They have scary mouths because they are basically defenseless. Their defense IS “make a scary face.” So when you see one doing that it’s desperately hoping you’ll leave it alone.

They will eat small birds right out of the nest, they will eat lizards, frogs, small snakes, baby squirrels, and anything else they can get their teeth into before it runs away. Anyone who has poultry on a farm can tell you that possums will even try to kill and eat a chicken. Or a duck. Geese can usually drive them away. Their primary diet may be carrion, as is fairly obvious from their dentition, but if there’s a shortage of carrion, they will make some. By killing something. Turkeys, well, turkeys aren’t sure what to do with the possum, but they would eat it if they could.
