Rare to find electronics these days that don't actually take 110V-240V AC (because making and distributing multiple versions is expensive and annoying).
@cengland0 I suppose. There are 220V 50Hz countries..... From the looks of the manual they hardwire the power standard (some electronics can switch between 60 and 50Hz systems)
@JonJon Ah Yessss... I presume you mean the Powered Partner / Studio Partner/ Rock Partner line which I thought of too :-) I re-foamed the Partner 850's I had been using on the computer at the office and sent them of to College with my oldest to use as a dorm room system for his laptop/phone. 20+ years old and still sound great!
I didn't skip the built-ins because they're hard. I skipped them because everyone is moving away from wires and putting them on deep discount isn't fooling anyone. Sell us a wired mouse while you're at it.
@mehmongrel Wired speakers are always better than wireless speakers, except in terms of ease of installation (but they still need power so there will still be a wire anyway). The sound quality of wire will always beat the sound quality of Bluetooth. And if you can put speakers in your ceiling it's not that much extra bother to run wire down to a jack behind your audio receiver to get the best quality possible.
@PhotoJim Recently I had to convince my girlfriend that wired speakers are simply going to sound better than wireless. She wanted less mess and fuss, but hey, audio quality is much more important to me. There will always be wired speakers.
@thekenya they look alright.... i wouldn't expect much but if you're using them in a rec room or some random location where prime sound quality isn't a concern i'd give 'em a shot....
I'm really tempted to buy these for my wife's new office. They don't seem like they're very good, but neither is her office. I'll check back after lunch, mehbe then I'll get a set. I like having time to think about my impulse buys.
// Jeez, y'all. We knew you'd have to do a little extra work to use those built-in speakers we sold the other day - well, "sold" is maybe too strong a word. A little sawing and patching and painting never killed anybody, right? We figured a few of you were handy enough to deploy a few tools to achieve that pimped-out in-wall speaker effect. In a way, we were beyond right: it turned out to be very few of you.
So for the 99.84% of you who didn't bite ... //
Realizing that's just copy writing ... but in our defense, not exactly a product with a huge potential customer base. Would guess left-handed underwater basket-weaving goggles would be similar. Products involving minor but permanent construction typically involve more attention to quality than bargain pricing. At least, for those of us with real friends who visit and such.
Again, realizing it was just pithy copy writing ...
@MehnofLaMehncha I loved the "pithy copy writing" I found it very funny and very "meh" but I have to agree a little. I have purchased hundreds of items from meh and I have installed several in wall and in ceiling speakers before. I was not afraid of the work I just wasn't not confident enough of the speakers themselves to cut holes in my wall. I have absolute confidence in the meh customer service department to do everything in their power to make customers happy but patching the hole if the speakers didn't work might be a bit much even for them.
@narfcake I was very temped by the ones meh was selling I just wasn't sure enough. FYI I have 12 in-wall speakers from Monoprice installed in my house and I am very happy with them. I would still test out your goodwill purchased speakers before you cut the holes.
@narfcake I need getting up to at least half speed in terms of knowledge re speakers receivers surround watts frequency yada yada. Where can a hick like me go for some education?
Has anyone set up bluetooth speakers in a surround sound style? Can each channel be sent to a specific speaker? I'd love to eliminate the wires to the rear channel speakers.
@AGentleman Is it even possible with what you have may be the better question. Does your receiver have a line level output for the rear channels, or is it speaker level only? If the latter, then it's unlikely you can do this.
Don't forget that some Bluetooth implementations have a delay, which would really mess up the surround sound experience.
@narfcake ...that additional adapter increasing latency even farther. Seems a system-integrated solution engineered to address wireless latency would be the only logical solution.
@narfcake All bluetooth implementations have a delay.
Bluetooth transmits audio in packets and will retry when a packet is lost. The first component of delay is that the transmitter can't transmit until it has a complete packet.
The second component is allowing for missed or corrupted packets. If the receiver doesn't get a complete healthy packet in a timely way, it asks the transmitter to try again.
The receiver will delay the audio, so that it has time to handle an error and try again without introducing a glitch in the sound.
If there are a few glitches, it may decide to lengthen glitches until there is enough delay for two or more retry cycles. A session might start out syncronized and then get out of sync from the error induced delay.
@Redoak While you can plug another Bluetooth transmitter into the lineout jack for the other surround sound channels, those channels won't be synchronized with the others.
