@ACraigL That IS surprising since it’s almost always the same winners every time there’s a photoshop contest. Primarily because only a few people here have real skills with it. The rest of us are winging what we can. I did mine playing with Paint 3D which obviously is way more limited in its functionality. Which is fine, because I have very little clue how to use Photoshop and it wouldn’t have made any difference. What I’d like to learn is how to truly put an image into and behind the scene. How do you get existing elements to overlay what you’re inserting?

@cinoclav download GIMP - open source photoshop alternative. tons of free tutorials out there for it as well. i used to it create this pic of a chicken in discarded underwear found on a hiking trail. why i created the picture is another story.

@carl669 I’m familiar with Gimp, I’m just not good with it. Same for the online Pixlr. Hoping to learn the basic steps without having to teach myself everything there is to know about Photoshop/Gimp/etc.

@carl669 @cinoclav I also mostly use GIMP. I find I learn some new capability or technique each time I use it. I’m probably sill not using it “correctly” or in the most efficient way.

@medz Did you use Gimp for the gif?

@cinoclav For still images, I use photoshop. The most important thing for putting things in the background is layers. Source image on the bottom, new faces/items on the top. Then you use eraser (or a mask, which is more complicated) to remove what you don’t want from your new face. Gotta make sure you are working with the correct layer though. Zooming in really helps make sure you can get really close when erasing. Blur tool helps blend edges so they are more natural/less jagged. Then for finishing, I use clone stamp tool to copy some of the background around items that stick out on the original, past the content of the new item (like an original characters ears, popping out of the new persons head).

@cinoclav yes. The process seems more tedious than it needs to be. Each frame is a layer and I had to manually move/adjust Glen to the spot he needed to be in for each frame. Lucky for me, the original gif didn’t have many frames and about half of them didn’t even feature Glen. I’m sure there are better ways and definitely better tools for animation.

@medz @lichme Thanks guys! I’ll have to break down and really start teaching myself. I used to know how to use PS a bit but it’s been so long that I’ve completely forgotten the steps.
