Perpetual Jelly Beans
13We bought jelly beans from Sam’s and my youngest son could not stay out of them. We almost ran out after what seems like a short amount of time because he could not keep his hands out of them.
The wife and I picked up another container of jelly beans, but we did not tell him. I have been adding more jelly beans to the old container as those in the old container get eaten.
This artificial scarcity has caused them to last a lot longer than they would have if we had just replaced the jelly bean container.
Oddly enough it seems to have worked with the wife as well and she knows about the trick…

Nice. I like this approach.
And your son has not noticed the never ending supply of JB’s?
@tinamarie1974
Not yet. At least he has not said anything to me.
I think he inherited my memory and mine is little better than that of a gold fish in some cases…
@jst1ofknd @tinamarie1974 But gold fish live 20 years and are smarter than many fish.
@jst1ofknd @Kidsandliz @tinamarie1974 Goldfish get a bad rap.
@Fuzzalini @jst1ofknd @tinamarie1974 Not only that but gold fish are really social and interact with the world outside the aquarium. They appear to be very curious. The cats loved the goldfish - definitely interactive cat TV.

I read somewhere that goldfish actually have a memory of three months, but the stereotype better fit my needs than the facts.

@Fuzzalini @jst1ofknd @tinamarie1974 I take it you are now fishing for fishy facts? (grin)
@Fuzzalini @jst1ofknd @Kidsandliz @tinamarie1974
I like that… I may have to borrow it
@Fuzzalini @jst1ofknd @Kidsandliz @tinamarie1974
While goldfish may have a good memory, they are not by any means intelligent…
Unlike most tropical fish, goldfish will, if given the opportunity, eat themselves to death.
If it is offered to them, goldfish will keep on eating flake fish food until one or more internal organs rupture.
@ELJAY I didn’t know that about them. You’d think that would eventually lead to the extinction of their species in the wild.
@Kidsandliz “In the wild”, goldfish have to forage for, or catch their own food, and be “fit” enough to avoid being caught & eaten by other fish. That ain’t usually the case in a fishbowl.
@ELJAY They also die when put in tanks not big enough. I was amazed how big they get. Someone had dumped a ton of goldfish in a man made lake near where I grew up. Those things were huge!
That’s brilliant.

We got some more jelly beans because of the wife, but it is really frustrating to see him with his hands in the jar every time you turn around.
We tried to tell him to limit it, but we got tired of the begging. We tried hiding them, but then it ended up him searching and/or begging. Since we’ve done this, there has been no frustration and no irritating begging.
We just happened to get another jar just the right time when the previous one wasn’t all the way empty and I can just add enough to make it look like it is stil scarce.
@jst1ofknd …how old is he? I think you may have hit on an important ‘parenting hack’ there!
@chienfou
He’s 12 and at this point I am really questioning his memory and/or attention to detail.
@jst1ofknd
I think it’s just an ‘unconscious’ thing that would be evident if he was thinking about it but since he isn’t it just ‘slips by’
My 12 yr old was pretty clueless lots of times, but ended being a very detail oriented person… time will tell
Adults haven’t learned this lesson with toilet paper on the shelf. But my kids may be on to something, as they never replace a roll when it runs out… Me, my major concern is that they put it the right way on the holder when they do learn to replace it. I don’t know why it matters to me at all, but it just does. Over the top!
@PlutoIsAPlanet
@PlutoIsAPlanet because the only people who do it from the bottom have walked in on one unrolled all over the floor. Or are savages.
So he finally said something today. He said he felt like there were more jelly beans. Neither the wife nor I replied to that. Let him wonder.
@jst1ofknd haha that is great
@jst1ofknd maybe let the level go down a little bit?
@RiotDemon
I think I let the level go down too far and added too much…