I have not yet measured the delay for Bluetooth, nor tried using multiple bluetooth streams simultaniously, to see how much the timing differed; I just assume it will sound really annoying.
There are two NPR radio stations near our house. Sometimes I will choose one, and my wife will choose the other. They tend to have different delays when broadcasting the same program. If the delay is enough, it sounds like a distant echo with both radios playing, this is mildly annoying. If they are close enough to synchronized, it sounds fine. In between, it is really annoying. These days, I automatically check what station she is listening to, and set the second radio to match.
Sorry about the spelling issue. Typing on my phone, and something has disabled spell check.
Thank you for all the input. Or should that be output since these are speakers? I was mainly thinking of using these with my computer. @narfcake@RedOak@hamjudo@KDemo
@Kyser_Soze Count me among those who think the design is terrible. It's about as unaesthetically pleasing as I could imagine at this price point, barring the use use of some primary color or pastel.
Next week I'm gonna be gone for 3 days. I really really hope in those 3 days i'm not missing out on a fuku. I missed the last one and it was the only time I missed going on the website for 6 months in a row.
And then there's the assumption that we own a house and can do whatever we like to it...I didn't buy the other speakers because I rent an apartment. Though to be fair, I'm not buying these speakers, either.
Fuku = _ I'm new here. Don't know the lingo yet. Have learned the site honors EST zone; their clock resets at 9 p.m. PST. Fuku stands for/ means, what?
@mzsamwood Occasionally, Meh puts a Fukubukuro up for sale. The word roughly translates from Japanese to English as Lucky Bag. It's always $5, you never know what will be sent, but it generally includes a bag with the Meh logo on it. And they sell out like lightening. Seriously. The last one went in less than a minute.
Got um. Going to put them above the Jacuzzi for better sound from the TV outside... Should fit well between the 2x6's I have running above on the patio cover.. NICE MEH just what I needed more fkn speakers
@bugger since they appear not to be outside or moisture rated, protect them well. From the manual:
To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, this apparatus should not be exposed to rain or moisture and objects filled with liquids, such as vases, should not be placed on this apparatus.
@RedOak Seriously was thinking about getting these for my hubby's man cave. Read: the storage closet off our apartment's patio AKA the only place he is allowed to smoke.
Just not sure it'd be wise to have these semi-exposed to the elements on a long-term basis.
@ciabelle as long as they're protected from direct, sustained moisture (& no ocean-salty air) they'd probably be OK - just not as durable as speakers designed for it.
His smoke might be as damaging to them. I read Apple won't even work on a laptop/desktop that is smoke-infested! Due to health concerns for their employees. Do you really want to make his smoking habit more comfortable (sustained)? ;-)
Would also want the outlets to be ground-fault protected.
@RedOak Believe me, if I could get him to kick the habit, I'd be ecstatic! I am not too terribly concerned about the reduced lifespan caused by smoking to a $28 pair of speakers, but rather the reduced lifespan it will give to him.
I believe the outdoor patio outlets (which are outdoor rated but don't have the test/reset buttons) are tied to the GFCI outlet in the bathroom. We live in an apartment, so we're pretty much stuck with what we have though.
I'm still on the fence, but leaning a little toward making the purchase. Thanks for your input!
@RedOak They are connected to a GFCI plug and it is fully covered. Just moisture from the air. I figure they will last 5 years or so.. Good enough for me
@radi0j0hn There is compression. The quality does vary, depending on the quality of the build and the codec used by the manufacturer. Usually, you get what you pay for. Still, audiophiles don't like bluetooth, even though they've come a long way, it doesn't sound as good as wired speakers. But people like it for the convenience.
@radi0j0hn There's going to be lossy compression involved. A number of codecs can be streamed over BT, but both the transmitter and receiver have to support them. The only mandated codec is SBC.
Is 30W going to produce quality sound? I'm thinking about getting either a soundbar or speakers for the television. Would these be good for the main television?
btw, the link in the write up is to the 'other' built in speakers (a.k.a. indestructible headphones). send me a few pairs of those ceilings mount speakers gratis and i'll make you some free Meh. video footage of just how easy it is to install these, even if you're drunk.
What you'll need is one BT audio receiver, a 2-way splitter cord, then two 2-way BT audio transmitters. Each of the four pairs would connect to each of the split streams.
I was a little worried reading some of the reviews right after I hit the buy button. They were delivered yesterday, and I kinda like them. They aren't the best bookshelf speakers I've heard, but for the price I paid I'm pretty happy with them.
I bought these for my wife. We stuck them above some cabinets in the kitchen. She uses the BT to stream from her phone while she's messing around in there, like making me sandwiches and stuff. They sound great! So far the BT piece has been reliable.

