Dr Pepper is the nectar of the gods.
@Star2236 Not sure I understand. Dr. Pepper is a cola, soda, pop, soft drink, whatever regional variant you choose to describe the same kind of fizzy drink.
@PooltoyWolf @Star2236
Not a Cola, though - totally different taste. I don’t drink any sodas as a rule, I like flavored seltzer waters, but I really want to try the Coconut Dr. Pepper that came and went last year before I could find it. Supposedly it’s going to be around longer this time …
@Kyeh @Star2236 Is there a definition of ‘cola’ that I’m not aware of? Down here, everyone uses the term interchangeably with all of the above listed terms.
@PooltoyWolf @Star2236 Well, the rest of us think of it as a particular flavor - this site has a good description, even though they misuse apostrophes: https://strangelove.com.au/blogs/journal/what-gives-cola-its-distinct-flavour
Dr. Pepper doesn’t have the spicy citrus thing going on, it’s fruitier or something.
Maybe @ironcheftoni can describe Dr. Pepper more accurately!
@Kyeh @PooltoyWolf @Star2236 Cola is a type of flavour of soda or pop.
Pepsi Cola, Coca Cola, RC Cola, Jones cola and many other brands.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cola
@Kyeh @Star2236 @yakkoTDI Worth noting that Jones refers to itself as Soda, not Cola.
@PooltoyWolf @Star2236 @yakkoTDI Yeah, because they make all those other bizarro flavors too!
@Kyeh @PooltoyWolf @Star2236 The company is Jones Soda but they do make a cola flavour.

@PooltoyWolf @Star2236 @yakkoTDI I once tried a cola flavored La Croix Sparkling Water. It was gross.
Guaraná Antarctica has always been my favorite. Unfortunately each can goes straight to my can.
@aetris I LOVE Guarana, but I’ve only had it once, in Brazil!
@Kyeh - Wegmans has it for $12 the 12-pack around here, which is nothing to these big spenders!
@ironcheftoni @Kyeh @PooltoyWolf
Dr Pepper is in its own class of pop bc it’s not a cola, not fruit flavored (like sprite, squirt, ect) it’s combined of 23 flavors. The internet describes it as sweet, peppery, and complex, with hints of vanilla, citrus, and nuttiness. I taste the caramel in it. Other people describe it as bbq cola, cherry without the cherry taste, marzipan. It’s very hard to describe bc of all the flavors. But it’s definitely not cola.
@Kyeh @PooltoyWolf @Star2236 it’s hard to describe Dr Pepper. Star, i think said it best. Although some people think it tastes like prune juice but spokespeople say that’s not one of the 23 flavors
@aetris I would happily pay that if I could find it here!
@ironcheftoni @PooltoyWolf @Star2236 Yes, that’s a good description - I know I like it.
@ironcheftoni @Kyeh @Star2236 Of all the things I’ve tasted in Dr. Pepper, prune juice is definitely not one of them! Hahaha
One can only hope for Coke Nitro.
Also sweeten Coke with cane sugar with fewer calories. Sweeten Diet Coke with Splenda or Monk fruit and get rid of aspartame, which is a neurotransmitter that give people neurological symptoms.
Bring Inca Cola to America in cane sugared and Splenda version.
@sylvandoc
Well, I’ve never tried it, and I’m not a cola person so I don’t miss it, …
but
I like the idea of a “less carbonated” carbonation.
Except that it’s obviously not “carbonated” if there’s no carbon [dioxide] in it. So I guess it would be nitrogenated instead? (not to be confused with “nitrated” or anything else sounding remotely unhealthy)
Wiki — despite being extremely sparse — agrees with the term “nitrogenating” and (more importantly) says that there is a nondescriptly-named “widget” in the can that helps to nitrogenate the thing. On top of that, this nitrogenating widget was invented in the late 1950s‽
And why has no other soft drink tried this until 2022? (or have they but I’ve never heard of it?)((While trying to find pictures of a Nitro can next to a “regular” size can, I was reminded of nitro coffee, which is a thing. And some energy drinks and cocktail mixes. I still haven’t yet found any “regular” soft drinks doing it.))
Umm… I was going somewhere with all of this…
Oh, I was curious about how the “widget” works, and I stumbled upon this helpful video almost by accident:
I know there are at-home carbonating machines, including standard fountain drink dispensers. I was wondering if maybe a nitrogenating fountain drink might also be practical … and it is (though I don’t know if it’s in the “at-home” price range). Some bars/pubs/&c. are already using them for certain beers. (here I’m using the term “beer” in the broadest possible sense; don’t shoot me)
Bonus facts (from Reddit 13 years ago) —
And while I’m at it, I’ve got to share one of the wonderful articles I found on the glorious interwebs.
I’m pretty sure I lost approximately 37 IQ points trying to read “Does Nitro Pepsi Have Caffeine?” (obviously AI-written) which literally makes all of these claims:
And there we have it. Nitro Pepsi might or might not have caffeine in it, and it might be less or even insanely more than regular Pepsi.
Now I want someone to go leave a comment on that page asking if Nitro Pepsi has caffeine in it. (or any of the other dozens/hundreds of articles written by “Deb” on the same day…)
@xobzoo I just asked Siri, and it says Nitro has 160mg of caffeine!!!
@xobzoo And this is why the world hates AI.
For the record, the actual can states that Nitro Pepsi DOES in fact contain caffeine, though the exact amount eludes me. It’s more than halfway up the ingredients list, so it’s not a trivial amount.
@haydesigner @xobzoo Can says 77 mg:
@xobzoo Fun fact: you may have noticed that Nitro Pepsi comes in a 16-ounce sized can, but the contents are listed as only 13.65 ounces. The remaining amount is taken up by the widget!
@haydesigner @Kyeh @xobzoo Thank you lmao!
@haydesigner @xobzoo @PooltoyWolf De nada.
How was the vanilla one, did you try that?
@haydesigner @Kyeh @xobzoo I did have many of both! I think the regular was slightly better but both were good.
I liked it the couple times I had it, but it was EXPENSIVE!
/showme the bittersweet end of Pepsi Nitro
@haydesigner When I was purchasing it from Walmart, it was scarcely more expensive per can than other 16-ounce sized cans.
@PooltoyWolf it goes for like $2-2.50 per can!
@haydesigner Right, not all that much more expensive than other same size cans. (Arizona Tea doesn’t play fair!)
Hey, @mediocrebot, can you zoom in on all those other colors of Pepsi cans?
That one on the bottom right looks like a cross between Pepsi and Pomegranate 7 Up. Or maybe it’s a Pepsi Code Red.
@PooltoyWolf, you can buy a 12-pack for $5 on sale. That’s under 50¢ a can.
You seem to want to compare it to energy drinks? That’s not what sodas are.
@haydesigner Or perhaps it’s just not expensive to me at all for what I’m getting, considering it’s one of the few drinks I actually grew to really love. (I sure know it’s not an energy drink)
Soda would have to approach $5 a can before I personally consider it ‘expensive’. I’m not batting an eye at $2 and change per can. YMMV.
EDIT: What were you referring to with your original price of 50 cents per can? I’m a bit confused.
I see a 12-pack at Ocoee Walmart Supercenter, not sure if it’s the same thing you’re looking for.
I really missed Mountain Dew Live Wire (orange) when they discontinued it so I know how you feel!
