Places to stay on the way to New York NY from Charlotte NC
2I’m looking for recommendations of places to stay overnight between Norfolk VA and Cape May NJ… for the GF, her little dog, and me.
The gf, her little dog (15lb Malti-Poo/Shitzhu) and I are visiting daughter unit #1 in Charlotte NC before grand baby #1 pops out in mid-August. (This will be my first grand child… Strange that I don’t feel older, but whatever…)
We will leave Charlotte NC on July 5 and need to be back in NYC late on July 8. I’m planning to head to Norfolk VA, and then up route 13 to Lewes, DE for the ferry to Cape May, NJ and then home to NYC.
I’m thinking to stay one night a bit north of Norfolk VA, and next night in Cape May NJ or a bit north of that.
Anyone have recommendations for places to stay along this route? We’re on vacation so I’m not looking to be very cheap, but the $3450/night AirB’n’B I found outside of Cape May is way too spendy. $200-$250/night is more what I’m thinking, maybe a B&B or small hotel, etc.
So, any suggestions?
Thanks.

Congrats, Grandpa/Grandma!
You’ll feel older when you hear those words! lol Have a safe, fun trip!!
@Tadlem43 Thanks!
As I get older, I’ve come to realize that I don’t feel as old as I apparently look. I’m sure it will catch up with me (hell, it already does some days, especially in the morning…) but for now, unless I do stupid things that I know will hurt, I’m usually feeling pretty good most of the time.
Hi! I very much enjoyed The Bedford Inn at Cape May, NJ. Very quaint, Victorian style accommodations. The owners and staff were friendly and sociable:

I love Cape May, it’s a very relaxing beach to visit compared to much of NJ. I recommend taking advantage of the various historical sites to visit while you’re there. A lot of history!
@nayten Thanks, but unfortunately they are totally booked until late July. I clearly started planning that way too late.
From their website tho, this place looks wonderful… exactly the kind of place I love. Thank you!
@baqui63 Oh no! I hope you find something there regardless. It’s really a lovely town to visit.
Charlotte is fun! Check out the NoDa area. Some good food and brews up there.
@LJeAYsy4LoqxEC I have always had a decent to good time in Charlotte. Will likely be a bit more sedate now that the daughter unit is becoming a mommy and I’ll be on grandpa duty (whatever the frak that means) but eh. life goes on…
Why would you come back to NYC? My advice is to just pick one of the places you visit and stay there. Any place would be fine, really, aside from maybe Camden (but you shouldn’t be visiting there anyway).
@Shotgun, well… I grew up in NYC (Flushing Queens, NOT Manhattan) and can afford to live here (thanks to having dead parents who invested well in real estate and a good job and driving an old car) but I understand your point.
Were it not for my gf’s extreme dislike of the cold, we’d probably head up to VT or NH when I retire… however, I can also see heading south to NC or maybe SC (I haz much family betwixt Greenville and Spartanburg and spent a lot of Summers there as a young’un, tho NC strikes me as a bit more Yankee friendly, especially in the Charlotte area).
And I pretty much agree re: NJ… tho my daughter moved to Hackensack and it is pretty nice… at least as good as the Billy Joel song makes it out to be.
@baqui63 @shotgun
SC not very Yankee friendly. My parents are originally from Chicago, and find Asheville, NC fairly tolerable.
YMMV
@baqui63 Seems like your route is intending to cross the Chesapeake Bridge at Virginia Beach, then traverse the Eastern Shore of VA and MD, right? I used to live in Virginia Beach and commute to Boston (!) frequently, so I know this route by heart.
There isn’t a whole lot between the northern end of the bridge and Maryland. Cape Charles is at the southern tip, and the Bay Haven Inn is nice, but I think it’s pricey. I stayed there years ago and have always meant to go back. But, alas…
Your next decent chance is Pokomoke City, but then you are nearly to the Lewes ferry, so…
If I were to do it I might find a nice B&B in Norfolk or Virginia Beach, then make the run up the Eastern Shore the next day. A bit of a longer run, but you will find virtually zero traffic on 13 northbound.
Post pictures!
@TrophyHusband Ding ding ding!
I got a decent sounding hotel a bit north of Exmore (~6.5 hours from Charlotte) for one night, then two nights in Rio Grand NJ… leaving me with about ~4 hours’ drive home the last day (frakking annoying that the gf has to be back for work on Friday late morning, but such is life in a family business).
I’m easy to entertain… a nice walk along a beach or old houses or kitschy shops or a museum is all I need, with a good meal and decent booze (as long as I’m not driving) but the girlfriend is more easily bored, so we’ll see what happen. I know I’ll be happy, and I’m hoping she enjoys it, but I guess we’ll know in about two week’s time.
Thank you!
