I’m not picky about the quality of the coffee grounds and I’d drink pod stuff if I was at a workplace that had it, but if I want a single cup at home I just put a smaller amount into my regular drip coffee maker.
@tweezak The “good” Nespresso pods are actually pretty good. There is the unconfirmed conspiracy story that there is no way they could get good “crema” without adding something artificial to the Nespresso pods to make it froth up. It’s true that the good machines will brew at 15-20 bar which, along with a good grind, should do it. But still there was (is?) suspicion about how it can do that.
EDIT and on today’s topic, yes, no way you will get “crema” out of a K-cup machine, but it wasn’t designed for it and the pressure and grinds are different.
@pmarin My little pod machine came with a milk frother that is downright amazing. It will heat the milk or can do a cold froth. I’ve heard it is great for making hot chocolate too. Best things about it are that it is almost totally silent and can be completely submerged for cleaning. Far beyond expectations.
I use those little adapter inserts in my old Keurig, rather than use the normal pods. Much much cheaper, less waste and you can put whatever brand grind you want into them.
@scilynt just be careful to align the hole (depending on your model)… “hm this isn’t shutting properly, i should jam it” may or may not have broken the basket in a keurig in the kitchen of… a friend (also they sell basket replacements, the friend found out)
I go for the cups, because I like silly stuff like Vanilla Cinnamon Latte cups and stuff like that. Also have hot cocoas and teas for it. A real treat is when you can find the Hostess Ho-Ho flavored ones, though.
@olperfesser used to do that when I worked at an office that had unlimited brewed coffee (not terrible, but not that great either). You needed something to suck on through yet another mostly-pointless 1-hour meeting so would always fill up your cup on the way to the meeting room.
Decided I was drinking too much caffeine and switched to decaf, but years later realized the problem was the meetings, not the caffeine.
@olperfesser@xobzoo replying to this now because I have no idea what is going on, but I am now “goat” and noticed I have a new icon! For a brief fleeting moment at least. I see you have Emeritus status by your dead goat icon (not dead, just pining for the Fjords). So I guess that’s in my future. I didn’t really notice those icons were special until this morning when I got the goat.
I used to have it occasionally at my office, including with the you-fill-'em pods, but even then it was too weak for me. Also, the amount of plastic waste seems huge. I never drink it if I have a choice of another type.
Tried all sorts of coffee techniques but will limit this to the “pod” discussion as I tend to ramble (too much caffeine?)
K-cups. Like many things I started on the dark path by finding a machine and pods on clearance. At first decided there was no way it could ever make “good” coffee. Learned:
The pods do make a difference. Find a good brand you like. Look at the actual weight (oz/grams) per cup — can vary quite a bit. Obviously you want more! (More coffee )
If you like stronger flavor, use the smallest size (amount of water) possible. I had one K-cup machine that refused to run with less than about 8oz. I usually wanted 5-6oz and sometimes it would just stall waiting for more water. (They have different pump and heating systems).
Recycling: some brands do say they are recyclable, by removing the filter bag containing the grounds, leaving you with a plastic cup that is recyclable in some areas.
Going to be TL;DR so will post my Nespresso thoughts in a later post…After some more coffee.
EDIT forgot to add: one trick was to do an empty run first through the machine (no pod). This pre-heated more of the path for your hopefully-better coffee on the second run. Bonus is you get some warm water in your cup to pre-heat it, then dump the water and do the real pod.
Pods are more economical for me bc I don’t drink a lot of coffee but when I do I tend to drink good quality and although I have a grinder it’s just one less machine I have to pull out and use. I buy the blue mountain Jamaican coffee bc it’s low acidic (and I know it’s really blue mountain, not some fake crap too). I can finally drink coffee and not have tons of bladder and heartburn problems, it’s great.
Wegmans organic dark roast is decent. Disappointed when they moved away from the recyclable pods (paper filter with coffee would peel away from the cup which could then go in the bin).
As I mentioned before I only got into K-cups because I found a machine and some packs of pods on clearance. Don’t regret it (gotta try new stuff in life) but wouldn’t do it again. Found a way to get semi-decent coffee with good pods and knowing how to manage the machine.
Now in retirement, hoping to get back to “real” espresso machines, of which I have a few, most in a state of disrepair. (admittedly K- machines are not intended to be espresso machines).
For travel in an RV, I do find the Nespresso mini with original capsules (not the Vertuo thing) can be pretty good with quality Nespresso pods. It’s a small machine (much smaller than the smallest K- machine). Easy to plug in and use quickly. I found a few other brands (Peets and Starbucks) sometimes available from Amazon Warehouse Deals at good prices. Stay away from anything in the plastic pods. Near-expiration dates really don’t matter that much on these (purists like my brother-in-law roast green beans every few days and grind to order each cup – but that’s a bit extreme and not practical all the time).
Some is good and some is bad just like any other pod product.
Pod coffee is coffee. I will never drink it or any other version of coffee. Ever.
@kjady When someone offers me coffee I usually say, “No thanks, I already had some 30 years ago.”
I don’t like hot coffee. I drink mine cold. Brew a pot at a time and put the container in the fridge.
It’s mediocre at best.
Don’t drink Coffee, only hot cocoa & only in the Colder months!
I’m not picky about the quality of the coffee grounds and I’d drink pod stuff if I was at a workplace that had it, but if I want a single cup at home I just put a smaller amount into my regular drip coffee maker.
Too much sludge in k-cup coffee.
I do have a Nespresso machine which I like but that’s a different animal.

/showme pod people making pod coffee
@mediocrebot Hmm, that looks like bean people making bean coffee.
@heartny @mediocrebot They are making bean soup. Of course this appears to be one of the cannibal tribes of beans.
@heartny @mediocrebot @yakkoTDI That image seems to be the stuff of the nightmares you get if you try to sleep after drinking too much caffeine.
EDIT: guess it’s time to get some coffee. It’s 5AM somewhere. Using Nespresso type at the moment.
@heartny @mediocrebot @yakkoTDI A soy vanilla latte is technically 3 bean soup.
@algae1221 @heartny @mediocrebot @yakkoTDI
“3 bean soup”
Why, so it is!!!
Nope. Not drinking random microplastics.
@Salanth Agreed. But I think we’re pretty certain about the origin of our ingested microplastics, so, not entirely random.

@catthegreat the ones I have are similar to these… They fit perfectly in place of the standard pods so no worries about aligning or anything.

@eblade Eeew, but OK. We respect all faiths here.
My wife and I go through a 12 cup pot of coffee every day, in 2 cups each. We couldn’t afford pods.
@olperfesser used to do that when I worked at an office that had unlimited brewed coffee (not terrible, but not that great either). You needed something to suck on through yet another mostly-pointless 1-hour meeting so would always fill up your cup on the way to the meeting room.

@olperfesser @pmarin
That is true of so many things, not just caffeine.

“Pod coffee”?
Is that the pluperfect tense corresponding to past tense “peed coffee”?

My sister and her husband have had this machine for a few years. It’s been reliable, and is still making 5 cups a week for them.
Wegmans organic dark roast is decent. Disappointed when they moved away from the recyclable pods (paper filter with coffee would peel away from the cup which could then go in the bin).
The only time we drink a pod coffee is if a hotel has it in the room.
Otherwise, all pod coffee is crap.

I like making coffee out of pods of endangered dolphins.
@OnionSoup How do you get the tuna smell out of it?
@werehatrack why would you want to?