fuk yo speakers!
Yay! More speaker items! (Not)
How can people need quite this much audio equipment? I mean, I guess it sells...
You don't tell me what to do.
I would mount it if I bought it.

If you buy it, you can mount it. Indeed.

What ....is this National Speaker Week??
enough with the speakers and earphones already!
Power: 220V 50Hz? Is that right? If it is, I'm out. Looked like good speakers though.
@cengland0 Oopsie.... Maybe Meh is investing in fuse manufacturers...
@cengland0 Yeah if that's true, these won't really work well/at all in NA.
Shame, looked decent, I could use some new desktop speakers (not that I use them).
@Nexar @JonJon reading the manual, it must be a typo. Here's a snapshot from the manual.

@cengland0 You can also see 120v in the picture of the back of the speaker.
@cengland0 Philips' site says 220V/50Hz, but that's on usa.philips.com and Amazon reviews mention buying it at Wal-Mart, so...

@mehmongrel Yes, wireless speakers are better, as long as you don't care about how they sound.
I also use a wired mouse. It's not going across the room, and I don't have to worry about batteries.
I like how the aux is is hardwired.
I want to get them but everyone is making it sound like I'd be buying a piece of shit

I don't need speakers, but I stopped down to say that I hit 2^8 Meh clicks in a row.
@TRD STACK OVERFLOW
I didn't not buy the wall speakers because they looked hard to install, I didn't buy them because they looked like crappy speakers.

@AGentleman perhaps my info is old but haven't heard of a receiver that has Bluetooth "outputs" dedicated to the rear channels.
And just as important, as @narfcake says, latency can already be an issue in surround sound systems even without adding in Bluetooth into the chain.
@RedOak Proprietary, I've seen, but not BT. A transmitter could be used if it's line level, though.
@narfcake ...that additional adapter increasing latency even farther. Seems a system-integrated solution engineered to address wireless latency would be the only logical solution.
@RedOak Some are better than others.

@hamjudo - Sounds like you have a harmonious life ;-)
@narfcake Sorry, didn't follow the aptX until now. I didn't realize that low latency Bluetooth was a real thing.
Thank you for all the input. Or should that be output since these are speakers? I was mainly thinking of using these with my computer.
@narfcake @RedOak @hamjudo @KDemo
@hamjudo No worries!
@AGentleman Line level then, so a BT transmitter can be directly plugged into the rear channel output.
I foresee a lot of wall speakers (some assembly required) in the near fuku future...
@lsuredbeard Nah if there are a lot of them leftover they will be on morningstar...
Anybody else think the tweeter sticking out of the top makes them look stupid?
@Kyser_Soze I do, but I'm still one of tje sorry suckers who bought one.
@Kyser_Soze yep. But those are actually webcams connected back to the Party offices in China.
@Kyser_Soze Trying to evoke Bowers & Wilkins, perhaps?

Was speakers .com taken? Is that why you call yourself meh.com? Seriously, enough with the music listening devices. We only have two ears.
So uh, the link in there redirects to the headphones yesterday, not the built-in speakers of Monday.
Are these subsidized by Twitter?
I'd buy them except that the last speakers I bought on here for the same price were absolute garbage.
I've never been an audiophile. Is there a difference in frequency response between wired and BT connections? Is there any added compression, etc.?
@radi0j0hn Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It's dependent on what a manufacturer wants to implement for the chipset/amplifier.
BT typically adds a little delay vs. direct wiring.
@radi0j0hn Audiophiles don't consider 3" drivers "woofers".
@craigthom unless you're BOSE. ;(
@radi0j0hn Audiophiles don't buy Bose speakers.
I take it these still need a wire for power? No built in battery?
@kubi No battery. You can see the power cord in the pics.
I wanted to grab the in-ceiling speakers, but I rent, so...
Horrible specs are horrible.
Is 30W going to produce quality sound? I'm thinking about getting either a soundbar or speakers for the television. Would these be good for the main television?
@wickhameh 20w. Still, it's probably better than the TV's speakers, as many are made with the premise that "it makes sound".
btw, the link in the write up is to the 'other' built in speakers (a.k.a. indestructible headphones). send me a few pairs of those ceilings mount speakers gratis and i'll make you some free Meh. video footage of just how easy it is to install these, even if you're drunk.
Why are you such dicks? Got your balls in a twist?
Is it the Bluetooth or the ease of installation or built-in amps or the more recognized brand or simply the lower price?
It's 3pm Eastern and already almost 900 of these have been sold vs the paltry 150 total in-wall speakers sold Monday.
@RedOak All of the above?
Do these sync up? As in, if I buy four, will they all sync to one bluetooth device? I'm a bluetooth newb.
@Satchmo Nope. One-to-one.
What you'll need is one BT audio receiver, a 2-way splitter cord, then two 2-way BT audio transmitters. Each of the four pairs would connect to each of the split streams.
@narfcake Wait 1-1? So I can't even pair the two that are already here to one receiver?
@Satchmo One as in one pair, which is how these are sold and hooked up.
Cant buy, something went terribly wrong every time, guess no sale for me!
Would these be good for a desktop computer? I have a need.
I'm not quite sure so I'm asking. I know you guys are selling one item per day, but does that mean that I'm expected to buy one item a day?
@metairie70001 You should, most of us do! Buy three if you can!
Second question, can you go back and purchase an item that was sold a few days ago?
@metairie70001 You won't have to if you use the "buy three a day & be happy" rule.
@metairie70001 Have you seen the FAQ page yet? Frequently Asked Questions: https://meh.com/forum/topics/faq
@metairie70001 Might check http://morningsave.com sometimes if they have a lot they will stick them over there but the price is usually higher.
Just received today. Love them! Love them! Love them! My co-workers want to order a set.
I was a little worried reading some of the reviews right after I hit the buy button. They were delivered yesterday, and I kinda like them. They aren't the best bookshelf speakers I've heard, but for the price I paid I'm pretty happy with them.
